Blog: San Diego Serenade

Feedback from the Reader

The next issue of the Reader has come out, and it published no less than six letters to the editor regarding my Cover Story . It was obviously a divisive article, and thanks to their comments, several San Diego residents have earned themselves a spot on my Richard Nixon style enemies list. Brian "Absolutely horrible...what a moron" Nelson, Shannon "how much of an idiot your writer is" Riccio and Mariah "monotonous and dragging" Burzynski, welcome to the club! I think it's really great that the San Diego Reader is willing to print [...]

Check Out The Reader

Check Out The Reader Monday I got an email from the folks at the Reader asking if I was aware that my 91X and 949 diaries were going to be used as the cover story for this weeks issue. I was unaware, but very excited nonetheless. When you put stuff out there on the internet, you can say whatever you want, but realize that your readership is limited to people who come to or google your site. When you put stuff in print, you have a much greater readership, but often have to limit what you say based on [...]

Guest Blogging is Fun

Guest Blogging is Fun Guest blogging is fun. I've done it twice now. What I think is funny about the process is that it only a stranger or a more distant acquaintance would be willing to hand over the reins of their blog to me carte blanche, anybody who actually knows me would never trust me to do that. The most recent person to put me in full on "God-it's-so-difficult-not-to- post-lemon-party" mode is Ryan from Muzzle of Bees . He is canyoneering off in the wild west somewhere, so I get to write whatever I want on his [...]

Bo Bo Jo Jamaican Albino Podcast - Episode #3 - "Dream Bands"

Tom Waits - Jockey Full of Bourbon (Warsaw 2000)
Episode 3 of the Bo Bo Jo Jamaican Albino Podcast find Andrew and I assembling our "Dream Band" one musician at a time. It's the kind of debate where points are made vehemently and argued without a single shred of rational evidence. The kind of hypothetical discussion that could end friendships under the right circumstances. Normally these kind of conversations take place in bars, late at night, and end with someone storming out of the room, but the friendly confines of the Podcast seem to be an adequate alternative arena for it to take place. [...]

Free 50 On Their Heels & Grand Ole Party Tickets!

Free 50 On Their Heels & Grand Ole Party Tickets! 50 On Their Heels Singer/Guitarist Junior Metro at the Sports Club Like a storm rolling away, the clouds of cover and tribute bands have parted leaving only the bright, bright sunshine of some of San Diego's best local bands. Fifty On Their Heels and Grand Ole Party play Wednesday night, fresh off a shared gig a week or so back at the Sports Club. Canes bartenders likely have little going for them in the way of personality, but their is NO FEASIBLE WAY on Earth that they could be more obnoxious [...]

A fortunate afterthought...

Tool Street Scene 2006 Opening & Stinkfist
We have received confirmation that Joe Callahan's shades were not injured in the unpleasantness during Tool's Set at the Street Scene. For full coverage, check out Cat Dirt, who has rounded up tons of info about the festival.

More Street Scene Blowage

I feel kind of like a curmudgeon every time I post something like the Street Scene/Lollapalooza comparison, so I promise I'll post some positive things later this week about some great San Diego bands. But for now, it's nice to see that many of my points are being echoed in the Union Tribune and the CityBeat of all places. Thanks to Cat Dirt for alerting me to the CityBeat's cover story , which reprints editor Troy Johnson's myspace comments regarding the fest. Most people focus on the lineup suckitude and the unjustifiably [...]

Tom Sauer - One Lame Dude

Seal Harassment at Casa Beach - La Jolla
I got a comment on my Springsteen, Seals and Shit article from a few months ago from the folks at sealwatch.org , which caused me to investigate what had been up recently with the seal situation down in La Jolla. Sealwatch linked to the below video of some dick harassing the seals, provided by the La Jolla Friends of the Seals : It's pretty much a 50 year old petulant child [...]

