Tweet New Biffy Clyro : What more is there to say about the short, hairy Scots? We could add our lavish praise to the huge compendium of affection that exists for these angry hobbit like rockstars but, we won't. We could say it better than anyone else of course, after all, this is the greatest new music blog ever, EVER. But, we just won't, we prefer to save our finest adulation for those at the other end of [...]

Tweet At SGTMT we seem to prefer Ultraísta as re-interpreted by others, rather than Ultraísta themselves, this being the second remix of superstar producer Nigel Godrich 's band we've recommended to you in preference to the original versions. That sentence was too long. But what the heck, let's live a little. As this review which we've just come across supposes, the band are easier to admire than love. It may be that the tweaking by other artists makes them easier [...]

Tweet At SGTMT HQ we haven't alphabetised our record collection. No, no, no. We've not gone chronological and we've not gone by sleeve colour (if you've never seen a CD collection arranged according to the colours of the rainbow then you've never lived). These are all worthy ways of collating your tunes BUT there is yet a greater way... At the SGTMT nerve-center we've organised our tunes by 'Awesomeness'. Good grief our mythical selves are such losers. Battleships sit [...]

Tweet This is perfect. I could wax lyrical all day long about this but I've run out of wax. Anyways, my hairdresser recommended I use clay in my hair NOT wax. I remember the days when the only options were hairspray (which your mum used) or gel. Moose, wax, clay all just baffle me. Hold on a second... we were talking about something us weren't we? Ah yes, Flight Facilities perfect Clair De Lune . Flight Facilities are made up of [...]

Tweet Would you like to hear something that will warm the cockles of your heart? Hold on a second. What on earth does 'cockles of your heart' mean? An idiotic idiom if ever I've heard one (which I have mind). Anyways, forget the cockles (that's sound advice in more ways than one). Check out the description of Paradise on their SoundCloud : Tony and Joseph write songs for their band "Paradise" in Joseph's bedroom. Sometimes they record [...]

Tweet This morning, Team SGTMT were woken at the ungodly hour of 9.30am by our alarm clock. Today was a special day. We didn't need to be up to go to a meeting with the council regarding noise complaints, or to tidy up our mess before the landlord comes to inspect the latest damage, or anything else mundane. This morning we had to attend to Operation Tickets . That's right readers, we were up early to buy gig tickets. Often we're [...]

Tweet Earlier this week we let a friend of ours into SGTMT HQ. We made him wipe his shoes first, don't worry. We spent an evening spinning vinyl from the 70s & 80s and some CDs of more recent vintage. Good times were had. Few things beat music discovery whether new or old tunes. One artist that came to my attention was Luke Sital-Singh . I've spent the time since exploring his back catalogue and am enthused. Luke Sital-Singh is from London and [...]

Tweet Well this was a frustrating evening. Husband and wife duo Exit Music took the stage in London last night, joined by a friend and his box of sounds, having come all the way from Hurricane Sandy-battered New York to do so, and on Election Night too. A big night indeed. They bring their unique sound; one half dreamy gothic folk, one half 4/4 beats and electronic wizardry, to this small venue which holds perhaps 60 people for the occasion. Team SGTMT [...]

Tweet Right. I don't know what to write about this band. I had an eloquent and jocular piece penned about singing minstrels and the hazards of collecting hitch-hikers. It was of some amusement (most likely to me only) but had no relation to Mt. Wolf . I then scribbled a second post written about, imaginatively, wolfs and, like, mountains. Yep, bad. I normally don't go through any drafts (you can tell I'm sure) or deletions when writing posts for SGTMT. However [...]

Tweet Sometimes, only sometimes mind, we at SGTMT HQ go to work. We have proper jobs right, we don't just lark around all day spinning coloured vinyl and blogging on the world wide web world. And sometimes, only sometimes of course, our work can be a little laborious. Fortunately on those days we can rely on Scandinavian Space Disco to keep us going. Today the Scandinavian Space Disco (who would have thought it) comes from the undeniably talented Lindstrøm . [...]

