While investigating a current US band of the same name, I stumbled across Zillionaire . This London act comprised a rolling cast of mainly Kiwis , and enjoyed a brief spurt of popularity and good reviews in the mid-2000s before calling it a day (or at least ceasing live performances) in early 2007. It seems a shame: their mournful, swooning rock is blissful on the ear, the oral equivalent of watching waves crash into a deserted cove under a watercolour sky. SOIWT knows about as much about club soul as it does Finnish achilles specialists: a little more every day, but really, the square root of sod all divided by bugger nothing. Nevertheless, such rock-focused ignorance hasn't stopped your feckless blogger from stumbling on the latest belter from London MC and producer Donaeo . In 2004, Heath Dupras stepped from behind the drums of The Washdown (Lookout! Records) to front his own band with ex-Phgoh drummer Keith Ulrey. The two built Tampa, FL's Zillionaire around songs Dupras had written himself during his post-Washdown downtime. I don't usually hear too much out of Tampa that I have been enjoying lately, but Zillionaire is a well-noted exception to the rule. They play classic indie rock with strong influences from Versus, Polvo, and Bedhead. Their debut album, "The Street Lights Have Been Turned Down" will be released on January 15, 2008!
