Noted communication theorist/celebrated academic Marshall McLuhan's most well-known observation, "The medium is the message," is one of the first things any media studies undergraduate student learns about. For some reason, a lot of them miss out on the finer details of what McLuhan is trying to convey and the irony is lost on many. Misinterpretation is an easy stick to beat people with, but if we talk about just one aspect of what McLuhan's means by "the medium is the message," let's just say that we usually focus on the obvious message, instead of the structure that was slowly put [...]

Jaw dropping with oozing, crystal-disco-build and amazingly gracious in content, New York City’s David Sisko & David Greenberg have given intelligent care and consideration to their thirteen year old concept which sounds like it has been started in the bosom of vintage creativity and re-adapted continually to tease our souls with maximum, gleaming joy. A non boisterous selection of nineteen tracks on this mixtape/LP of sorts, gives us an indication of how solid and technically serious Disco Pusher truly is. To give full credit to a sound which really does display the ultimate in fresh and creative techniques, [...]

It’s January and it’s not cold. I know, right? I might make it out of my first ever winter without seeing a snowflake, when they’ve had snow three times just four hours away from me. Strange. Plus, the Caps are still mired in mediocrity. At least Ovechkin is scoring a few goals now though…look how happy Semin is when they win a game nowadays. Anyway, I’m here to deliver yet another twelve pack of MP3 goodies that have been dropped off in the past bit by PR companies/bands/well wishers that we haven’t had time to pick through or [...]

Never short of talented musicians, Philadelphia strikes again with the afro-electronica-indie sounds of Zakee , a relatively new artist who is vibrantly coloring the playing field. After a brief stint as a high school math teacher, Zakee found himself delving into the world of performing and producing music. With over fourteen years of classical training in both piano and violin, the career change seemed obvious, but only in hindsight. Yesterday, he released a scintillating video for the song "Snakes", off his latest album, Assimilations , which dropped last year. Click here to view the [...]

In another life, Zakee Kuduro was a calculus teacher at West Philadelphia High School who dabbled in music and production in his spare time. At the time, his path wasn't entirely clear: "It was too hard for me to put out my obscure sound in Philly," he recalls. "I felt like I wasn’t hip-hop enough, I wasn’t electronic dance enough, and I wasn’t neo-soul or whatever. I found myself in this weird little category." That category being a musician who wanted to work in all of those styles - and more. Call it the product of 14 years spent studying [...]

A former high school calculus teacher from West Philly, Zakee Kuduro didn't get into writing and producing hip-hop until his last year of college. He wrote his first full-length album, Assimilations , on an extended stay in Brazil after falling in love with the country while on a tour of South America supporting Erykah Badu and Seun Kuti. His music shows more promise in its multifaceted production — layers of thumping bass, afrobeat samples, and an overall vibe of metallic tension — than on any particular song. (more...)

“I’m looking for something that’ll…break through. You know?” James Woods’ Max Renn yearns in David Cronenberg’s 1983 cult classic Videodrome . Oh, how things have changed. In today’s day and age, we’ve already drowned in media. It’s swallowed us. We’re nothing but a bubble amidst one infinite, engulfing abyss. Intimidated? You should be. With each passing second, you’re losing opportunities to take advantage of a culture that’s moving ahead and at an exhausting rate. You could very well be alone…left behind…abandoned. Terrified yet? Yes? Well, that’s more like it. -Michael Roffman President/Editor-in-Chief

I’ve kind of gotten to the point here at Sirens where I can’t write something substantial and deserving of every piece of music that comes my way. This is not because I receive an ungodly amount of submissions (though there are plenty), it’s more because of other commitments like work, school, being a husband and raising a child. With that said, I feel bad to skip and hop through music looking for easily recognizable diamonds and possibly overlooking others that I should have wrote more about. So I’m going to compromise in the only way I can think [...]
