Zola Jesus "I Can't Stand" I always wish there were more songs conveying true empathy. There's a lot, but it's never as much as we need. I guess that's the case for most anything having to do with empathy, right? "I Can't Stand" is addressed to a lonely and despondent friend. The tone is grim yet slightly uplifting, and Zola Jesus' words and phrasing acknowledge the great difficulties of finding love and staving off depression and self-loathing , but offers hope and unconditional support. The darky, gothy feeling of the piece anchors the sentiment to a [...]

ZOLA JESUS - TRUST ME Don't believe the lack of hype in magazines - Nika Roza Danilova is probably the coolest person on earth right now. When not doing work with Xiu Xiu and This Song is a mess but so am I to make Former Ghosts, she's making some of the most haunting industrial music ever put to tape. She posted this last night and Pitchfork picked up on it, hosting it on their site [ download from pitchfork ] [...]

Excuse the label promo "watermark" at the beginning, the song actually plays in full after that. Stereogum premiered the new School Of Seven Bells LP yesterday where you can grab the song for free. The band has taken a more upfront direction for these tracks, the tempo is more driving and its catchier more than ever. Imagine Stereolab at its best dropped into a finely widdled down dream pop song with big rock elements, definitely lovely. Weed Diamond is a Colorado band that is keeping Garage Rock [...]
Today, a venerable volcano of lo-fi indie pop/rock has been erupting from the New York scene (see Vivian Girls, Cymbals Eat Guitars, etc.). Sleigh Bells have taken elements of this scene and infused a grandiose sense of noise and rock so succinctly that it feels effortless in the face of so many down-tempo acts who rigorously attempt to provide their own uniqueness in a sea of similar bands.

Were you to imagine a pagan sacrifice in which PJ Harvey gagged Jefferson Airplane and strangled Florence, all with her languid locks in the midst of a steaming swamp, you'd be about half way between disposing of your sanity and Zola Jesus . Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona Nika Roza Danilova's haunting wails have drawn somewhat conceited comparisons to the likes of Crystal Castles and the aforementioned Welch. Far less erratic than Gianfranco and without even the acutest of hairy upper lip wisps, Zola Jesus is a bone-chilling vixen as aurally enticing as a siren shot by Stanley Kubrick. Far [...]

( screencap ) Zola Jesus - Run Me Out (mp3) (buy CD/vinyl / mp3 ) Zola Jesus ( myspace ) is a woman named Nika Roza Danilova who howls out the deep dark Wisconsin weird. Trained as an opera singer before even hitting puberty, she sometimes lifts her voice into an tropospheric wail, more often lets it settle into a broad, hovering moan. Past releases have featured fault-crack tracks that buried her vocals under noise and reverb; the aura was undeniable but the message unclear. [...]

Zola Jesus' new EP is epic. Stridulum is a significant addition to a catalog that was previously lacking a stand out release. She had a prolific streak of putting out record after record over the past year, none of which stood out (at least to me) as a great album. Stridulum, her latest release for [...]

With her latest release, an EP titled Stridulum , Pitchfork dubbed the elusive 21-year-old Nika Roza Danilova aka Zola Jesus a "noise-goth queen." Not sure if that is a good title or not but what I am sure of is that her bone-chilling operatic voice is one of the most unique I've heard in the past few years. I had the pleasure of seeing the queen of noise-goth juxtaposed in stark daylight during SXSW, one of the week's strongest performances. After the show I briefly chatted with Zola Jesus (who [...]

vids and photos by kate maxwell Merrill Garbus aka Tune-Yards played an inspired set on Friday night with her parents in attendance at Bowery Ballroom. Sharing the bill were Twin Sister , Zola Jesus, and headliner Xiu Xiu, but Tune-Yards clearly stole the show. Bassist Nate Brenner is the perfect compliment to Garbus' voice which bellowed and soared throughout what just may be the top music set I've caught thus far in 2010. Check out more some video and pics from the evening courtesy of QC photag Kate Maxwell, after the [...]
Zombelle by Daiana Feuer The night promised a triple serving of spicy sweet women. The dark feminine kind. A 49% chance of leotard**. Our sure leotard bet, Tearist's Yasmine Kittles, was detained in NY and couldn't make it—announced a burly, balding nerd man at Echo Curio's neighboring liquor store, with a sense of authority and restrained lust. [...]

What a star-studded Friday night. On an evening of about six good concerts, this one at Bowery Ballroom is the place to be. First of all, Twin Sister's 80s pop tinged music is making a huge splash right now, so this is the time to go see them. tUnE-YaRds was on the tip of everyone's tongue at the end of 2009, and any opportunity to check out her weirdo sort of folk tunes should absolutely be taken. Zola Jesus is not my thing, but she fits in well with the rest of the bill. If you're a fan of the [...]
Back in cold cold February when everyone in New York had resorted to wearing those puffy sleeping bag coats, a friend and I trekked out to a studio set in Brooklyn to try to be in the Zola Jesus video for "Night," her first single off the incredible Stridulum EP. We were supposed to be in a club scene that called for "high fashion robo-lesbians from the 80s," but the shoot was running late and had to wrap without ever filming my gray stripper heels. This is an unofficial video set to the title track off [...]

The day began with an interview Impose was filming with Harmony Korine . It was at an awesome Mexican restaurant . When I got about a 15-minute notice to photograph it, I pretty much jumped out of my bed at the opportunity of seeing Harmony in person and eating an amazing burrito at the same time. Here he is holding a piñata just purchased from the store across the street: Zola Jesus was the interviewer. Keep an [...]
