Boy, Did They Get Lucky: Daft Punk Have a Formula One Race Car! Feed Me Announces Upcoming Break From Music

Feed Me Announces Upcoming Break From Music Jon Gooch, the DJ/production dynamo behind dubstep/electro entity Feed Me and influential drum 'n' bass project Spor, announced via Twitter that he plans to take a respite from DJing in the fall. The news was certainly unexpected, especially considering that Gooch has been touring consistently and has become a major name on the global electronic music scene. "I went to a Dance Music 'EDC' event last week and had absolutely no idea what was going on," he tweeted. "...However I've got a pressing feeling that its not...what I'm supposed to be doing. Around Autumn time I intent to stop, at [...]

Another Sign of the EDM Apocalypse: Paris Hilton House Album Due This Summer

Another Sign of the EDM Apocalypse: Paris Hilton House Album Due This Summer After making a shambolic debut as a DJ in Sao Paulo last summer and later spinning at Cannes, Paris Hilton has made good on her promise to make house music all night long. The heiress has announced to Showbiz 411 that she has signed to Cash Money Records and will issue her dance themed second album in the summer. Hilton reportedly received production help from her now ex-beau Afrojack and has been quoted as saying that the upcoming full-length sounds "more house" and vastly different from her first pop album. What else is Hilton [...]

Compilation Review: ‘Tectonic Plates Volume 4′ (Tectonic)

Compilation Review: ‘Tectonic Plates Volume 4′ (Tectonic) ★★★☆☆ After Volume 3 revelled in accepting missions of infiltrating clandestine factions and subversive bass metamorphoses, Volume 4 arrives with an expansion team staying both on-point and ahead of the pack by cultivating its dubstep rams and raids. Jakes begins the fourth quarter with more of the same speaker stalking and severing, despite being backed by a gameshow choir that could make you millions, and Kryptic Minds and Steve Digital explore contrasting digital lost worlds where one wrong move and the walls cave in. So Tectonic have hardly lightened up, [...]

Gear Review: Ableton Live 9 Suite

Gear Review: Ableton Live 9 Suite It doesn’t happen very often that an instrument comes along that changes the way we look at music, let alone an entire recording environment. When Ableton launched their first version of Live in 2001, electronic music as we knew it underwent a complete and total makeover. This revolutionary DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) was the first of its kind concentric to loop-based musician and performer. With this new environment, musicians could finally record, jam, edit and create sounds, without ever having to stop the sequencer. This environment also marked the end of the era for the hardware sampler. Since computer technology [...]

Compilation Review: ‘Grime 2.0′ (Big Dada)

Compilation Review: ‘Grime 2.0′ (Big Dada) ★★★☆☆ Not a compilation giving a chance to MCs to run their mouth — and they’d be hard pressed to make words stick here anyhow — it’s the turn of producer overlords and instrumental heavies to pull up and create chaos. From beat one, roughneck enterprise creates pixelated nightmares (Youngstar) raked with too-hot-to-handle bassline gunfire, unwieldy brute force that makes any silence deathly, and realises epic high speed chases (J Beatz) or predatory games of off-future hide and seek. All the while keeping alive a DIY ethic that magnifies the bedroom studio setup to a monstrous [...]

Album Review: Jimpster / ‘Porchlight and Rockingchairs’ (Freerange)

Album Review: Jimpster / ‘Porchlight and Rockingchairs’ (Freerange) ★★★☆☆ Recorded when the morning after has come too soon, Jimpster’s easygoing deep house and soul solutions make enquiries as to the lounge’s opening hours. When engaging space-sprinkled themes, Jamie Odell regularly checks his distance away from the bar and when to engage in the dancefloor’s throng, battling to energise and refresh you. "Hold My Hand" is for when the techno-schooled nightowl wants to come out and play, mildly more persuasive in telling you to convert your casual head-nod into something more pro-active; while "High Wire" is a soul clap gesturing to go with [...]

’90s House Hero Romanthony Reported Dead This weekend news surfaced that house DJ/producer Romanthony died on May 7 in Austin, Texas. Known for his '90s underground hits "Let Me Show You Love" and "The Wanderer," as well as fronting Daft Punk's "One More Time" and "Too Long," the cause of the artist's death has not been yet made public but was confirmed via his sister and several friends and collaborators on social media. With a unique style incorporaingd Prince's lyricism and Green Velvet's dance floor grooves, Romanthony was a unique and original voice in house music. He most recently featured on Kris Menace's [...]

The Crystal Method’s Scott Kirkland Recovering After Brain Surgery

The Crystal Method’s Scott Kirkland Recovering After Brain Surgery The Crystal Method's Scott Kirkland  (pictured right) has issued a statement revealing that he has undergone brain surgery, resulting in the delay or cancellation of the band's fifth album and tour dates. No tumor was found but doctors did find a benign posterior fossa arachnoid cyst. News of Kirkland's health scare comes after New York DJ/producer Peter Rauhofer succumbed to a brain tumor. “Many months ago I started experiencing short, but painful headaches. Thinking they were related to too many flights (or one too many flights of tequila), I didn’t think too much about it, [...]