The Street Scene Blows

The Street Scene Blows Two and a half months ago, I was trying to figure out any advance information about the then-unrevealed Street Scene lineup. While speculating that a performance by a reunited Replacements, fresh off their two newly recorded tracks, might be an event worth getting excited about, I got called "retarded" and "a joke" by this guy: Would you rather be a joke or a douchebag? Street Scene organizer Joe Callahan . I'll be honest, the insults [...]

Bo Bo Jo Jamaican Albino Podcast - Episode #2

Bo Bo Jo Jamaican Albino Podcast - Episode #2 After a brief delay caused by overtime working and all day sleeping, we're back with Episode 2 of our newly renamed Bo Bo Jo Jamaican Albino Podcast! You'll have to listen to the podcast to understand what that name means, but rest assure that this second episode packs all the punch of say a Godfather Part II, and none of the dogshit of an Attack of the Clones. This episode includes: -Mashups Galore! -Conor Getting Paid! -Two versions of the same song! -Andrew's opinion on the best songwriter around today! [...]

The Zen of Road House

Mike Nelson Goes to Work at Legend Films - Part 2
If you're wondering why posting has been rather limited on here the past few weeks, there are all sorts of answers I could give you, but in all honesty, it's probably been because I've been watching Road House over and over and over again. The 1989 Patrick Sawyze flick about a bouncer with a NYU degree in philosophy is the first movie for a new project we've been working on at work called RiffTrax , where Mike Nelson provides a MST3K style commentary (riffing) on a movie as a downloadable MP3. So you play the [...]

No Limit Artists No Longer Out Of Work

No Limit Artists No Longer Out Of Work In case you were worried that the talentless photoshop hacks responsible for photoshopping the weekly dose of No Limit Records cover art (including such gems as the above Mercedes- Rear End) back in the late 90s was out of work and destitute, I present to you evidence that they are still hard at work in the music industry in the form of the cover for Bob Dylan's "Modern Times" due out at the end of August. And, much more amazingly, in the "Check it yourself to [...]

Guest Blogging

I was asked to guest blog at The Bubble Death , a music blog based in San Diego. I don't know the protocol about such an endeavor, and was tempted to just shamelessly post Re-Ree songs, but instead I dug deep into my collection and posted a kick ass song by a kick ass band. So go here to check out what I picked.

San Diego Serenade - The Podcast - #1

San Diego Serenade - The Podcast - #1 It's been a bit quiet around here since the holidays, but I haven't been completely lazy. I've been toying with the idea of doing a podcast ever since I first heard the effortless brilliance of The Ricky Gervais Show a few weeks ago, and finally got the resources together to do it. So I'm proud to present the first edition of San Diego Serenade - The Podcast . Joining me on hosting duties is my friend Andrew Kilpatrick, who besides doing a savage job on the "Con" side of the first San Diego Serenade CDebate, is [...]

Guess The Attendance At The Casbah

Going to check out Jolie Holland at the Casbah tonight, and wondering what the attendance will be like for this show. Based on the Sound Team turnout from two weeks ago, where there were more tumbleweeds rolling through the place than actual people, you realize that just having some buzz on the internet isn't enough to make people flock to the show. The only show I'd ever seen less people at at the Casbah was Marah. Both shows had the effect of making you wonder if you had made some sort of mistake, if there [...]

Free Radiohead

Radiohead's popularity continues to amaze me. After the show they put on last night, which was split about evenly between great guitar heavy performances, crazy songs where samples were recorded and looped live on the spot, and new songs which sounded a bit in the middle, I found myself thinking that Radiohead is the kind of band that 99 times out of 100 will be confined to a fate of shows like Arrested Development, movies like Cinderella Man or bands like Spoon, ie "The best show/movie/band that nobody is watching/listening to." The strangest thing about Radiohead is that [...]

Some Guy Linked To My Image...

This was too funny not to share. Through Technorati , I found out that someone was linking to one of my images, of San Diego band Alta Voz. It was this blog, Mars vs. the Volcano . Well I decided to have some fun and do the ol' image replacement prank. It wasn't til after I was done that I noticed how ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY the image fit with the caption he had written about it. Note: This is not safe for work. The image I replaced it with is [...]
