An Argument for Live Music
Live music cannot be replaced. It lives, it breathes and sometimes it bleeds. It always has, and it always will. Ticket prices may be rising, free downloads may be abundant and people may be less inclined to leave their houses. But those who do are rewarded greatly. There is nothing quite like a stellar live performance. Audiences will remember it for years to come, and no YouTube video can replace that. Technological advances in sound and production have paved the way forward for music over the past few decades. Endlessly improving technology in recording, sound, production, [...]
Interview: Daughter
Judging by Elena's soulful and depressed lyrics, you'd expect her to be a sad, fragile english girl. However, upon chatting to her, I found her to be delightful! Slightly nervous, chatty and full of laughs, expect the unexpected not only from Elena, but from Daughter. Daughter are a three piece band formed by Elena, her boyfriend/guitarist Igor and drummer Remi. Their debut album If You Leave was released earlier after the huge success of EP The Wild Youth . Their songs are heartfelt, serene and dramatic, and here's what Elena [...]
Pond Drop New Mountain Rock Epic ‘Xanman’
Inter-dimensional psych rockers Pond have released the second track from their upcoming August release Hobo Rocket, and if it promises more of what we've heard so far it's going to be one for the ages. The driving riff and thunderous drums show the Perth fellas at their best. Give it a listen.
Gig Review: Collarbones Live at Vivid Festival 2013
The first time I saw Collarbones was last year at OutsideIn Festival at The Factory in Marrickville. A small but packed boutique hipster event, and my first electronic-focused festival. I had the time of my life. It mostly showcased semi-ambient electronica, or 'space sound' music as I like to call it. I had never heard of Collarbones until I saw them play, and they blew me away. It left a lasting impression on me, so I jumped at the chance to see their set at New Wave: Sound, two days of sonic exploration, part of Vivid Festival. It was a [...]

Interview: MS MR
We chatted to Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow from MS MR about their debut album Second Hand Rapture (SHR), David Letterman and Game of Thrones. Ever since their Tumblr facilitated release of EP Candy Bar Creep Show , the world has been buzzing with their "noir pop" vibes. MS MR formed out of college, and began with an email exchange between Lizzy, who owned Neon Gold records and Max, who was producing music. Max was looking for a singer and when Lizzy sent him some of her own demos, things kicked off. Since then they haven't [...]
Disclosure drop music video for ‘When A Fire Starts To Burn’
UK's garage/house little maestro's Disclosure , have dropped the film clip for this contagious gem of a track, 'When A Fire Starts To Burn'. This music video is directed by Bo Mirosseni, and features some preaching goodness by Eric Thomas who pumps us up with his mesage, 'When A Fire Starts To Burn!'. The clip features some mind washed church goers getting closer to God but we just think they're living a lie and wanting to get closerto UK garage. Only dropping their debut album Settle at the start of this week, it's been [...]
Introducing Bear’s Den
Here's an artist for the end of the week. Stemming from London UK, this three piece bearded outfit named Bear's Den are gaining massive momentum with their chilled out folky tunes. At this stage they've only dropped an EP named Agape (Greek for Love), but have already had support slots with Of Men And Monsters, Smoke Fairies, and Matt Corby, and concluded 2012 with a support slot for Mumford & Sons. Witnessing their talents as apart of the last weekend's Bushstock Festival in London, all I can say is they played to a packed out Bush [...]

