DOSVEC gives every other masher out there a run for their bitcoins. Again he's managed to piece together otherwise crappy music, Calvin Harris and Mylo, into something jubilant. Is it just me or does that Archie V in the background, "Magic Is Timeless," channel Avicii a bit? Anyway, this track is definitely a 5 in my book. Still bouncing to it 10 minutes after... Guest post by Arson Welles If you read my FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 2010 list, then you know that I have a huge soft spot for LA beatmaker Shlohmo: his full-length debut, Bad Vibes , is unquestionably one of the best (and most slept-on) records of 2011, full of subtle, percussive field recordings and delirious synthesizers. This week he announced a new EP, Vacation , with a release date in early February, and also shared that EP's first single, the muted, melancholy tick-tock of "wen uuu." If this is the direction Vacation is going [...]

T.I., in many ways, is the Gilbert Arenas of hip-hop. Both men began their careers as overlooked talents, with T.I. seeing his major label debut album flop and Gilbert being completely passed over in the first round of the NBA Draft. Through hard work and perseverance, however, both elevated themselves to the top of their respective years over the next few years (in fact, I’d still welcome an ’06-level T.I. or Gilbert Arenas as great addition to any hip-hop record or basketball team). But after nearly reaching “best in the world” status, both came crashing back down to Earth, mainly [...]

XXYYXX characterizes their latest release, "Closer," as "ghostwave." It's an apt description: this abstract, evocative track is a dreamscape, simple and seductive. It's more of a rough sketch than a fully realized vision - there isn't too much variation - but I can easily see this captivating me for more than ten consecutive minutes if the group decided to add in a few more variations (a spirited string quartet at the end would just sound perfect .) The Kap's back! Another rising mashup master, Kap Slap dropped his first track of the new year yesterday. Here he plucks the strong house beat from Hardwell's most popular track and jumbles it together with LMFAO and, uh, Far East Movement. "Sexy Jello" isn't Kap's finely layered achievement but suffices for a pump up song for the commute. Kap Slap - Sexy Jello (LMFAO x Tiesto x Hardwell) by Kap Slap

Electric Youth first got on everyone's radar with that song they did with College and it turns out that they know a thing or two about spinning. Their "Summer Never Ends Mix" features a lot of great and lesser known tracks, all pointing to the duo's love of 80s dance music. Electric Youth - Summer Never Ends Mix by Electric Youth (Official) And here are two recent EY tracks we totally missed. "Right Back To You" [...]

In my most recent review, of Raekwon’s Unexpected Victory , I called the Chef “probably the most gangsta rapper in the history of gangsta rap.” I still stand by that statement, but if we refine our focus from “history of gangsta rap” to “group of the ten most influential rappers in hip-hop today,” we can apply the statement to Rick Ross and throw the “probably” into the Atlantic Ocean strapped to a pair of concrete blocks. Rich Forever , the most significant hip-hop release of 2012 so far (sorry, T.I.), reaffirms Rozay’s status as the [...]

DJ duo The Knocks released a new EP a little while back, Magic . Featuring some old classics like "Dancing With The DJ" and "Brightside," as well as a couple new tracks, its songs - and their inevitable remixes - are sure to be found playing at a club near you. And with good reason. B-Roc and JPatt have put out some of the best dance music in the business over the past few years. And when you factor in their solo efforts and their non Knocks affiliated productions - B-Roc, for example, is a major player in his [...]

Simone Felice singing the sad? No way!! Here he goes on about stories of hardship and horror he finds in the mentioned rag. His Bright Eyes-esque wallowing is always a bit much but the swooshing production at the end of the track comes as a nice concluding divergence. At the end of the day, I could easily imagine this being on the OST for a Hollywood melodrama but never on my Droid. Simone Felice - New York Times by The Line Of Best Fit

Guest post by Arson Welles Remember that band that your friend was in for a couple years in early high school? They practiced in that guy’s garage every Thursday, and played at the school talent show a couple of times, and they were always talking about when they were going into the studio to record their demo and how they were booking a tour for spring break or maybe summer or maybe next year, and the guitar player (his name was either Kurt or Dustin, you can’t remember) had really long hair and [...]

