Eli and the Sound Cult – Worst Thing To Happen To Me

Worst Thing To Happen To Me has a bit of The Strokes vibe to it. Like the old, good Strokes songs. While many rushed to feature One Way Trigger , I didn't really like it and would rather highlight Eli and the Sound Cult's song. Eli and the Sound Cult is the Sacramento-based project of Elijah Jenkins and Jason Bove. They came together in the summer of 2012 after realizing that their combined talents complemented each other well and that they allowed for a larger live experience. Eli and the Sound Cult plan the [...]

Listen to Little Daylight – Overdose

Known for their remixes, Overdose is the first original song by Little Daylight. The track has been popping up on a bunch of different sites the last couple days and for good reason-it's incredibly catchy pop. Little Daylight will premiere their live show at SXSW. Personally, I'm looking forward to hearing what they sound like live and hearing future originals by the trio. Here's their Facebook . Go like them and enjoy Overdose (and I've just thrown in the remix of The Mowgli's San Francisco [...]

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down – We the Common (for Valerie Bolden)

Maybe it is because I live in the South, but the strumming of a banjo always sparks my interest. This song makes me feel as if I am sitting on a porch and listening to music that is spontaneous and born out of a pretty sunset, friends gathering for a cold beer and a little story telling. Thao and the Get Down Stay Down and their single, We the Common (for Valerie Bolden) embodies all of that. It is perfectly fitting to find out Thao Nguyen, as a teen in Virginia, started singing and playing guitar at her mother’s [...]

Dead Feather Moon – “Sons of Royalty”

Dead Feather Moon is a Vista, California-based band comprised of five guys who are just about as rock ‘n roll as it gets. After working their necessary nine-to-five jobs by day, band members Justen Berge (vocalist/guitarist), Jesse Kling (lead guitarist), Greg Peters (multi-instrumentalist), Chris Bowling (bassist) and Tyler Soule (drummer) come together at their small (but well-decorated) practice space next to a retired used car lot by night, focusing on the work that fuels their creativity. The band’s 2011 debut album Dark Sun demonstrated that aside from crafting music that showcases both intense sonic buildups and tender acoustic [...]

Gers Pardoel – Bagagedrager (Ft. Sef)

Gers Pardoel - Bagagedrager ft. Sef
Where I work, we get interns from Holland who live and work in America for a five to six month time span. During that time, I have undoubtedly had these interns listen to music that they’ve never listened to before, music that is featured on 1146 Miles and some that is not. Yesterday was my sixth intern’s last day of working with me. Of all the times I could have listened to Dutch music, I never did until this chick showed up. I asked her to just play me something, anything, and she introduced me to the musical [...]

Callahan – Obliv.

"He Goes As Callahan." Not a standard email subject line. For better or worse, it honestly made me immediately think of Duke Silver and because that was the case, I opened the email and took a listen. I'm thankful I like Parks & Rec. I tell you this story because it exemplifies how little things-thoughts, associations, or objects-can affect so much. I'm writing about an artist that I initially associated with a TV comedy. I'm writing about an email that arrived a year to the day of the moment I felt most lost. I'm writing about [...]

Attention-Grabbing Debut Single from Illumination Road

Rock music for the Golden Age… So declares the Los Angeles-based rock duo Illumination Road on their Bandcamp page . It’s often unclear what the future of rock music looks like, but Christopher Ayden and Chad Mitchell Shlosser are determined to have their say in its continued evolution. Ayden and Shlosser’s first order of business is “What We Say,” the powerful debut single from Illumination Road that premiered last October and precedes their debut album A Fool for the Dream , expected out this spring. For a debut single, “What We Say” deserves some [...]

W.C. Lindsay – Into The Night

Heading into the night, I want to introduce the electropop track Into The Night by W.C. Lindsay. It's addictive. Like really addictive. The song itself is 4 minutes long, and I've passed my day in 4 minute segments. Suffice to say, I've played it a couple dozen times at this point. I can also confirm that it is an awesome song to drive to. It's really got an anthemic quality to it, which makes it an easy listen on repeat in your headphones or in your car. W.C. Lindsay is an eponymous Philly-based act [...]

Waking up to new music by MS MR is a treat. I was looking forward to what the New York band offered as a follow up to Hurricane . There aren't any doubts I was right to anticipate their music. Dustbowl Revival – “Josephine”

Bringing to life the rootsy sound of America’s colorful past are Dustbowl Revival, a group of Venice, CA musicians who play music like the 1930s never ended. All the sounds one imagines when thinking of Americana roots music (harmonica, washboard, layered harmonies, even the kazoo) spring to life with ease, begging the question of why anyone would ever trade such classic instruments for anything else. For all modern music has to offer these days, it's often difficult to figure out how to work in a kazoo. In addition to the nostalgia factor rooted in this song, there’s just [...]

