photo by Morgen Schuler Hey Marseilles opened the day up on the main stage with a great set of Seattle's favorites. Their vast instrumentation and soaring melodies drew a large crowd for a show so early in the day. As always, their songs sounded fantastic. photo by Morgen Schuler photo by Morgen Schuler photo by Morgen Schuler photo by Morgen Schuler [...]
What a day today was, in the previous years Sundays have always been a little lackluster. It makes you wonder if it's done on purpose where the day starts off slow but picks up a quite a bit... Read the rest on Speakerboxxx.com

A few weeks -- er, months (time, where you at?!) -- back, I heard a song called "New France" by Orbital, an electronic duo out of Sevenoaks, England. At that particular moment, I had no idea who they were, but soon came to discover the duo of Phil and Paul Hartnoll has been making music since 1989. What drew me to the song, outside of its great production and pacing, was its rather incoherent vocal hook, courtesy of Zola Jesus. The only real discernible word seemed to be "lion" -- which I, honestly, only picked up on after watching the [...]

Zola Jesus at Guggenheim ( more by Amanda Hatfield ) Just like Cold Cave ( who are playing Northside ), Zola Jesus is going from the Guggenheim back to something more conventional this summer. She and A$AP Rocky are the latest batch of artists added to the Catalpa Festival which is happening on Randall's Island on July 28th and 29th . Tickets are still available. In other news, [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Pop Culture , Music Appreciation Getty | Getty Today, May 22, is World Goth Day . Besides meaning that you probably shouldn't go outside after dark tonight, it also means there's going to be lots of music played -- and listened to -- by people who wear capes and roll around in graveyards for exercise. (What? Exercise is important!) Here at Spinner we were curious: a [...]

photos by Amanda Hatfield Clocking in just under an hour, Zola Jesus reimagined some of her catalog for a special event at the Guggenheim last night (5/10) as part of the Divine Ricochet series (that also hosted Grouper/Julianna Barwick and Cold Cave ). The show saw Nika Danilova, complete with light up puffy collar, revisiting her work backed by the Mivos Quartet and JG Thirlwell [...]

My recollection of M83 's sold-out performance at the Sound Academy this past Sunday is somewhat of a hazy blur, thanks in part to a wisdom teeth operation I underwent the day after. Admittedly, I can't remember much of what happened yesterday (other than drinking half of a chocloate milkshake from McDonald's) however, I couldn't possibly forget the euphoric rush that surged through my body as Anthony Gonzalez and co. dove into the sublime opener "Intro". Although Zola Jesus was not present to deliver her howling vocals, Morgan Kibby (whom also has a fantastic solo project [...]
Yes I realize that technically we're a week late on this mix, but we wanted to do the yearly Sasquatch! Music Festival edition mix early. In years past we've released these closer to the... Read the rest on Speakerboxxx.com

"What's that Shawn? You haven't finished talking about SXSW?" No I haven't Mr. Made-Up-Person, I have not. It's called "being super busy with stuff." Now that those things are done, I can wrap this shit up and move on to other stuff. What do you say? Wanna read about a festival that happened two months ago? Yes? Okay one person, I shall! If there's one thing we could have used at last year's Sweetlife Festival , it was more music. Looks like the folks at Sweetgreen have heeded our call and added a brand new Treehouse Stage for the festival's second go-around. The Treehouse's line-up is stacked from start to finish. Make sure to get there by 12:55pm to catch the amazing Haim sisters, who wow'ed us at least three times over at SXSW. It's going to be hard to decide between here and the main stage throughout the rest of the day with artists like Twin Shadow, Delta Spirit, Zola [...]
All day today, we're playing celebrating Robert Smith's (April 21) by playing your favorite songs by The Cure and other goth favorites. As a genre and a style, "goth" is pretty easy to stereotype (see The Damned's "Grimly Fiendish" for a particularly campy version), but the truth is its influence spreads far and wide. Goth is a thread that connects industrial bands like Einstürzende Neubauten to romantic new wavers like Gene Loves Jezebel (though you'd never find their fans in the same room!) through all manner of dark if not mopey music. Gathered here you'll find indisputable Goth pioneers like [...]