Ok, this track totally does lift the beat from Avicii's "Levels" but I find "Iceberg" infinitely better mixed, better to dance to, just BETTER. Project 46 gives us the story behind this house-y track and how he unintentionally copied Avicii. The sweetness yet spookiness of the track and the heavenly crescendos make this a keeper. Project 46 - Iceberg (*Unoriginal* Mix) by Project 46

I didn't think it was possible to get much more hyperbolic about Azealia Banks than I was when I discovered "212." Then again, I clearly forgot about Kanye West. While DJing at 10AK on New Year's Eve in Las Vegas, West - excuse me, Yeezy World Peace - played "2123 and declared Ms. Banks to be "the future of music." There's even talk that she may be signed to West's label in the near future. As much as I loved Azealia's not inconsiderate talents on that song, I'm hesitant to put her on the same [...]

Raekwon is probably the most gangsta rapper in the history of gangsta rap. 2012 will mark his twentieth year of rap superstardom and as far as I can tell he’s still yet to make a song that doesn’t involve selling drugs, buying ridiculously extravagant things with the money he made selling drugs, or just being an all-around mafia don. So while the title of his new mixtape is Unexpected Victory , the tape is basically exactly what you’d expect from the Chef. Every track on Unexpected Victory is some sort of celebration [...]

XXYXX brings the world another ambient-leaning, slightly experimental track to add to our chillwave collection. He successfully strings the corrupted samples to be strangely melodic as a soft, glitchy lullaby. Enjoy dreaming in splintered landscapes. XXYYXX//I Don't Know Where I Am (But I Don't Mind) by xxyyxx

Teen Daze, aka Jameson, is a Canadian-based DJ who's been making music since 2008. Most of his more well-known tracks are disco, ambient, and electropop remixes, but he writes original songs as well. He recently released a multimedia EP, A Silent Planet , which was partially inspired by the eponymous CS Lewis science fiction novel. In his words : The six songs that appear on the EP are the result of many musical experiments, auditory accompaniments, and an attempt at a re-creation of Jamison’s experiences with this novel. In order to do [...]

Guest post by Arson Welles Avicii's been a hot name for almost a year now, releasing tracks under both his DJ moniker as well as his real name, Tim Berg. The Swedish producer's clever rework of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" made the internet circuit a few months before bootlegs of his real hit, "Levels," started showing up in clubs in Europe and the UK. Here Skrillex has taken that tune (which has become a staple of, among other things, my DJ sets of the last year) and crunched it into a half-time screamer. [...]

I had no idea Major Lazer did a NYE mix on BBC1 last night, otherwise I wouldn't brought the year in with that Justin Bieber/ Jaden Smith duet (jk). It's funky, at times sensual, heavy on the reggie fusion, twisted (Skrillex and Radiohead got in somehow??) and nice and longggggggg. What a great way for 2011 to go out. Jorge Ben was my first introduction to Brazilian music - someone put on his "best of" album The Definitive Collection so they could point out how much "Taj Mahal" sounded like Rod Stewart's hit "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" I'd never heard the Stewart song before, so when I did hear it for the first time later in my life I was astounded, much as Jorge Ben must have been in 1978, at the similarities. A judge eventually ruled that the song did, in fact, constitute plagiarism, as it had, in the judge's words, "been derived" from Jorge [...]

Young Jeezy’s road to releasing Thug Motivation 103: Hustlerz Ambition would make J. Cole blush. Jeezy announced the album way back in 2009, and then proceeded to name and then miss like six release dates. To put the delay in perspective, Jeezy was yelling out “it’s that TM103 shit” on his collaboration with Jay-Z on The Blueprint 3 , released in September 2009. Since that time, Jay found time to sell out a bunch of stadiums, record and release Watch The Throne , and even impregnate Beyonce. What has Jeezy done in the same [...]
