They say all good things come to an end, and then there's this blog. After 1200+ posts and almost four years, I've decided to discontinue Local Vertical as I just don't have the time anymore to give it the attention it deserves and requires. There's music from as far back as last November that I still haven't had time to get to, and with all the uncertainty and changes coming to NASA I need to stay focused on that and a few personal changes that are coming; thankfully I'll be at the space center until at least 2020. I honestly [...]

Okay, this Friday just got a hell of a lot better. One of the first of 300 or so emails I opened had some info on a New York City band called Sentient Machine. If you don't like screaming, pulsing, pounding, instrument-destroying industrial experimental rock come back tomorrow for more posts. However, if what I've described is exactly what you crave to satisfy that uncontrollable musical hunger this five-piece band is just what you need. It's a little Type O Negative, Nine Inch Nails, and Alice In Chains all wrapped into a supernova of sound and fury that is absolutely [...]
I commented last week was such a good week that come Friday I was farting daisies; this week, every day felt like Tuesday. It did rain a couple days, but rain doesn't bother me; I look at it as a free car wash. Stuart's radio broke in one of the bays; all it ever played was country music so I looked at that as nothing more than a mercy killing. We got word that the President is coming down next month to let us know what he plans to do with the program, but I'm totally underwhelmed by [...]

Endeavour on approach to docking with the International Space Station. Not sure if the crew was playing any of the tracks below, but data indicates it. We • The Society of Rockets from the new Future Factory EP Lift Off Cloud Controller • Watch Out For Rockets [...]
Since this is going to be held right down the road from us and since it is slated to start this Friday, we thought we'd give another mention of what promises to be a great three-day set of shows for a good cause. The Harvest of Hope Fest has announced the schedule lineup for their 2nd annual arts and music festival. Attendees will be treated to three days of music featuring over 200 bands including Broken Social Scene, Anti-Flag, Billy Bragg, Dr. Dog, Dead Prez, Senses Fail, Man Man, Kid Sister, the 22-piece indie-rock [...]
One of my favorite bands on this or any planet, Chicago's Apteka is putting together a 7" for their appearance at SXSW . If you aren't too familiar with the band, they are one of the premier rock/psychedelic bands and include some of the most pounding guitars you'll ever hear in their music. Bandmembers Dino, Jesse, Adam and Dave just continue to make something great sound even better. They've got tours and shows set through November (the schedule is on their MySpace page); if they are going to be near you, [...]

CraftLass might be doing more to help NASA than pretty much anyone these days...

If I knew this week would have gone as well as it did, I would have doctored the calendar to include a couple extra days and still have it include the gorgeous sunset shown. Hate to see the week end, but glad to see the weekend. Even with all the uncertainty and indecision at work-only 7,000 or so people are puckering over their jobs waiting for someone to make a decision-everything went well, everyone performed like all that mattered was getting the next ship ready for launch. What a terrific bunch of people at the Cape. This song [...]
Video compilation with music of the recent STS-130 mission. Damn, I am so going to miss working on these incredible spaceships...

This is Portland's Becca; just 20 years old, her music is mature beyond her years and the ferocity of her rock is unquestioned. She'll be at SXSW and during the spring she'll even appear at some local high schools. Her new album, Alive!!, will be available on March 2. Excellent. Kickin' & Screamin' Becca: Website • MySpace • Alive!! available for pre-order via [...]

Last night's great ending to a great mission, only four more shuttle flights left (maybe) until the end of the program (maybe) and on to other things (maybe). A couple more days and things should settle down for a bit at work and we'll get back to more extensive and frequent postings. The track is Sunday Driver by True Widow , part of the fantastic shoegaze, noise, punk, lo-fi, psyche, indie, electronica, ambient compilation called Jesus In Space, released by KilledRocketRecords [...]

As previously mentioned, the backlog of music has mutated into a folder of galactic proportions. All recently new music by some very talented (and patient) people. Not the worst way to spend 7+ hours! NEAR SIDE Fess Up Face Down • Blaine Fonda , from [...]

Jeezus, I don't know what the deal is. I've been in a major funk all week; even Monday's shuttle launch, as glorious and perfect as it was hardly registered on the excitement-meter. I don't know if I'm just tired, disinterested or pissed but this is totally out of character for me. Usually I don't let the flaming anuses (aka politicians) and their mindless psychobabble and uninformed decisions get to me, but since the Constellation program was neutered from the budget (it may still "fly"-some folks are going to fight it in congress) I guess the feeling of wasting four long [...]

Heading off to work for tomorrow morning's 4:39am launch of Endeavour and the STS-130 mission. It's the final night launch of a space shuttle and only four more of these in your manned United States space program, so try and catch the launch if you can. A bunch of readers and co-bloggers have emailed wanting to know how the cancellation of the Constellation program affects me personally and professionally and I appreciate the concern! I'll update everyone a few days after launch and the post-launch business but in short, I'll [...]

Well, I honestly had planned to spend much of the weekend posting as much of the payload of music patiently sitting in an unassuming folder on my desktop, but several things I needed to do took much more time than I had anticipated. Unfortunately, it's going to be another brief hiatus from posting until at least after next Sunday morning's planned launch of Shuttle Endeavour and a few days for post-launch business. Also, tomorrow will prove to be an interesting day as the budget will be released and we'll have [...]
