The Rifles - No Love Lost

The Rifles - No Love Lost This year just keeps getting better and better. It seems like every week there's another fantastic new band with another brilliant debut album. I mean so far this year we have had moments of pure perfection from The Longcut and had our ears burned off by Be Your Own Pet to name but two and long may it continue. This week it's the turn of The Rifles who released their latest single "She's Got Standards" a couple of weeks ago and you can hear it on this weeks Burning World program below. The single comes in lovely pink vinyl and [...]

The Fall - 30th Aniversary

The Fall - 30th Aniversary There can be very few bands who can claim to have been active for no less than thirty years and still sound as fresh as the day they were born. In fact the only one I can think of is The Fall. Perhaps it's got something to do with the fact that Mark E. Smith seems to sack band members as one of his favorite pastimes, or perhaps it's more to do with the fact that Smith is a complete one off. Over the last three decades he has stubbornly refused to follow trends or sell out to the powers [...]

Burning World #10

3Hostwomexicansandatinofspanne rs win the award for band name of the week. They've just released their debut album "Pegasus Bridge" through Noisestar records and it is spectacular. The one thing which comes through about this bunch of lads is that really don't give a shit about anything other than having a laugh and making some quite angry noises. At times they remind me of the Happy Flowers who releasedsome pretty good stuff on Homestead Records some years ago. Check out the MP3's on their website HERE . Another release to look out for this week is the new [...]

Burning World #9

I think it's fair to say that this is probably the best Burning World program thus far. The fact of the matter is that there is so much good music around at the moment you and you don't have to look very hard to find it. I just wish more people could be bothered because only then will we rid the world of the dirge which makes up ninety percent of the commercial charts. Anyway of particular note

Burning World #8

Burning World #8 At last summer seems to have arrived. The sun is shining and the sky is blue and the postman is walking down the street with hopefully one or two records in his bag for me....Oh well maybe tomorrow. Looks like rain now. It's only June but already this has been one of the best years for music I can remember. There have been so many exiting new bands all trying to do something a bit different an long may it continue. Bishop Allen are one such band. They come from Brooklyn, New York and have had [...]

Burning World #7

Burning World #7 You cannot imagine my pleasure at finding a new EP by the brilliant "Be Your Own Pet". The EP is called Summer Sensation". I don't know whether or not it's avaliable in the UK but it's certainly worth tracking down a copy on import if possible. Be Your Own Pet was without doubt my favorite LP of the year so far....until this week. The debut album by The Longcut will hit the shops on 12th June and is an essential purchase. People will make comparisons to Joy Division and various other old bands but this band from Manchester [...]

Burning World #6

Burning World #6 The long awaited new single from Camera Obscura hits the shops this week. "Lloyd I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken" is another perfect pop gem from the Camera's and their new album "Let's Get Out Of This Country" will be released in early June. I'll play a track from it on the podcast next week. Another release of note this week is a compilation on Northern Star Records called Psychedelica Volume One. Not the most catchy name for a record granted but this is definitely the best comp I've heard so far this year. The [...]

Burning World #5

Burning World #5 Some fantastic records this week and no mistake. Pick of the bunch this week has to be the new album from Finland's "Echo Is Your Love" who have just released their third album this very week on Run Out Records and you could do a lot worse than tracking down a copy. Enjoy. Burning World #5 Be Your Own Pet - Bunk Trunk Skunk (XL) [...]

Slowdive - Pygmalion Era Demos

Slowdive - Pygmalion Era Demos This is a bootleg which I've just happened to stumble across the other day. It's basically a collection of demo's from the mighty Slowdive which were recorded in 1995, the same year as they released their final album "Pygmalion". Although personally I prefere the earlier Slowdive material circa "Catch The Breeze" etc this is a fine record. At the time I wasn't entirely convinced about Pygmalion but these demos prove beyond all reasonable doubt that although perhaps past the peak of their powers Slowdive were still a band to be reckoned with in 1994. [...]

Two Gallants - Live In Brussels

Two Gallants - Live In Brussels Now and again when I go record shopping I like to do some kind of random purchase. It could be anything which looks vaguely interesting really but last week it was the latest album from Two Gallants. Although I'd seen their name splashed around in the music press their music I'd never heard. Two Gallants are a duo consisting of Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel. Their debut album "The Throes" was released on Alive records last year but I think the one to buy is the latest offering "What The Toll Tells". The first track "Las Cruces Jail" is worthy [...]

Burning World #4

Not a bad selection of music at all this week. The highlight of the week for me is the new album by Shooting At Unarmed Men which I only heard for the first time about an hour before I recorded this program. It's quite strange how one record can brighten up your whole week. Just the pick me up I needed after Cambridge United's victory over the ever luckless York City which just about ends our play-off hopes for another year. Anyway apart from that the new records from Two Gallants, Semifinalists and The Maccabees should all be on your [...]

Burning World #3

This weeks program is pretty hot, if I do say so myself. Exellent new singles by the likes of Neils Children, Les Incompetents & Voxtrot and a brand new track by the mighty Fall recorded live in Greece just a couple of weeks ago. In fact the only downside to this program is the fact that I'm on it.... oh well, you can't have everything. Burning World #3 Les Incompetents - How It All Went Wrong (White Heat) Wilderness - Fever Pitch (JagJaguar) Voxtrot - Rise Up In The Dirt (Cult Hero) [...]

Burning World #2

Here it is then, the second in the series of Burning World programs. I think it's fair to say that there's some pretty good stuff in this one including the new Bromheads Jacket record and an exerpt from a bootleg I've just come across wich is a recording of one of Mark E Smith's spoken word gigs in America from 2001. He even has a go at telling a joke, hilarious. Burning World #2 Milburn - 17 (Mercury) The Seconds - Sister [...]

Burning World #1

This is a the first in a series of shows I'm putting together to showcase as much new music as possible. At the moment there are so many new bands around doing some fantasic things and deserve to have their music heard by as wide an audience as possible. Hope you like what you hear. Burning World #1 Be Your Own Pet - Wildcat (XL) The Holloways - Generator (Demo) Good Shoes - We Are Not The Same (Brille) [...]

Little Man Tate

I've just listened to the new Little Man Tate single and I think it's pretty safe to call them Sheffield's finest. I really hope that they can use the current buzz which is around Sheffield to catapult themselves towards some kind of success because this band deserve it. As far as the sinle is concerned...well it's called "The Agent" and it's fine, but the real treat on this release is a catchy little number entitled "Just Can't Take It". It's worth a purchase just for that. These are a couple of new demo's from the bands website. [...]

The Grates

The Grates come from Brisbane, Australia. They consist of Patience (Vocals), Alana (Drums) and John (Guitar). Apparently they've released loads of stuff in their native Australia leaving us here in the UK rather neglected. However, do not despair because the band are now signed to the Captains Of Industry label and have released a four track ep called "Ouch, The Touch"which is quite simply sublime. They remind me a little bit of Deerhoof but perhaps not quite as extreme. Hopefully The Grates will return to the UK for some live dates in the near future. [...]
