Happy Thursday! (“Good As New” by Vacationer)

///Sweater Weather/// With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we’re deep in the heart of Fall. Before you know it there’ll be snow everywhere and the type of frost hanging around that will make you want to never go outside - not to mention, Christmas songs playing everywhere you go. Here are 10 autumnal tracks to help you appreciate the remainder of the world’s best season. (this collection is also good for long trips home, driving around aimlessly in your hometown, and trying to avoid family. happy thanksgiving!) Download the zip . [...]

This haunting number from Chicago-based indie quartet What, What? is getting worn out from all the plays I’m submitting it to in my iTunes. Built around a hypnotic 4-note riff, the song slowly envelopes you into a groovy, awesome trance, and before you know it you can’t remember how you got there. Taken from their recent EP, No, Yeah (love the title), “The Tease” is available on the group’s bandcamp .

In a world where the notion of a ‘cover’ has become synonymous to ‘I just sang the song they wrote because I wanted to, too’ rather than taking an artistic liberty and paying homage to the original track, UK singer/songwriter Patrick Wolf is making his own beautiful music covering the title song from Lana Del Rey’s first studio album, “Born To Die.” Originally performed on the Dermot O’Leary radio show, Wolf takes Del Rey’s track and scales it down, turning it into a ballad of epically naked proportion, opening with a lush harp and [...]
I didn’t think I could like this song anymore than I already did, but the Japanese version is just too great.

New York City native Alison Valentine is catching my ear with her lush disco track, “Peanut Butter.” This tropical, surf-infused dance number will appear on her forthcoming EP, the appropriately named Swimming Pool Sounds , which should drop sooner rather than later (fingers crossed). Check it on her SoundCloud .

This track from Brooklyn newcomer City Brat is infectious - you’ve been warned. Moving between its jumpy speak-sing verse and the more melodic chorus, “Yeah It’s There” grabbed me and won’t let go. It’s a catchy, sunny anthem to ride out these last days of summer. Download the tune for free(!) on SoundCloud .
I’m vibin’ with the sounds from this self-proclaimed sex-pop outfit Night Panther . While it might not be the sexiest thing you’ve ever heard, these songs are catchy as hell and I guess the band can call their music whatever they want. In fact, they even have a video that does just that: Makes sense to me. Check out the above track “Fever” on their bandcamp .

This song is like breath of fresh, cool air. Princess Music is a group of classically-trained musicians who have banded together to create what they call “music for princesses,” which ends up sounding like the folk sensibilities of Sufjan Stevens combined with the vocal stylings of Dirty Projectors. The strings in this piece are killing me, and the absence of any electronic element is a welcome one. I can’t wait for fall. Listen on SoundCloud .

I’m hooked on this song. It sounds like summer/early fall all the way. It’s “No Other Plans” by Sunny Levine. Now it’s the weekend, go out and play!

dancing in the summer heat Songs like this sexy electro jam from Shook make this year’s never-ending heatwave far more bearable. Let’s all embrace the heat and turn up those speakers. Download the track on bandcamp . Special thanks to Pierreism for consistently delivering some of the best music finds out there.

Give this song some time to envelope you in its repetition, it’s worth the wait. Taken from the Brooklyn-based electro folk group Here We Go Magic ’s latest release, the song “How Do I Know” asks many questions with its lyrics, but the confidence of the steady instrumental pulse sounds like the very opposite of questioning. Check out A Different Ship on iTunes .

This song opens with a recording of Frank Sinatra speaking - it stole my heart right away. And it’s rap!

Amid the UNREAL number of Gotye remixes floating around cyberspace, this one really sticks out to me. Tanlines has mellowed out “Eyes Wide Open” (a personal favorite of mine). The original is upbeat, pulsing, feels permanently on edge. The remix is gentler but feels stronger in some way at the same time. Enjoiii. Listen on Soundcloud .

It’s been a minute since I’ve posted a track on here, but it only takes one song to bring me back. “Five Seconds,” the latest from new wave artist Twin Shadow , is a driving, 80’s-fueled 4 minutes that I can’t get enough of. I hope you feel the same. Listen to it on SoundCloud baby.

This Swedish Ken doll does more than just look pretty. Magnus Tingsek will give your Saturday everything it’s missing. The track is from his 2009 album Restless Soul. Soundcloud: Tingsek - Good v. Bad

I’m a huge fan of the original, and this version of Marvin Gaye’s “Sunny” adds some spunk…it feels so good to finally reach the line, “The dark days are gone…” Nothing can beat the classic, but this one is pretty fun. Download “Sunny” - Mercury Edit II on SoundCloud .

Mellow out to this! “We Can’t Be Friends” by Dream Koala on SoundCloud .

I am thrilled by the folk-pop domination of Austin duo, Wild Child. Stretch out in the sand, close your eyes and get soulful. Download: Wild Child - Silly Things
