May is here! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping... and new shows are on the calendar. Here are a few shows to see if you have a chance. Most are under 20 bucks, and if I had unlimited gas money and got paid to be a music blogger, I'd go to all of these. But I'm not, so I won't. Unless you are buying my ticket? Never heard of these bands with strange names? Listen. Like. Trust me. Black Lips (pictured above) 5/1 @ The El [...]
Filed under: Video , Exclusive Malaysian artist Zee Avi is a long way from being a lawyer, which she, admittedly, was bred to be. Discovered by White Stripes and Shins manager Ian Malone, Avi -- who grew up listening to the Beatles , Bob Marley , Janis Joplin and Simon and Garfunkel , among others -- was signed to Jack Johnson 's Brushfire Records, and will release her self-titled debut May 19. The effort is preceded by the first single, 'Bitter Heart,' [...]

I was just randomly surfing and then ended up on the KCRW at SXSW 2009 page . They had the selection of mp3s and one of those mp3's was Bitter Heart by Zee Avi. Based in Malaysia, the Borneo-born Zee Avi is instantly likeable with her very Blues/Jazzy voice. She first caught the attention of youtubers with the very sweet original track 'No Christmas For Me' last Christmas. It then caught the attention of Brushfire Records in the US, and she [...]

Born in Borneo and now based in Kuala Lumpur, 23-year old Zee Avi is the first female artist signed to Brushfire Records /Monotone. She was discovered by Raconteurs drummer Patrick Keeler, who liked a video she posted of herself on YouTube enough to send it to his manager Ian Montone (White Stripes, Raconteurs, The Shins, Vampire Weekend). As Zee puts it, next thing she knew, she was on a plane to LA to record her engaging debut record, due out in May. She's small in stature, but her voice is a [...]

Christmas music, y'all!! Some classics, some re-workings, and two of my favorites from Sufjan Stevens. Andy Williams - "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" Nat King Cole - "The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You)" Dean Martin - "Baby, It's Cold Outside" Gene Autry - "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)" Frank Sinatra - "Jingle Bells" Brenda Lee - "Rockin' Around [...]

Christmas is coming and kids are having fun (so said the chorus of my fifth grade play " Shaping Up Santa ," for which I still know all the words and thankfully no longer have to wear the green elf costume). I have a love/hate relationship with this time of year because of the overabundance of really bad, synthy, jingly, repetitive Christmas music that bombards me at every pass. But tonight I was listening to my friend Dainon 's superb radio show out of Salt Lake City and he filled two and a half [...]
My family is big on the Christmas season - choosing a tree, cookie decorating, first sledding tracks, etc. Vermont makes the cheer pretty contagious, with blankets of snow and a multitude of Rockwellian scenes. The frustrating part for me has been locating the perfect soundtrack. I've purchased an embarrassing number of really bad holiday compact discs. Each time I purchase a new one I hold out that it will have classic tunes, a jolly spirit, and perhaps some interesting newbies. Sadly they seem to be rife with absolutely annoying tracks (Wham, Kenny G, Chipmunks). This [...]