Stream Jagwar Ma’s ‘Howlin’ One Week Before Its Official Release
Jagwar Ma's debut album Howlin is set for release next week, but NPR have provided a little treat for those fans that just can't wait. Check out the link below for a link to what I'm thinking will be one of the sonic delights of 2013. On first listen, this record's genre is very hard to place, and this can't be seen as anything but a good thing. Drawing from classic 80s sounds, Jagwar Ma incorporate modern dance beats to create some of the most energetic party music I've heard. Also, you have to check out their live [...]
Interview: Palma Violets
Giffo catches up for an interview with Chilli Jesson, bassist and vocalist for Palma Violets, the band single-handedly resurrecting UK guitar rock right now, ahead of their debut visit to Australia for Splendour in the Grass. Palma Violets have a fascinating story. The band met around a fire at Reading Festival, with Chilli originally offering to manage Sam (vocalist and gutarist) after hearing him play guitar. From there, a failed stint at band management - of which they unsuccessfully attempted to sign bands such as WU LYF - saw them start Palma Violets with Will (drummer) [...]
OBERHOFER shares second track off EP, ‘Together/Never’
God this Brad Oberhofer is good. The king of melodies, and subtly of releases, he is forever producing these gorgeous tunes. He explained that losing a friend to drugs, is a deeply saddening experience which inspired the feelings and themes explored within the new set of songs. Explaining further, "In the past few years, I've lost some friends to things like this. In those situations, there was nothing I could have said to help them. They couldn't have heard me if they'd tried." As you can see, the feelings and emotions driving these tracks are very raw, and [...]
Matt Corby: Sat, June 1 @ The Tivoli, Brisbane
Last night my esteemed friend and I, both donning a cute scarf and edgy jacket combo, went and saw Matt Corby’s sold-out performance at the Tivoli in Brisbane. Unsurprisingly, the ratio of girls to guys was probably 6:1, and most of the guys were boyfriends. But more on the fans later. I had briefly researched the opening act, Grace Roosevelt, before the show and thought she was a cute acoustic guitar singer song-writer. But she rocked out! She ended with a great cover of The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" that her YouTube recordings don’t do justice. [...]
An endless pit of discovery
Now for me its hard to stray from the pestle and mortar of guitars and drums. It's what I know. However, on my musical voyage through Europe I've started to explore; through friends, artists and scaling the web, an endless pit of discovery. This discovery featuring (and not limited to) a range of musical genres from dance, house (deep), nu disco to indietronica. Berlin had a massive impact on nurturing my fondness, and it snowballed in the depths of southern Austria at Snowbombing recently. This may or may not be reigniting a spark for my love of artists back at [...]

Stream new Portugal. The Man
Stream Portugal. The Man's new album Evil Friends ! Absolutely brilliant. It's catchy, upbeat and has ridiculously cool coverart. It's being streamed on tumblr, so be sure to check out all the crazy gifs and b&w photography. The lyrics are deep and thoughtful, beautifully written, as always, and John Gourley's voice and moustache never fail to please. It was produced by none other than Danger Mouse, and he has spun this album into audiovisual gold. He's famed for bands Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells, releasing an album which took 5 years to make ( Rome [...]
New Video: Everything Everything, ‘Don’t Try’
The good times keep on coming from these English lads, from not only their flawless live performances, but their sensational music videos on release of their singles. 'Don't Try' is a great tune, with the clip full of food fights, snippets of fine classic art and frontman Johathan on a white stallion. I'm on a horse. Self directed by Jonathan Higgs he gives us his personal count of it as follows: "Don't Try is about letting it out and this video is all about absolute abandon. You can keep it in inside but [...]
CHVRCHES drop new single, ‘Gun’
This three piece is a band that's not doing much wrong at present. Blowing the masses away at SXSW last week which saw them handed an award for best on ground, they've stuck to their insatiable formula with this single, 'Guns'. It's laced with deliciovs melodies, driving choruses, and good old handclapping happiness. Yum Yum.

Whitley Returns
After taking a couple of years to find himself, in the form of travelling and drinking Ayahuasca in the Amazon jungle, Lawrence Greenwood, known musically as Whitley, is returning with his new album Even The Stars Are A Mess. Famed for his previous albums Go Forth, Find Mammoth and The Submarine , this Melbournian is returning in a huge way, including a Splendor appearance. His soft, sentimental folk has inspired hundreds and we can't wait to hear to whole new album. He begins his tour in Brisbane on the 12th [...]
Tame Impala: Wednesday, May 8 @ Brisbane Convention Centre
Tame Impala arrived at the Brisbane Convention Centre halfway through their latest tour around Australia, bringing Midnight Juggernauts with them to an all ages crowd that was clearly looking forward to going berserk. Put simply, no one went home disappointed. Put more simply, anyone who went home disappointed by that performance doesn’t know what the fuck they’re on about. Midnight Juggernauts are back on the touring circuit after a prolonged stint working on new material, which is due to hit LP form sometime later this year. They used the evening to test out a lot of this stuff [...]