Album Review: Tone of Arc / ‘The Time Was Right’ (No.19 Music)

Album Review: Tone of Arc / ‘The Time Was Right’ (No.19 Music) ★★★★☆ Derrick Boyd starts with some real rock 'n' roll with not-gone-to-bed-yet swagger. Doing the twangy dance/punk-funk/DIY disco thing that sticks up the dance floor, yet unafraid to grab a keyboard and ensure all eyes are on him as a synth evangelist, the transition from blasé, on-the-road icon to retuning the glam and chasing stardom/stars means timing really is everything. To make you buy into Boyd and Zoe Presnick’s vision, they impersonate a Parliament-style unit with less pizzazz (though the title track gets close) and more streetwise attitude posting freedom of spirit in its [...]

The Countdown Begins: Ultra Music Festival 2014 Confirmed

The Countdown Begins: Ultra Music Festival 2014 Confirmed It's not even Memorial Day, but the team behind Ultra Music Festival are hard at work, announcing this morning that Ultra Music Festival 2014 will take place March 28-30, 2014 in Miami. Following its successful 15-year celebration in 2013 that was spread out into two separate three-day celebrations that drew over 300,000 dance music fans to Bayfront Park, dates for the additional weekend are pending the approval of the City of Miami Commission and will be released if they become available. It's too soon for any announcements regarding UMF 162s lineup, but given UMF's track record [...]

Album Review: The Black Dog / ‘Tranklements’ (Dust Science)

Album Review: The Black Dog / ‘Tranklements’ (Dust Science) ★★★☆☆ The Black Dog mark their territory with an hour long warding off of intruders. For bark and bite, the veteran unit’s ambient techno, IDM and interstellar ordinance still doesn’t have to come at you in a blaze of teeth and slobber. The collection of astro bric-a-brac, as if to verify their whereabouts (and title), is intentionally charged with jolting the LP’s flow, but the unannounced changeability of sound does as good a job by itself anyway. "Atavistic Resurgence" grunts through electro with confrontation on its mind, representative of the sparse shunting together of [...]

Album Review: Classixx / ‘Hanging Gardens’ (Innovative Leisure)

Album Review: Classixx / ‘Hanging Gardens’ (Innovative Leisure) ★★★★☆ The photogenic sound of synth-surf LA brought to you by Michael David and Tyler Blake reaches a convergence point of '80s saturation — from under a rather prosaic moniker — and something you should live your life and be free by. Where "I’ll Get You" doesn’t make good on its cheery promise of ‘do you like bass?’, and "Long Lost" is either gorgeously dreamy or sickly sweet, the rushes of sunshine and neon in many ways fit the stereotype of bashing hexagon-shaped drum machines and keyboards manned by hair gel models. Far from [...]

On His Second Act Away From DJing, Trentemøller’s Remixes Himself

On His Second Act Away From DJing, Trentemøller’s Remixes Himself What do you do after you've attained most of your career goals before you're 40? If you're Danish DJ/producer Anders Trentemøller , you dream up new ones for yourself. From the mid '90s through the mid '00s, Trentemøller dominated global dance floors with his sound comprised of shards of minimal and tech-house, forging sinewy club tracks for labels such as Audiomatique, Tic Tac Toe and Poker Flat and presenting a cavalcade of superb remixes (the Knife, Röyksopp, Moby). He played all the right clubs and high-profile festivals and was enjoying a successful career that many mixers would [...]

Remembering Peter Rauhofer: A Testament to the American Dream

Remembering Peter Rauhofer: A Testament to the American Dream New York City-based Austrian DJ/producer Peter Rauhofer died on Tuesday, only a few weeks after he was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a brain tumor . The news was announced by Rauhofer's manager, Angelo Russo, via the artist's Facebook page. His passing at only 48 is tragic. I had the pleasure of interviewing Rauhofer early on in his career, just as Club 692s "Let Me Be Your Underwear" was morphing from underground European sensation into international club hit. Rauhofer was still living in Vienna, and I remember during our phone conversation [...]

Compilation Review: ‘Pukka Up X – A Decade of Dance’ (Pukka Up)

Compilation Review: ‘Pukka Up X – A Decade of Dance’ (Pukka Up) ★★★★☆ The ten-year anniversary of the Pukka Up imprint acts for the acceptable side of mainstream clubbing. Forget a backhanded compliment; it’s a gratifying boost to court tracks that have held their own to a widespread audience after working their way up from the underground or clubbing outskirts in a pleasingly natural advance. After ruling Ibiza waves and lighting up London — leading to a ten-party/country birthday jump-off — PU’s 24-track document will set barbeques a-sizzle, pouring plenty of recognizable arm-raisers into a funky sing-it-back punchbowl, served by a crew of get down-guarantors. Boarding [...]
