See I Care

Datarock - Not Me Today was a lovely sunny day, where the whole world feels energised. This was a good day to listen to Datarock's new E.P. for the first time. See What I Care will be the Norwegians first new release since their 2005 self titled debut, and it makes great listening. Compared to the album this new material is notably more upbeat. Not Me, the opening track which you can download from the link above, is the perfect example of this. The track 'See What I [...]

I haven't been this confused since I heard a Drum 'n' Bass remix of Johnny Cash

When one artist covers another artist's song, it can sound radically different, bring some new nuances to it, or just be plain amusing. But when you those two artists are: Then things get just a little odd... Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Alanis Morissette's cover of 'My Humps' [...]

Hello!

Hello! Hi there! My name is Alex, and I'm the new kid on the block at Radio Ed1t! Hello Duncan, and thank you for having me here :) Before I start on here, I thought I'd introduce myself so you can see where I'm coming from: I am just starting out at this blogging thing, and decided to try out music journalism after fully realising how passionate I am about music. I'm a music geek. (That is, I am a geek who loves music, AND a music geek). I like a lot of different [...]

Live Earth

Live Earth XRRF are reporting the lineup for Live Earth this year. For some reason they list the full American lineup, but just synopsize the British one, which is odd, but the UK acts playing are: Headlining: Madonna, the Chili Peppers and the Foo Fighters. Lower on the bill: Genesis, Duran Duran, Keane, Snow Patrol, the Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys, Razorlight, Corinne Bailey Rae, Bloc Party, David Gray, Paolo Nutini, and Damien Rice. Ouch. As my girlfriend just so rightly said: "It makes [...]

Travelling Bands

It has been a while since I last made a contribution to this award winning music blog, and to be honest I really can't explain why that is. However I generally like to post something before I go on holidays, so here I am. I think that music plays an especially valuable role when on holiday. The soundtrack to certain trips becomes important in framing the whole experience, and is something that I remember every bit as well as the places that I visit and the activities that I do. On my last holiday I [...]

A number of things

A number of things Hello all, here's a couple of quick housekeeping things, a bit of musing on DRM and an mp3. (i) I'd to welcome the delightful Alex ( sparkly_groover ) to the team here at RAD!O ED!T. I'm aware that our posting has been a little lax lately, especially as I've been writing for Who Needs Radio? weekly and CMU not much less than that. I have absolutely no excuse for why Ken or Caz haven't been posting either, but [...]

LIVE REVIEW: Kunek and Dorian Small at VZD's, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Mar 2

LIVE REVIEW: Kunek and Dorian Small at VZD's, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Mar 2 LIVE REVIEW: Kunek and Dorian Small at VZD's, Oklahoma City , Oklahoma on Mar 2 This is Dorian Small's second gig ever. No sign of nerves, though – he and his backing band seem to be having a great time. Acoustic pop melodies mesh smoothly with samples and plenty of synth, much like Simple Kid or Brendan Benson, while numerous audience members whisper to their friends that they've [...]

Argh, Tentacles!

Oi oi. I've not posted here in a while. It's because I've been busy - writing for Popjustice , weekly posts on Who Needs Radio? and gig reviews for CMU Daily . Between all that, it's difficult to get the time to sprinkle content onto my radio.edit baby. Still, it's a nice outlet for the mixes I make from time to time. radio.edit - Argh, Tentacles! Mix Speak of the devil, here's one I made earlier. Very techno. Tracklisting is thus: [...]

The all-important list of the year!

I?ve noticed that at around this time of year the music press becomes obsessed with compiling lists of everything that?s gone on in the last year. Top 50 albums, singles, gigs, haircuts, postures etc. This seems to have stemmed a lot of people to ask me what my favourite album of the year is, and I?ve found this a ridiculously hard question to answer. I could go with the press who seem to have resoundingly chosen Arctic Monkeys as the number 1 album of the year. But I won?t because I don?t agree. In fact, I could [...]

