Wilkosz + Way Under normal circumstances, it'd be logical to consider the record that followed a band's breakthrough album through the lens of how those successes might have affected their creative process and output. You can't quite do that in the case of Woodpigeon's newest record Die Stadt Muzikanten , however, because even though its predecessor Treasury Library Canada was the album that brought the Calgary outfit national recognition via the Polaris Prize long list, Muzikanten was already completed and [...]

Frank Yang Something of a cold snap hit Toronto yesterday, so I was fortunate to have an invite to what was promised to be a hot and sweaty dance party at the Smiling Buddha bar, soundtracked by Woodhands showcasing their just-released second album Remorsecapade . Granted, it'd have probably been just as warm if I'd just stayed home, but experience has taught me that the odds of dance parties breaking out in my living room tend to be close to nil. I think there's a temptation to not [...]

Zeus - Marching Through Your Head Directed by Adam Makarenko Co-directed by Alan Poon Marching Through Your Head seamlessly integrates live action performance with stop-motion animation and features meticulously detailed miniature sets. The video documents the journey of the band's boots up to the peak of the mythical Mount Olympus in search of the Greek God of the sky, Zeus only to find that Zeus the God is actually Zeus the band. Filed under: Video , New Music , Exclusive The genesis of Zeus occurred while band members Mike O'Brien and Carlin Nicholson were backing up singer-songwriter Jason Collett on the road. Even though they were just hired guns, they had some pretty big shoes to fill considering Collett's "other" band is Broken Social Scene . While Zeus have got a ways to go before becoming rock legends themselves, somebody better tell that to director Adam Makarenko. Integrating live action performance with stop-motion animation, Makarenko's video [...]
Acts like Jason Collett , Zeus , and Bahamas share more than just musical talent; they're all from Toronto, ON. And in celebrating their status as children of the Queen City, they're planning an incredible tour that isn't your standard musical affair. More than just sharing a common stage, they'll be sharing songs as well. So, while you can see each act alone on the stage doing their own thing, expect covers, cameos, and other musical combinations on stage. The tour kicks off March 10th in their shared hometown and winds [...]

Some notables: Folk singer/songwriter Jose Gonzalez kicks off the album with a cover of Minogue's "Hand on Your Heart", Mates of State tackle Tom Waits' "Long Way Home", and James Mercer (The Shins fame) and brother [...]

Frank Yang Is there any better/lazier way to start of the new year's concert calendar than with the band that closed out the old year's sched? I think not. And so The Balconies , who were one of the last bands I saw in 2009 are the first I've seen in 2010, thanks to last night's show at Supermarket. And seeing as how I was sort of running out of things to say about the trio that time, it being third time I'd seen them in less than [...]

Filed under: Canada , New Releases If you're a fan of Arts & Crafts mainstay Jason Collett , chances are you've seen Toronto musicians Mike O'Brien and Carlin Nicholson in action. As members of the Dark Horse, backing band for the Broken Social Scene guitarist- turned-indie-troubadour, the pair has clocked some serious stage time since taking up Collett's cause in 2005. Come February, O'Brien and Nicholson will get to enjoy a little limelight of their own with the release of 'Say Us,' the debut [...]
