TORCHES – “When You Gonna?”

TORCHES – “When You Gonna?” L.A. group TORCHES' latest single "When You Gonna?" is a nice easy going tune that they were kind enough to put up for a free download.  It can be found on their upcoming EP If the People Stare which is set to drop May 6th.  Follow the Soundcloud link below to get your free download.

[VIDEO] Cub Scouts – “Pool!”

[VIDEO] Cub Scouts – “Pool!” I couldn't stop grinning the entire time I was watching the video for "Pool!," the latest from the Australian group Cub Scouts .  Maybe it was the because of the great one-piece swimsuits, the awkwardness of the background dancers, or the band actually doing their own synchronized routine - either way, it sure looked like the the band was having a great time making the video.

[Interview] Scanners

[Interview] Scanners During SXSW we had a chance to sit down with Dim Mak representatives Scanners,  who have recently put out their newest EP "Mexico," which was released right before they hit Austin.  Their third time at the mega industry fest, we discussed electronic influences, working with Steve Aoki and staying DIY. MTIB: How has the rise of electro affected the way you guys are making music? SCANNERS: We feel as if we're making the same sound we always have but still trying to push the limits.  We each have individual writing styles that all kind of [...]

Listen Before You Die: Cloud Cult – Feel Good Ghosts

Listen Before You Die: Cloud Cult – Feel Good Ghosts Often times you get the feeling that albums are written about a particular relationship that the songwriter endured. Sometimes the lamenting continues across several albums. In 2002, lead singer of Cloud Cult , Craig Minowa, lost his infant son - much more emotionally taxing than a relationship that went south. Not surprisingly, any song Cloud Cult has released since 2002 has been influenced by the event. Yet, what is so compelling about Cloud Cult is Craig Minowa's ability to take a situation that might normally translate into something dark and/or depressed and turn them into songs about the beauty [...]

Intrigued Vinyl: Emitt Rhodes – Emitt Rhodes

Intrigued Vinyl: Emitt Rhodes – Emitt Rhodes If you've ever wanted to listen to Paul McCartney without all of the Paul McCartney, you should listen to Emitt Rhodes . Rhodes will open your world and take you to a piece of the 602s and 702s that was smothered by mainstream music. I was blown away when I first heard this record. This is some sophisticated pop music. It has meaning, but you aren't asked to sift through complexities to get to it. This simplicity makes the listening really pleasant. Some songs are happy, some are sad, but Rhodes keeps them all on a balanced [...]

Savages – “She Will”

Savages – “She Will” Savages' "She Will" can be found on their forthcoming album Silence Yourself.  The first single off the album is an upbeat, almost psychedelic, track that could easily find itself in a horror movie.  Although the vocals may seem a bit "screamy" at times, the track gets my heart racing and reals me in.  Take a listen below.

[ALBUM] Matt Costa – Matt Costa

[ALBUM] Matt Costa – Matt Costa Brushfire Records never seems to disappoint.  Their lineup of artists is out of this world awesome and Matt Costa is just one member of their lengthy and robust roster of talent.  His newest release just emboldens the catalog of records he has already put out in the past decade. Matt teased us in late 2012 with the release of his Sacred Hills EP  that eventually made my Favorite EPs of 2012 list.  But like I said, at only four songs long, it was only a tease and left me searching for more [...]

[SHOW REVIEW] City Pages Presents G. Love & Special Sauce with John Fullbright

[SHOW REVIEW] City Pages Presents G. Love & Special Sauce with John Fullbright First of all, if you don't know who John Fullbright is, go out and introduce yourself to his music.  His three piece band may look unalarming but the crew really puts on one hell of a show.  The Oklahoma native is just one album young ( From the Ground Up)  but his twangy rock sound already has me thinking he's going to be something special. On a side note, I just wanted to mention the quality of openers that I have seen at G. Love & Special Sauce shows over the years.  It's turned into an [...]

New Music Tuesday: The Strokes – Comedown Machine

New Music Tuesday: The Strokes – Comedown Machine Not sure about you, but this was one of my most highly anticipated albums for this year (among a number of others on the way in the near future).  Julian Casablancas and  The Strokes  are making their first return since 20112s  Angles  and while it's not their best work ever,  Comedown Machine doesn't disappoint. The opening track "Tap Out" really sets the tone for the album with some sweet intertwined guitar and bass riffs reminiscent of "Machu Picchu," which was actually the opening track, and my favorite, from  Angles . The album rolls right along featuring the albums first official [...]

