Tomorrow In Montreal: Against Me!, Girl Talk, Pop Winds, and Grimes

Big day/night tomorrow, 3/24 (shit, almost today). Four shows to choose from: The first two involve Against Me! . The first of those is a FREE ACOUSTIC show at Foufounes at 2pm. WOAH! Last time I heard anything about an acoustic Against Me! (or Tom Gabel, the singer) show THIS is what happened. I was at that show and I will certainly be at this one, so I'm excited. Okay okay so maybe their new stuff is not NEARLY as good (or at least the same) as anything from Reinventing Axl Rose LP [...]

Conscious Insobriety: ‘Eccentrically we Love’ by the Fugitives

Conscious Insobriety: ‘Eccentrically we Love’ by the Fugitives The Fugitives have been described as anything from 'folk-hop' and 'slam-folk' to 'spoken word cabaret'. However, on their latest album, 'Eccentrically We Love', out today on 604 records , The Fugitives move from defying classification towards more traditional pursuits; elegant, thoughtful, and intelligent folk-music. Yet traditional does not mean simplistic. Rather, the album is a contemplative set of coherent musings on topics close to home; any home of any body. From the opening line, 'a house is a snail shell/its walls are so thin/they tell of my neighbours making love [...]

God (what!) Killed the Video Star

God (what!) Killed the Video Star This has been covered elsewhere to death. Maybe we shouldn't post it. Fuck it.

Today At Interstice (Previously At Friendship Cove)

I was just alerted via facebook message that the show previously posted about has been moved to Interstice. Here is the exact message: Hey folks, Due to the power being cut off at Friendship Cove prematurely until Monday, we had to move this show to Interstice (242 RUE YOUNG - RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER FROM FRIENDSHIP COVE). Luckily, the show is still happening and its only one block away from where it was originally supposed to take place. HOORAH! I've never been [...]

Tomorrow At Friendship Cove: Interracial Love Triangle, Holy Cobras, Hell Shovel, and Teenager

Tomorrow, March 2o, Friendship Cove will be the host to another pretty serious show that is being co-presented by two great show promoters, Blues Skies Turn Black and The Pirates of The Lachine Canal . This time the bands come from three different Canadian provinces, but they are connected by either Telephone Explosion Records or Campaign For Infinity (download their music here ), or both. Interracial Love Triangle , the first band, come from Manitoba. They've got another show at Friendship Cove on April 10. The next band, [...]

Unfurl your sails! Review of ‘Understory’ by The Pop Winds

Unfurl your sails! Review of ‘Understory’ by The Pop Winds In anticipation of their debut full length release coming later this year on Arbutus Records , here is our take on last year's highly rated self-released EP 'Understory' by The Pop Winds . The Pop Winds never stray too far from their name. Whereas much of the indie-pop sounds of the last few months have been accurately described as 'breezy'; on their self-released EP 'Understory', The Pop Winds instead blow out a blustery gale of swirling synth pop. It [...]

We Love The New Wave: Album Review of ‘Jungle/Surf’ by Pill Wonder

We Love The New Wave: Album Review of ‘Jungle/Surf’ by Pill Wonder Review of ‘Jungle/Surf’ by Pill Wonder. Wild Animal Kingdom (Tape, sold out) / Underwater Peoples (Vinyl) , Seattle, Washington. 2009/10. Pill Wonder - Jungle/Surf Pill Wonder is the recording moniker of Seattle, Washington resident Will Murder. According to his last.fm page , "he records all of his music on his 2001 Compaq Presario computer with an SM-583 and "he was born in 19873. After listening to Jungle/Surf , [...]

Wake up sepia-head: ‘BTSTU’ by Jai Paul

1. We know reverberated harmonies are big now. 2. We know distorted bass is big now. 3. We know melodies which are satisfyingly major-key are big now. 4. We even know video-game-inspired music is big now. But so does Jai Paul , and he seems ridiculously satisfied with the way things are now. On BTSTU he builds slowly from 1 to 4. All inclusive. You have to love it. Try not to. He dares you; 'Don't fuck with me'. Play this late [...]

Hi-Fidelity Low-Fi: Album Review of ‘Geidi Primes’ by Grimes

Review of 'Geidi Primes' by Grimes. Arbutus Records , Montréal. 2010. Grimes is Claire Boucher. And she could be accused of being too 'of the moment' for her own good. On her debut album, 'Geidi Primes', sparkling melodies and harmonies echo  pre-'Merriweather' Animal Collective, while the dubby low end on tracks such as 'Feyd Rautha Dark Heart'  could have come straight out of a  Hyperdub production. This package, when all wrapped up in last year's indie-hyper-trendy-low-fidelit y-tape-recording-scene has forced me to mention so many current alt-trends [...]

Jay Electronica Is Unbelievably Good

Jay Electronica Is Unbelievably Good Jay Electronica, thanks to rockwellbeats.wordpress.com for the picture I've been listening to Jay Electronica almost nonstop over the past few days. It's pretty much everything I love about hip-hop. He's been getting a lot of blog love lately and he's playing lotsa shows from festivals such as Paid Dues and Bonnaroo to opening for Mos Def on a string of shows across Europe. Big things for this guy, for sure. He's got a few releases, almost all unofficial and no full length yet but tons of tracks out there for your and [...]

This Past Week’s Shows: Braids, Surfer Blood, Silly Kissers And More

3/10/2010 - NEON INDIAN , SILLY KISSERS , and BRAIDS at Le Belmont Wednesday night I missed the Neon Indian (Austin, Texas), Silly Kissers (Montreal, Quebec), and Braids (Montreal, QC) show at Le Belmont.  Neon Indian is someone I've yet to really get into but there has definitely been a lot of blog buzzzzz surrounding this guy. Silly Kissers, who I'll discuss in the Friendship Cove review below, would definitely have been good to see again too. Braids are one of my favourite Montréal based bands at the moment, so I [...]

Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa

Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa I know this is more Steve's forte but African Head Charge's album, "Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa" is incredibly good. This is one of my favorite tracks from it. Check it out if you haven't heard it yet.

From North Of America Vol. 1

From North Of America Vol. 1 So a few weeks ago I made a mixtape (mixcdr?) for a friend compiled from Montreal bands and a few who have members who are at or went to McGill. It seems appropriate that I post it here. I have entitled it "From North Of America Vol. 13 and it consists of 19 songs that serve as a good introduction to the Montreal/McGill music scene. Artist - Song [Website] 1. Braids - Liver and Tan [ http://www.myspace.com/braidsm usic] 2. Postcards - Krayons [ http://www.myspace.com/montrea lpostcards] 3. Tonstartssbandht [...]

Going Places Is Pretty Good, eh?

Going Places Is Pretty Good, eh? Just check it out. The new Yellow Swans album is great. Its too bad it was their farewell. Just a thought, we are going to need some sort of music hosting service here too.
