Local Natives – Heavy Feet

2013 brings so much promise...promises of new year, new music, and maybe even a new perspective. With all of that said, there are times when I just like the tried and true sound that soothes me. I have always loved Local Natives . Just a few days ago, they released a new song from their album, Hummingbird , which drops on January 29th. Their distinctive vocals, rooted drums, and heartfelt lyrics in their new song, "Heavy Feet", grabbed me immediately. Local Natives proves once again to read my somewhat melancholy mood. Is it just me? Maybe it is [...]

DJ Echoes’ Favorites from Yesteryear (2012)

I toyed with the idea of scouring Soundcloud, Stereogum, Pitchfork, and Bandcamp to find songs released in the past 36 hours to make the world's first Best Of 2013 list, but reason eventually prevailed. Without further ado (and there has been much ado), here are my favorite albums and tracks of 2012: Favorite Album: good kid, m.A.A.d. city  by Kendrick Lamar Honorable Mentions: Ask Me This  by Alcoholic Faith Mission Cobra Juicy  by Black Moth Super Rainbow Favorite [...]

Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics – “My Dear”

What better way to start the year than with a great song by a promising up-and-coming band? This one will blow your mind: featuring a vocalist who sounds like she could easily be one of the classic soul singers of the 1960s, a well-rounded horn section and snappy swinging beats, the soul-fused rhythm & blues group Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics are a band to keep an eye on in the new year. “My Dear” is a single off the Atlanta, GA-based group’s debut album It’s About Time , released in Sept. 2012. With an initial start [...]

The Mowgli’s – San Francisco

I intended to take a couple days off of writing at the beginning of the year; sickness extended that absence and rendered me incapacitated for several of the past days. At various points, I couldn't walk, talk, or function. I did not want to eat and as it relates to here, I did not want to listen to music because of a constant headache. So, yeah, great start of 2013 for me. Fortunately, whatever I had seems to have finally passed. Last year, I started the new year with a post featuring Go On . [...]

Favorite Albums of 2012

Favorite Albums of 2012 Favorite Albums of the Year Our last post of the year is the favorite albums list. Just like last year , I'll present my list of favorite albums from the year before I jump on my flight back to Denver. 2012 was an impressive year for albums, in my opinion. Last year, I had 3 albums that I loved and a bunch of [...]

PAPA – I Am The Lion King

I've been thinking about 2013 a lot recently. I guess it makes sense because it's almost the new year. I thought I would share some thoughts, a recent favorite, and a prediction. I'll start with the prediction: I think 2013 will be the Year of the LA Bands. Lord Huron, HAIM, and Local Natives are all poised for big years. LA's prominence in indie music and music at-large has faded a little (at least that's my opinion; bands don't feel the need to move there as much to make it). It's the headquarters of the old guard of [...]

Meera’s Favorite Tracks of 2012

2012: The year that the world was supposed to end, or so the Mayans said. 2012 has been a whirlwind of a year. However, when I look back at it, it wasn’t that much of a whirlwind. It seems like a big blur, the longest stretch of a year. Granted, we did get an extra day with it being leap year and all. In 2012, I visited friends and family in some cities that I’ve never been to before, I went to a fair amount of awesome shows, and I spent quality time with loved ones-though not enough quality time. [...]

Hawk and Steel – “Danger Road”

Hawk and Steel - Danger Road
Everyone enjoys the occasional silent night-a quiet, cozy evening sitting beside a crackling fire, with your mind wiped clear of worries and the world no larger than the room you’re in. It’s the peace these moments bring that we love so much, and utter silence is often required to bring this feeling about. How special would it be to find a band that could play into that silence without disrupting the peace? Meet Hawk and Steel, an acoustic folk/indie rock group from Victoria, BC. In the title track of the band’s first full-length album Danger Road (released November [...]

Ian’s Favorite Songs of 2012

Lord Huron - Lonesome Dreams
2012 was a bad year. It was a year that we were dispirited, downtrodden, and above all, desperate for something real and hopeful. It was a year where the triumphs were short-lived and the losses were forever. It was a year when we subjected to gimmicks, commercial encroachment, and a further insulation from others. Contemporary music reflected all of this to varying degrees (and with varying degrees of success). This blog has, at times, tried to capture some of this banal spirit. That's not to say that we should wave the white flag to all [...]

Brighton MA – Good Kind Of Crazy

I dislike the blatant commercialism of the holidays. Honestly, it's one of the only things that I don't like about the holiday season. So with that being said, you'll have to forgive me for featuring a song that is a centerpiece of a Jack Daniel's holiday ad. This blog may focus on the sepia-colored nostalgia of yesteryears occasionally and it's in that vein that I was looking for holiday song to represent 2012 for me. Insert the Jack Daniel's ad and I have my Christmas song to go with the classics. Good [...]