The Airplanes – A Summer Daydream Part I

Jingle jangle: a sound that I normally partner up with the month of December. However, today’s case of the jingle jangles is in the form of a jangly pop song from the noise pop outfit The Airplanes. The song caught my attention in the first ten seconds with the lo-fi jangles, and I've been listening to it on repeat ever since. The Airplanes hail from Fayetteville, Arkansas. You can find them on Facebook here . This track, A Summer Daydream Part I , is sure to tickle your fancy if you’re into funky lo-fi [...]

Wild Party – Nicely Done

We've previously featured Wild Party here at 1146 miles. Their style of indie rock is reminiscent of early The Killers (see Life's Too Short ) and has a radio-friendly verve to it. They've recently released a new album and I wanted to feature Nicely Done today. It is another example of catchy rock that had my attention from the first time I heard Wild Party. Other highlights on the album include When I Get Older , Connect The Dots , Take My Advice , and the aforementioned Life's Too Short . [...]

The Royal Concept – World On Fire

World On Fire sees the continuation of the big indie pop sound that The Royal Concept has staked out as their sound. I've previously featured The Royal Concept as they produced one of my favorite EPs of 2012. I'm happy to hear that their new song is just as catchy as their debut EP. For those not familiar, you might hear hints of Phoenix or The Strokes in World On Fire and other songs from The Royal Concept. The Swedish band is made up of David Larson, Filip Bekic, Povel Olsson, [...]

Carroll – “Lead Balloon”

In a basement on Carroll Avenue in crazy cold Minnesota, Brian Hurlow from Seattle, Charlie Rudoy from NYC, Max Kulicke from Philly, and Charles McClung from Nebraska, all play some meaningful music together. After hearing only two of their songs, I am excited to listen to their debut EP, Needs , that is out next month. They describe themselves as psychedelic-shoegazey-pop. Whatever the label, it is unquestionably cool. Clear resonating vocals, interesting lyrics, and soothing musical sounds create a song that is memorable. So much warmth is coming from that cold place on Carroll Avenue. Listen to [...]

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister – The Same Old Ground

And we all come back again, to the same old ground, the one where we began. The debut LP, Nobody Dances in This Town , for He's My Brother She's My Sister is coming out this month and if you've ever seen them live, you've probably been waiting on the album. They put on a memorable show-the highlight being the tap-dancing drum solo. The live efforts have translated well to their full-length. My favorite song on the album is The Same Old Ground . I believe it's actually a cover, [...]

“You” Hints of Take-Off Potential for The 1975

Stepping powerfully forward into a year that has not yet earned its musical labels is The 1975 , a rising four-man band from Manchester. Mixing together elements of numerous genres ranging everywhere from pop-punk to indie-rock and more, The 1975 have big touring and album release plans in the works for 2013 that are getting fans across the pond and around the world excited for their debut LP. In the last six months, the band released two EPs, with their second EP Sex delivering a short set of songs that remix artists have been clamoring to work [...]

Night Beds – Ramona

Night Beds - "Ramona" (Official Audio)
I'm loving me some Dead Oceans artists recently . To be fair, the label is one of the very best out there so I'm not the first (nor will I be the last) singing its praises or raving about one of their artists. This time, it's Night Beds, the moniker of Colorado Springs native Winston Yellen. 2013 is going to be very kind to him. Many are anticipating his debut album. Every song he has released is critically acclaimed. Every song that he has released has been good. Ramona is [...]

Moddison: A Creative Album Video Venture for Milo Greene

Some bands shoot music videos; others work on a slightly larger scale. Milo Greene , an indie-pop outfit based in Los Angeles, released their debut self-titled album last summer, and with it came an album video. Titled Moddison after a song on the album with the same name, this 37-minute film is tailored directly to the album, following a narrative that could be drawn from the band’s lyrical content as the entire LP plays through. Filmed primarily around Shaver Lake, California, Moddison is notable for the creative filming techniques utilized by director Chad Huff. The [...]

Local Natives – Heavy Feet

2013 brings so much promise...promises of new year, new music, and maybe even a new perspective. With all of that said, there are times when I just like the tried and true sound that soothes me. I have always loved Local Natives . Just a few days ago, they released a new song from their album, Hummingbird , which drops on January 29th. Their distinctive vocals, rooted drums, and heartfelt lyrics in their new song, "Heavy Feet", grabbed me immediately. Local Natives proves once again to read my somewhat melancholy mood. Is it just me? Maybe it is [...]
