Oops, gone a bit longer between pots than I'd meant to. There's also an ominous looking submission pile that needs attention. While I attempt to do something about that, how would you like to hear some songs interspersed with me talking nonsense? Last week I got together with my pal Allan to record a wee podcast for Insularis Records , the results of which you can hear below. Insularis Podcast [...]

MORE LISTS! Yes, list season continues, as I fight with borderline obsessive compulsive disorder and an overwhelming need to rank things using a system that makes no real sense and changes every ten or fifteen minutes. Two disclaimers best just means my favourite, you are allowed to disagree without either of us being wrong. I've not heard every blooming album released this year. Onward then, to the first batch of my twenty favourite albums of the year. You can find a bunch of other albums I liked that didn't quite [...]

This is all kinds of awesome. Borderline offensive? Hmm. Judge for yourself, but it's witty and its cheesy and it's all the kinds of things I love about ZvG. Okay, it could have done with a giant KimZilla or something but regardless, this tale of martial arts, derring-do and rank cowardice in Old Glasgow is [...]
Bonus song today? Go on then, why not. My bandcrush on Zoey Van Goey is firmly out of the closet by now, and shows no sign of dropping off any time soon. They released a new single just a couple of weeks ago, which you can hear and find out a bit more about here . In Scotland It Never Snowed But In Canada It Did isn't actually anything to do with Christmas, but since it has been snowing - what, you hadn't noticed? - I'm going to squeeze it in anyway. Hey, [...]

Hurrah, a new Zoey Van Goey single! You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate was one of my favourite songs from the second Zoey Van Goey album, and now you can buy it, in digital single form! How exciting. The b-side is a quite tremendous remix by GRNR, under the name of You Told The Crunk I Knew Karate. That remix was the highlight of the recent remix EP ZVG released, and the live remixing - and dance moves! - at the launch gig made me grin like an idiot, which is always something of a recommendation. [...]

Please note that this is called the Remmcast, rather than the Ariyemcast, for little better reason than that it sounds better. R.E.M. split up this week, which is sort of like the death of an elderly relative: you know it's sad, and you mourn the loss, but they hadn't been themselves for a while, everyone knew it was probably coming, and maybe it's for the best after all. Due to not really wanting to pontificate too much, I haven't really produced what could be in any way described as a 'career retrospective' or anything, nor have [...]

Apologies for the late appearance of this post, but erm, gin interfered with my ability to function like a normal member of society yesterday so umm... well, you'll just have to forgive me I suppose. Rest assured it hurt me more than it hurt you. Anyway, it's sort of a busy week this week, although it takes its own sweet time to get going. Mondy, blah, Tuesday, booring, Wednesday, nah nothing much, Thursday: MAYHEM! Well sort of. For me there will the the Wide Days launch at the Teviot during the day, and the Electric Circus [...]

Just catching up with The Drake . Stay tuned for another edition later this week. -ed. February may be the shortest and weather-challenged month of the year, but 20112s version has already been both long on and warm to quality releases. I'm not even sure what that means, but it somehow still feels apt in introducing the latest offerings from PJ Harvey , Telekinesis , Drive-By Truckers , Twilight Singers , Bright Eyes , Lifeguards , A Hawk and a Hacksaw , Asobi Seksu , Sonic [...]

This week's Best New Releases include some big time albums, including the newest LP from one of our favorite bands, Bright Eyes. After having listened to The People's Key a number of times, not only is it Bright Eyes in true form, The People's Key may be their best album of all. You can click on [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Earlier this week, Zoey Van Goey released Propeller Versus Wings , a perfectly charming record of boy-girl pop sure to find favor with fans of Belle & Sebastian, Allo Darlin and Magnetic Fields. Formed in Glasgow in 2006, the band's self-released debut, 2009's The Cage Was Unlocked , found the unlikely ears of Lou Reed (who featured them on his radio show) and lead to the band signing with venerable Chemikal Underground in 2010. Before we go any further, I gotta give [...]