Tweet Wheel Wells (or possibly The Wheel Wells, we're not sure) have a mission, a stated goal that they vigorously pursue. No seriously, you can find this bold statement on their website : Throughout our journey we have always kept the same goal: to make people feel great. Across the North Yankland city of Toronto the Wheel Wells have been making people feel great for several years. But at team SGTMT HQ we [...]

Tweet In 2009 Nick Principe moved to Portland, Oregon, Yankland and launched his musical alter-ego Port St. Willow . Now based in Brooklyn, New York he's recently (well, five months ago) let loose the debut album Holiday . I learnt all of this today. I'm kinda disappointed it took me as long as five months. Internet, you've failed me, go sit in the corner dunce. Holiday is a beautifully eccentric album. At first glance it's just a less than famous, lo-fi, Brooklyn [...]

Tweet Tonight is one of those nights. One of those nights where it is a privilege to witness a special show. Those nights where a beaming smile telegraphs all night how lucky you're feeling to be present. The ones that live long in the memory. Tonight is one of those. Efterklang 's Piramida LP began its journey a year ago in Spitsbergen , a long-abandoned ghost town in the Arctic visited by the band to collect the sounds that would [...]

Tweet Here at SGTMT HQ we have damp issues. No, don't worry Tim hasn't been wetting the bed again, he assures us it won't happen again and he's very embarrassed about it so please don't mention it or tell anyone. No the damp is in the walls, and apparently it's either penetrative, rising or due to condensation. Urgh. Sadly our DIY skills are somewhat lacking. The front door is held on by gaffa tape and we just painted the windows rather than [...]

Tweet At this present moment I'm hiding underneath a set of headphones doing everything possible to obscure my eyes and defend my ears from the offense to popular culture that is Downton Abbey (I've never watched it, yet somehow I feel totally comfortable in making grand sweeping gestures of snobbish criticism, ha). I've decided that to fight the evil power of Downton I must counteract it with the most opposite music to the TV show that I can find. And, for that purpose, what [...]

Tweet I've been an expert air-guitar player for years. Seriously I have. Way before there were air-guitar competitions and they turned pretending to play guitar (and simultaneously looking like an idiot) into a computer game. Way, way prior to that, in the beginning, I was there, banging at imaginary riffs and OWNING the art of pretend power chords. But, in all my days of instrumental pretence I've rarely (if ever) played air-xylophone. Wait, wait; of course! No Surprises, I must have air-jammed on my [...]

Tweet Tomorrow we host a three year old's birthday party. There is a Peppa Pig cake, they'll be party games and I'm fairly convinced after about 20 mins I'll be desperately trying to encourage them to play an elongated game of sleeping lions. I get one privilege at the kids birthday parties, one domain which is mine and mine only: Music. That's right people, I DJ for toddler birthday parties. Yep, you thought that small children like nursery rhymes and the Wiggles, no, no they don't. [...]

Tweet Some music just bursts at you. It grabs you by the throat, stares right through your eyes and pins you to the floor. You're arrested, stopped as if dead. The feelings songs evoke can be quite different, but in all sorts of different ways music can be completely arresting. That's the sort of music we yearn to yell about on SGTMT . Other times songs gently weave their way into your consciousness, gently wooing you over time. Even an instant dislike can [...]

Tweet We know why you come here, you know. You come for two things: Firstly, you come be regaled by scintillating, Pulitzer Prize-winning tales of the goings on at SGTMT Headquarters . Equal parts entertaining and informative. Both captivating and whimsical. We know you adore it. Secondly, you come for a consistently high standard of music recommendation. Tweet Some people think that punk ate itself when Greenday turned American Idiot into a musical. I disagree. Punk ate itself when The Clash released an Album called Cut The Crap and when the Sex Pistols signed for Richard Branson. That's right, Branson. The jumper wearing beardo with a messiah complex. Punk always itself. That's what it does. A new band comes along, burns brightly for a bit and then disappears into nothingness. But Punk being Punk it doesn't care. That's the point. [...]