Top Fifty

Top Fifty Hello, Apologies I haven't posted in a little while, had a lot of work on, and not *that* much has been exciting me musically, with the exception of a bunch of DFA radio mixes that someone posted up on another blog I read. Regardless, resurrecting blogs appears to be the new black, so here goes. The almighty Filip has challenged my to list my top 50 albums ever, in order. Only one album per artist. I'm not sure the order's quite right, and when I got it down to 60 or so, I was just taking [...]

Live Review: The Evangelicals at the Opolis, Norman, Oklahoma on 3 Nov 06

Evangelicals at the Opolis, Norman, Oklahoma on 3 Nov 06 The dividing line between ‘local’ bands and bands that have left their local scene and gone on to bigger and better things is often all too blatant. Evangelicals display tonight that they’re comfortably past that line. Norman’s favourite three-piece rock band write complicated psychedelic pop songs tinged with both melancholy and surrealism, and drenched in reverb. The band have been touring all over the country recently and singer/guitarist Josh Jones tells the crowd that ‘it’s been too long since we’ve played in Norman’. You can tell [...]

Box Of Love

How's about this for Christmas number 1? This year's Nizlopi?

My Autumnal mix

Thought I’d jump on Duncan’s bandwagon and give you my most recent iPod playlist that’s been invading me ears as I get squashed in tubes, bored on national express coaches and rained on as I walk down High Street Kensington. All I can say is these particular tunes make all these experiences seem somewhat less painful, which is why I often break down in tears when my iPod battery runs out and I’m forced to suffer these unpleasant events in silence. Pathetic I know. The order here is insignificant as I generally put the playlist on shuffle. I don’t know [...]

Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins at Cain's Ballroom, Tulsa on Oct 24

Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins at Cain's Ballroom, Tulsa on Oct 24 Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins at Cain's Ballroom, Tulsa, Oklahoma on Oct 24 Cain's Ballroom resonates with age. Portraits of old country singers stare down from the walls, and the atmosphere is thick. Onto the stage steps Khaela Maricich, one half of opening act The Blow. “I've heard this place is haunted”, she says, “by the ghost of Bob Wills”. She apologises that the other half of her band isn't present, explaining that he's on tour in France, and so all that's left is her. The act, therefore, just consists of her singing and dancing [...]

Asleep in the back

Asleep in the back Okay, made another mix. In fact, I made it a long time ago on Junction11 , but I'd like to post it here because I've been listening to it this morning, and I'd half forgotten about it. It's lots of dreamy floaty indie stuff, and it's pefect for long car journeys. Whack it on your mp3 player and see. radio.edit - Asleep In The Back Tracklisting is the following: Godspeed You Black Emperor - The Dead Flag Blues British Sea Power - Men Together Today [...]

A Slow Return; A Choice Selection

It's a while since I've contributed, so to make up for lost time I thought I'd do a 'bumper' post containing a number of the more interesting songs that have been regularly repeated in my precious free time over the past few weeks. Brakes - No Return I first drew attention to Brakes on this very blog earlier this year. They now have a new album, 'Beautific Visions' which compared to the first, is more mature affair. Okay so it contains songs called 'Porcupine or Pineapple' which highlight the smile [...]

A whole new world of pain...

Oh my word. Jordan and Peter Andre have recorded a duetty cover of A Whole New World - yes - the song from Aladdin. You can listen to it here . The start's a bit slow, but stick with it till 1:13, when Jordan joins in. Oh my word.

Guillemots / Songbird

Guillemots / Songbird I'm excited. I'm often in a state of giddy excitement, but tonight I'm especially excited for two reasons. Here they are: The Guillemots The Guillemots are surprisingly good. Well, they surprised me, anyway. A young lady called Gemma put me on to them a few weeks ago when I asked her for a recommendation, and I've been enjoying their album considerably since. I've not seen a lot of writing in the blogosphere about Guillemots, which surprises me, so here's a couple of their tracks to spread [...]
