It's hard to know if today can get any more based now that we've seen Lil B cry real tears, but we may as well stay in that zone with a beat tape courtesy of the Based God's go-to producer Keyboard Kid 206. Read more »

I Am Kloot's last album Sky at Night was a critical hit – not only did it garner great reviews but it also chalked up a Mercury nomination. The folkie Mancunians have been lurking on the fringes of fame for more than a decade, but in many ways Let It All In seems like their first release that merits the words "eagerly anticipated". Produced by Elbow's Guy Garvey and Craig Potter, it showcases once more the dark and twisted songwriting of frontman John Bramwell. Mouth on Me is the perfect example of the Kloot doing what they [...]

Although Lucky & Wild is a new band, songwriting and performing is nothing new for the young artists. Drew Grethel, Sean Sobash, and Ed Larsen grew up as neighbors in a small beach town outside of San Diego performing music in a vast array of projects. Lucky & Wild represents over a decade of Drew, Sean, and Ed’s undying friendship, through the thick and the thin of growing up, L&W is the culmination of their past, and soon to be present. Widowspeak is a fount of familiar sounds, from early-'90s shoegazer rock to twangily portentous Western soundtracks to the languidly soft pop of Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval. But the music possesses a dreamy pop sound of its own. Widowspeak's new album, Almanac, comes out Jan. 22. Read more »

An album of doo-wop covers, My True Story is painstakingly engineered to transcend trends. It's not trying to make its source material sound contemporary so much as dislodge it from its time capsule and free it to drift across eras. Aaron Neville's My True Story comes out on Jan. 22. Read more »

Rockers release previously unused songs from 2005 sessions Back when they were recording their 2005 LP, Waiting for the Sirens' Call, post-punk torchbearers New Order ended up with a handful of extra songs. They will finally see release on January 15th on Rhino. The unused tracks from the sessions were written and recorded before the departure of original bassist Peter Hook and appear completely intact. Here you can take an exclusive first listen to Lost Sirens, which features no shortage of lovelorn yet wholly danceable cuts, such as opener "I'll Stay With [...]

Since 2006, it’s felt like production duo Blue Sky Black Death has been looking for a voice for their instrumentals. In addition to releasing mostly vocal-free albums filled with lush epics that sounded like they were soundtracking every fantasy movie ever made, they also dragged semi-forgotten rappers back into the music world—first with the abstract Wu-Tang affiliate Holocaust, later with another Wu-Tang outlier Hell Razah and underground mainstay Jean Grae. Comadre is a screamo band from Redwood City, a suburb of San Francisco, California, composed of former members of Heartcrosslove, One's Own Ruin, What Life Makes Us, and Light This City. Their sound is a shoot-off of emotive hardcore and punk, played fast and chaotic with an abundance of energy, but with a large focus on melody and tunefulness as well. Their influences can perhaps best be shown by the covers the band has performed live, by groups such as Rites of Spring, Refused, Kid Dynamite, and Suicide File. Read more »
