One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - I encountered Grizfolk the first time around four or five months ago. I'm not sure where exactly I stumbled on them, but they've definitely received a bit of coverage. Formerly Griz Adams, they've changed their name to Grizfolk (trademark reasons, I wonder?) and have [...]
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - Bird Call's "Phantom Limbs" was a pretty sweet track that dropped a while back. They decided to release an EP with some remixes of the track, plus another new cut ("When The Fires Roam") next month. One of those remixes is done by Chicago [...]
Face Off features two top ten tracks from the Hype Machine charts – both unknown and unheard by myself. Did I mention these tracks are selected specifically because they encompass genres that I am ignorant of, or generally avoid? Well, there’s that too. Face Off is meant to be a fun interlude in the seriousness of music blogging…if blogging can be called serious, which it cannot. I tackle songs I would never give a second thought, or delve into genres where I’d be better off sticking my own foot in my mouth than try [...]
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - Wealthy Ghost (Pete Kostrivas) was under the weather last weekend. Apparently when he's dog tired and sick to death, he makes music for his upcoming album. This is slated to be the bonus track on the upcoming Good Luck . Check out "Still Alive" [...]
It's no secret that Seatraffic are one of my favorite discoveries since beginning Sirens in 2010. Their brand of indie pop electronics is as charming as the day is long, and their most recent release "Tempo of Regret" was no exception. I feel like I'm committing a small degree of blasphemy by saying this, but Moodive's remix is actually better than the original. The mix showcases clearer vocals from Seatraffic (I finally know the words!), along with their signature Northwest rain-fueled sound, but the addition of Moodive's surprising electronics (plus those 8-bit Nintendo sounds in the [...]
Minneapolis product Chicane Theory dropped Things Look Up Again on May 7th, and I thought I'd throw up the stream to whet your appetite. Featuring lead singles "Happily After" (" rips right into your ears with a very memorable riff (the proverbial “meat”), followed up nicely by the “potatoes” of the project, Roesler’s vocals...") and "Corridor" , Things Look Up Again is a more traditional form of alternative rock than you're used to hearing around these parts. That's not to say it's unremarkable; on the contrary, it's quite so. Chicane Theory's sound is very palatable; excellent [...]
It hasn't even been a month since I was last in Knoxville, yet sometimes there's no place quite like home. Yung Life are also from Knoxville and I hadn't heard from them since their self-titled LP dropped last summer. It's always good to hear from home. Yung Life dropped off "Solarbeats" in the inbox this morning, fresh off the presses and brimming with enthusiastic sounds. "Solarbeats" is a downhill roller - once it gets started it gallups, with rolling drums, keys and guitars all a-kilter, breaknecking to it's conclusion with tongue planted firmly in cheek. This track is [...]
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - Speedy Ortiz's "Hexxy" is the B-side to their Ka-Prow/Hexxy 73 out a few days ago on Inflated Records .
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - Speak, those Austin rascals who recently popped onto your radar with "Peaks", decided it'd be awesome to release an EP of female fronted/female vocalist covers. It is pretty awesome, no lie. They took on "Little Man" by Little Dragon, which was quite [...]
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - Magic Man signed on with Neon Gold/Columbia Records and immediately dropped a free three track EP, featuring old favorites "Paris" and "Texas". That's great for them, but what about the rest of us, you say? Oh, they also threw in brand new track "Nova [...]
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - Another great track courtesy of Yours Truly; Nosaj Thing and Chance The Rapper got together to pound out "Paranoia" and throw it in as the bonus track behind "Pusha Man" on Chance's new mixtape Acid Rap . It's a great hip-hop track, personifying [...]
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - Cosmo Sheldrake is something of a maniacal genius. I don't know what in the world his tracks are about, what the hell he is saying, or even how to describe them...yet somehow they are innately catchy, and eccentric stylings aside they are crafted with [...]
Red Lights . Revamped and re-energized. Red Lights is a segment where I can quickly run through the tracks remixes that caught my ear but didn’t quite catch my tongue…Red Lights to make you slow, stop, and listen. -
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - Not a whole lot to say on this one, just a good little folk tune. It's a clever play on the OK Corral trope, and T. Hardy Morris' first album Audition Tapes will be out on July 30th.
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - These Chainsmoker dudes released a pretty neat remix of Daughter's "Medicine" - coincidentally one of the very few remixes that I had wrote about up to that point. Now they are remixing Phoenix and "Trying To Be Cool", throwing in some bleeps and blips, [...]
I was just a sip away from naming this my song of the week. I'm not sure why I didn't to be honest with you. Maybe because it's early in the week, maybe because I get antsy when faced with a variety of choices. Regardless of the reasoning, I have no doubt that you are going to love "Lobby Music (feat. K. Raydio)". Once your ears get attuned to the slow, steady roll of Psymun's production you'll certainly be square on the reasoning behind the song title. Then K. Raydio's (Krysta Radford) voice will kick in and [...]
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - "Emmanuelle" is that enchanting bit of pop that the world seems to have forgotten. Gorgeous strings, a stately rhythm, and some of the most wonderfully suited vocals I could imagine are just a few of the high points of this track by Prudence Rees-Lee. [...]
New Professor Music reposted this Yoya song on their Soundcloud profile, otherwise I might not have encountered Yoya's filthy rich songwriting. "I'll Be The Fire" is described as the contrast between the destructive power of the wildfires in California (in particular, during the Station Fire in 2009), and the constructive power of two people learning to trust each other. "I'll Be The Fire" is the aftermath of that scorched Earth, soft fertile soil primed to flourish and rise again. Not coincidentally, it's my third anniversary with my wife today and I felt this was a very [...]
One Timers are quick hits to keep your ears fresh throughout the day. Get down with these tracks, sans a bunch of words clogging up your brain. Wondering what a real one timer is? Watch this . Hint: He shoots, he scores! - Received this track by Huntronik the other day and have thoroughly loved it's minimalistic funk (also, "Baldy"). Described as a power-psych trio, the Brooklyn group appeared earlier this year and have already dropped a self-titled album. Talk about moving fast. The couple of tracks [...]
Pulse quickening and empowering, Christopher Paul Stelling's "Brick x Brick" is the epitome of the sounds of my childhood set to the grit of a grown man's pain. This is the music they play on the porches and decks of the Appalachians, at least, a version of it. Mr. Stelling brings his own unique attribute; he takes into the chip on the shoulder found on many a mining man. On "Brick x Brick", Stelling sounds like a man barely holding it together, with his guitar alight and fingertips bleeding, passionate and preparing for a fight. I'm wholly unfamiliar [...]