Carrie’s Favorite Songs of 2012

Jack White - Love Interruption
As I looked over my playlists from the year 2012, I have tried to only add the songs that either charge me up or songs that seem to find a way to my heart and soul. Here are my favorites for 2012. I couldn’t possibly rank them, so they are simply listed in the order that they were released. Editor's Note: The majority of the songs are in a playlist at the bottom of the post page. Cloud Nothings - "Stay Useless" This song reminds me of that awkward wonky [...]

Band To Watch: Vasa Debuts with Powerful Instrumental Rock EP

This instrumental rock collective from Glasgow, Scotland released their debut EP Never Have Dreams earlier this month through Overlook Records. If you like the complex layering and musical buildup of bands like Explosions in the Sky, you’ll love these guys. “Cynthia,” the band’s first single, is a practice in patient restraint: the song starts with a tricky lick and builds consistently to the point of explosion at 1:30. I’ve listened to the song dozens of times over the past month and it still holds me captive the whole way through. Stream/download the song through the SoundCloud link above and listen to [...]

Favorite Discoveries From Other Year-End Lists 2012

BOY - Little Numbers
One of my favorite things about year-end lists are other's year-end lists. I'm voracious consumer of music but there are more songs than minutes to listen to them. Year-end lists help curate those songs that I've never heard and allow me to go out to blogs I don't normally read to find music that is new to me. This post is a celebration of that and some of the songs I've discovered by reading other year-end lists. I hope you enjoy this music as much as I do. FAYE – Water Against [...]

Lifehouse Teams Up With Peter Frampton In “Right Back Home”

Lifehouse -- Right Back Home (Lyrics)
The band that delivered some of the sweetest lyrics on record in the 00’s is back-2012, meet Lifehouse’s sixth studio album, Almeria . Don’t go expecting Lifehouse to deliver an album full of “You and Me”s or “Hanging By a Moment”s; what fun would that be? This time around, Lifehouse pulled Natasha Bedingfield into the mix for the first single off Almeria “Between the Raindrops,” a testament to the pop trend that was present on the group’s last record and which continues throughout this latest release. Despite the repetitive and at times simplistic nature of [...]

Work Drugs – Young Lungs

Work Drugs – Young Lungs Every once in awhile, I get sucked into the hype machine and featuring newly released songs, but you can understand when you listen to Young Lungs by Work Drugs, in this case. It's awesome. Young Lungs was officially released yesterday after being shared privately with fans for a month. It's a celebration of Work Drugs's 2 years and of the group's growth. The self-described "sedative-wave/smooth-fi" Philly-based group is fronted by Tom Crystal and Ben Louisiana. Simply, Young Lungs is indie dance pop at its finest and it'll [...]

Lilly Wood and The Prick – Le Mas

I came across this track in a rather roundabout way. I was listening to a mix of French jazz mix the other day (not exactly my go-to or my twentieth choice normally but it is what I was listening to nevertheless) and I was trying to find one song from that mix on Sunday. I couldn't find it but I stumbled upon this song from Lilly Wood and The Prick. It is not jazz, but it is French. I was enchanted with the lead vocals on the first listen. I still am and that's why I'm sharing. [...]

Favorite EPs of 2012

Favorite EPs of 2012 It's my opinion that 2012 wasn't quite as strong as 2011 as far as EPs are concerned. Perhaps it's just listening bias that is limiting my selection this year but I don't feel like I did last year when I noted I was more in love with my favorite EPs of the year than my favorite albums. Cruiser - Cruiser EP Don't Go Alone is my song choice to highlight Philly's Cruiser. You can listen to the whole EP here . [...]

In Memoriam: Ravi Shankar

Ravi Shankar at Monterey Pop
The legendary sitarist, musical guide, and entrancing performer Ravi Shankar passed away on Tuesday. Nearly two years ago, I had the incredible luck of meeting Shankar at his home in Encinitas, CA. It was the first music interview I had ever been a part of, and in addition to gaining insight on interview styles from my own mentor, I was able to appreciate the sharp mind of a living legend. On that day, Shankar seemed to emit an aura that spoke volumes of his musical knowledge and experience – it is rare for an artist to maintain a musical career [...]

The Belle Game – Wait Up For You

New music from The Belle Game that will catch your ear and hypnotize you. Wait Up For You keeps with the band's unique combination of dark, almost mysterious sound and Arcade Fire-type orchestral rock. They are releasing Wait Up For You as a single through Bella Union. Wait Up For You / Wasted Light will be available on 7″ vinyl in January. The Belle Game is an orchestral noise pop band originating from British Columbia. The Canadian group formed in 2009. The band currently consists of Adam Nanji, Andrea [...]
