Baton Rouge indie-electro ravers Prom Date have had no problem practically embedding themselves in the New Orleans musical landscape. Since first beginning to pop up just over a year ago, their steadily growing number of performances down here has reached a point where the apt question on any given night has become, "Isn't Prom Date playing this week?" And the band's presence is certainly welcome. For as many budding indie electronic artists as we now host, few acts outside of the inimitable Jean-Eric are capable of matching Prom Date's gusto-soaked, sweaty live energy. Their performances - usually more akin to [...]

Slumberland, 2012 Frankie Rose , who the heavens do you think you are? Admirably, though stupidly, averse to the gravy train, you quit the Crystal Stilts and you abandoned the Girls Dum Dum and Vivian to record one of the best thin-air albums of 2010, Frankie Rose and the Outs . You then offered the only decent cover track, that of “Soma” , on the Strokes tribute record , only to claim about-face that you’ve never even really listened to the band, which everyone knows is a lie - you being [...]
In the last six months, no local venue has made a larger effort to break into a higher echelon of rock club status than hidden-in-plain-sight Garden District standby Cafe Prytania . More frequent, consistent and eclectic booking in the back half of 2011 slowly but surely elevated the humble establishment from occasional Loyola-band hotspot to a dependable destination to catch up-and-coming local, regional and even nationally touring talent. The only downside to Cafe P's rising profile was the unfortunate way the larger, more frenzied crowds brought the shortcomings of the bar's unusual layout into sharper focus, as [...]
Dammit. How long did it take y’all to figure out that I misspelled Mannie Fresh’s name on the cover of last month’s issue? Probably a lot less time than it did for me, when glancing over my shoulder at the stacks of issues in my van (and days into our distribution) did it occur to me that there might not actually be any “y” in Mannie. I’ve felt pretty bone-headed about that epic eff-up since. Really bush league stuff and a crash-and-burn way to end the year. I feel like Brett Favre at the end of the NFC Championship two [...]

Just as the NFL Draft, with all the pomp and circumstance that surround it, is considered by some to be America's fourth major professional sport, the first few months of every year find the coming Festival Season's numerous events unveiled in quick succession, a noteworthy and exciting music-centric stretch in its own right. Rumors abound, travel plans are made, and sometimes vitriolic meditations on the Current And Future State Of Music™ are hard to avoid. But sardined among reliably controversial announcements from Hangout Music Festival , Jazz Fest, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo and Coachella is the one press release that is [...]

02.09: Sphynx + Noir Fonce + Rhodes - Siberia 02.10: Yob + Thou - The Big Top Anyone who has been to even a handful of underground or DIY concerts in New Orleans over the last couple of years is probably at least casually aware of the astounding creative talent that continues to bubble under its surface while going anomalously unrecognized by much of the outside world. For most, that "Us Against Them" narrative is and always has been this city's defining characteristic. But within a steadily rising [...]
Without a doubt, the Hangout Music Fest was the suprise success of 2011. For only it's second year in existence, concertgoers from all over the country swarmed the Alabama coast town of Gulf Shores - essentially a first for the entire gulf coast region. In retrospect, though, the refreshing swell of alternative vacationers couldn't have been much of a surprise: even if they hadn't been treated to as peerless a lineup as entire festival circuit that year offered (which they certainly were), no one should be able to resist the thrill of experiencing any live concert set to a backdrop [...]

DFA Records, 2012 Prinzhorn Dance School 's self-titled debut was one of those rare records that genuinely, and successfully, escaped critical dissection. Definable or vaguely describable, sure: it was minimalist, nostalgic post punk. But it defied nuanced explanations of potential importance or relevancy in the zeitgeist of 2007. Similar to MGMT's Congratulations , Prinzhorn Dance School seemed to elude any substantive analysis beyond "It's different, and I like it" or "It's different, and I don't like it". However, as a band, drummer/guitarist Tobin Prinz and drummer/bassist Suzi Horn weren't copping out, [...]
02.02: Native America + Netherfriends + Pals - CIRCLE BAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! During it's yearlong absence, the New Orleans music scene did pretty well for itself without Circle Bar around. Shows that probably should have (and technically would have) gone down at Circle Bar found a variety of alternative homes to varying but mostly admirable levels of success. The Blue Nile Balcony Room, AllWays Lounge, Howlin' Wolf Den, Hi-Ho Lounge, The Saint and many others picked up huge amounts of slack; so much so that for certain strenuous stretches of the year, when the live [...]

In only three short years, the annual Hogs For The Cause has grown from a leisurely afternoon pig-roast-cum-charity event to not just a fundraising powerhouse and massive BBQ Competition, but also a noteworthy addition to Festival Season: Local Edition. What started as the quaint brain-child of local dining impresarios Rene Louarpe and Becker Hall - minds responsible for, among many other New Orleans culinary achievements, quintessential foodie blog Blackened Out as well as short-lived but immensely loved pop-up burger experiment MVB - has expanded its scope and footprint every year, but the 2011 edition truly brought Hogs [...]

A good bit of natural uncertainty seems to surround new local trio Habitat, who for a time only played intermittently between each member's full-time band schedule and who have yet to formally record even one original song for public consumption. Through most interpretations, the band is nothing more than a side project: guitarist Andrew Landry and drummer Evan Cvitanovich, better known as noise punk duo High In One Eye, have noticeably been lending their talents as near-bit players in acts like Glish and the now-defunct Country Club. However, with Country Club's recent break-up freeing up the creative juices of singer [...]
