When former Lungfish front man Daniel Higgs joined Swedish noise-rock juggernaut The Skull Defekts on their Peer Amid album earlier this year, it seemed like a natural fit that played to the strengths of both parties. Now, taking things one step further, The Skull Defekts teamed up with Zomes, the solo moniker of former Lungfish guitarist Asa Osbourne, for a day-long recording session in Rhode Island. The results are right here on 2013-3012 and they are as excellent as you can imagine. The union of The Skull Defekts and Zomes resurrects the pile-driving drone [...]

Dustin Wong - one mind Zomes - OK Philosophy I see life as very hard; I believe one should have a very simple, very crude and very strong moral system…. This is why there can't be any direct violence in my films. Already in The 400 Blows, Antoine is a child who never rebels openly. His moral system is more subtle than that. Like me, Antoine is against violence because it signifies confrontation. Violence is replaced by escape, not escape from what is essential, but escape in order [...]
Could a man raised in a dangerous cult, with a history of insurgency towards these United States, become the leader of this very same country? Could a man with no name, no document of his birth, who spent his formative years spreading the doctrines of his clannish faith among those who've shown themselves hostile to [...]

Fans of the Baltimore post-hardcore quartet Lungfish have always held the band's enigmatic frontman, Daniel Higgs, in high reverence. And for good reason: It's hard to read the lyrics to any given Lungfish song and not come away with the impression that Higgs has seen sights, heard sounds, and contemplated thoughts the rest of us foolish mortals couldn't even begin to comprehend—much less put to music in a way that somehow resonates with an audience. (To be fair, however, I'm certainly not going to judge anyone who raises an eyebrow at lines such as "My daughter keeps a [...]

Zomes — Youth of the Beast Zomes ' Earth Grid is a slippery one. I could toss it under the tried and true "drone" umbrella (applicable for half of all Thrill Jockey releases), but that would miss the mark. Meditative and almost off-puttingly spare, it lays synth lines and drum beats over a carefully plotted framework of repetition. True to its name (as well as that geometric artwork), it's also very mathematical in the way that it twists [...]

Another great Lungfish related release rolls its way into 2011. Ex-Lungfish guitarist Asa Osborne returns to his geometrically inspired project Zomes and this time he burrows deeper into the droned murk of the lower analog jungle. From the opening chords of, well, "Openings" the record hums like a warm transistor, pulsing with meditative, repetitive synth patterns and dust caked drum loops. Earth Grid feels like a record that can hardly be split into parts, rather it's two sides of disconnection from the grid via Osborne's trance-like burial of his listeners in layer upon layer of square-wave foam. [...]

Here's some rather soothing, laid back, atmospheric music for you. It comes courtesy of Zomes and it's taken from the band's album 'Earth Grid', which is out in April. Download the track here: 'Opening'

With some heavy hitters in Toronto's indie outfit The Rural Alberta Advantage performing downstairs at First Unitarian Church and Baltimore's Zomes (solo project of former Lungfish guitarist Asa Osborne) playing in its Side Chapel, tonight will be business as usual for R5 Productions. Right in their element opening for Rural Alberta Advantage, Conversations With Enemies is a band that's energetic as they are eclectic, whether their dressed as Rocky Horror and doing the Time Warp, channeling gypsy love tunes involving grave robbery and zombies, or releasing an album with its own graphic novel. Opening for Zomes [...]