The N’ere Dowells – “I Won’t”

The N’ere Dowells – “I Won’t” The N'ere Dowells are no stranger to the site.  In the past we've featured "Comets" and "Anabel" which can be found on their upcoming album, Are You Still Down , redone and better than ever.  With that said, the garage rockers are back for a third go around, officially designating them as artists who clearly make music that is not bad.  Word on the street is that this album will be bigger and better than anything they have ever put together.  After  hearing the first single, it's tough for me to argue with this speculation.  Check [...]

[ALBUM REVIEW] Cloud Cult – Love

[ALBUM REVIEW] Cloud Cult – Love In 2010, it was believed Feel Good Ghosts would be the last album we'd ever hear from the Cloud Cult . I'm not sure how much truth their was to that rumor, but with the band's ninth studio album, we are reminded once again how sad that reality would have been. Love , as with any Cloud Cult album, is immense in emotion and full of extravagant arrangements - a product of Craig Minowa and his fellow seven band members. The Duluth-based group is among an elite group of bands with eight or [...]

[ALBUM REVIEW] Low – The Invisible Way

[ALBUM REVIEW] Low – The Invisible Way Most bands that have been around for 20 years have started reissuing albums, but Low , continues to push themselves beyond their comfort zone as is apparent with their latest release, The Invisible Way . The Minnesota group has continually to expand on their minimalistic style, this time with the help of Wilco frontman, Jeff Tweedy . Despite Tweedy's style being heavily cemented in Americana, The Invisible Way  doesn't stray too far from the punk, pop and art-rock flavors commonly found on a Low record. Instead, we hear more a unique, more crisp production [...]

[PLAYLIST] Beach Party

Instead of a typical Monday Morning Mix-up I'm throwing a spring break party mix your way.  If you aren't on a beach drinking with boat loads of gorgeous women, this playlist probably isn't for you.  But, if you are fortunate enough to find yourself in that situation, press play and proceed to party.  You'll be hearing the likes of Chiddy Bang, Hoodie Allen, Slightly Stoopid, and some remixes of Foster the People, Passion Pit, Outasight, and more.  Cheers.

Local Artist of the Week: Botzy

Local Artist of the Week: Botzy Botzy (Adam Botsford), better known for his work with ska group Culture Cry Wolf , drew my initial attention for his work on The Best Love is Free compilation album.  Since 2010, Deaf to the Static records has worked with various organizations and artists such as Botzy to put together an annual compilation album to be distributed for free - 'cause who doesn't like free music?  Their goal is simple, expose great music to new ears and bring artists closer together.  New in the past two [...]

Robot Music!!!

Robot Music!!! Why the photos of  Daft Punk ? Well it's because the electronic duo has just announced the release date to their new album  Random Access Memories which is set to debut on May 21st. Although they've done the  Tron  soundtrack and a few remix albums, we haven't gotten a studio album from the duo since 2005 making this very exciting. The album is available on iTunes for pre-sale now so get it here ! So until then let's enjoy some other electronic music. Today I have a wide variety of music. It's spans from  Pluto Dash [...]

[EVENT] Low at the Fitzgerald Theater

The wonderful people over at The Current are bringing us an evening with Low at the Fitzgerald Theater tonight at 8:00p.m. The event will celebrate the 20-year history of the band and the release of their new album,  The Invisible Way,  produced by Jeff Tweedy . The show is set to feature both the band’s greatest hits as well as tracks from the new album. Twist! -  Members of Trampled by Turtles will accompany Low on selected songs. It's going to be wild. As a piece of the The [...]

[PLAYLIST] It’s Friday

It's Friday, folks! And that means we should all be happy. Work, school, heck, even if your spring break is coming to a close, Friday is always a good day. So listen, sing, dance and have an absolutely brilliant Friday... or the terrorists win.

[VIDEO] The Cat Empire – Brighter Than Gold

[VIDEO] The Cat Empire – Brighter Than Gold The Cat Empire is a group that I have enjoyed listening to for years but have never had the chance to see them live.  This probably has to do to the fact that they're based out of Australia but whatever.  This tune will be on their fifth studio album which will be coming out this spring, their first full-length release in three years.
