been following these chaps on twitter for seemingly years now, and have never seen them, for whatever reason. anyway, tonight, hopefully that all will change. new orleans' the breton sound is who i am talking about if you havent figured that out. they recently released a new ep entitled maps, and its great. admittedly, even though we were "friends" on twitter, i had never actually heard em. one thing i love about em is that there is something decidedly 902s about em, which of course is my favorite era in music. this is not early 902s [...]

you ever run into a band, that seemingly everything they put out, hits you in just the right spots? yeah, thats me and hallelujah the hills . they just put out a odds and sods double record that is made up of b-sides, non album tracks, etc and god damn if it aint better than most bands/artisits real records. it's entitled portrait of the artist as a young trashcan , and i cant recommend it enough, if you havent figured that out. they are one of those bands that sure they're shit is catchy, quirky, etc, but there [...]

photo by me top of the monday evening! trying to get back into this blogging thing, but admittedly its been tough. then again, for the past year or so i have been going in spurts, which i guess is better than nothing esp after almost 8 years of doing this. anyway, so my boys centro-matic are in the studio recording a new record which has a working title of take pride in your long odds . seems mildly fitting for the band, who i think is one of, if not the best bands playing [...]

top of the day, fools! the past week has been kind of weird, thus the silence. my grandma, who wasnt in the best of health, but still alive and kicking, passed away last week. so, in her honour, here is the clash bootleg rat patrol from fort bragg . she was a huge clash fan, in fact she was at the show when the iconic photo for london calling was shot. thats a lie, but sounds cool. that picture was from the last time i saw her, which was sadly 2 years ago at my brothers wedding. [...]
oh dear lord. i could not be more excited about this. for those that dont know, they put out one of my favorite records ever, nothing is okay , back in 08 - i think that was the year. anyway, they put it out, played some shows, then for whatever reason, broke up. its an absolutely heartbreakingly gorgeous record that i still listen to on a weekly basis. i cannot, i repeat, cannot recommend it enough. keep in mind, the two singers sam and jill were probably dating/breaking up during the making of this, not to start any rumours [...]
sup, peoples? i had a request for a repost on this whigs show which like the title suggests was in milan and took place at the zimba escape club on 1.30.94. enjoy... 1. if i were going 2. debonair 3. turn on the water 4. gentlemen 5. be sweet 6. my world is empty without you 7. when we two parted 8. retarded [...]

i dont talk too much about punk bands, mostly due to the fact that i never get sent anything from said genre nor do i ever really seek it out. during my late teens - late 202s i listened to quite a bit of punk. so its in my bloodstream, just as is 902s r&b, and oddly enough barry manilow, but thats whole other story for another time. hailing from portland, maine is dead trend who are releasing their first full length record on may 7 entitled false positive . the record is made up of 21 songs and [...]

couple weeks ago, bj barhman, american aquarium, mentioned on facebook a guy by the name of john moreland - he's from tulsa, ok, btw. having never heard of him, i made a mental not to check him out, and of course over the next few days leading up to checking him out, i saw his name popping up seemingly everywhere. seeing that as a sign, i made it a priority. after listening to two of his records, everything the hardway and earthbound blues , i can now see why a ton of folks are talking about [...]

howdy, hi! not much today, other than this gbv comp which i posted a couple years back, but had a couple of requests for a repost. if i have something, i am always happy to oblige. its lily's, my daughter, birthday today - she's 5. so going to be getting into some serious birthday shit. well, as much shit as you can with a 5 year old. i originally got this from the gbv database , which is an unbelievable resource for hardcore or even passing gbv fans. this is just a snippet of the broadcaster house [...]

if i have one running theme its the "oh shit, i didnt realize (insert whatever here.) this has been happening for the 7.5 years this site has been in existence. i have a hard time keeping track and putting two and two together. such is the case with north carolina musician jeremy squires . i have followed him on twitter for a while, and he was also a part of couch by couchwest, but i am just now listening to his stuff. he's got a new record/ep out entitled central nervous station , which i am [...]

photo by noah w. bailey for dallas observer happy, monday folks! so here is a lovely recording of one of my favorite chicago bands ever, red red meat, and here they are playing like the title suggests at the hideout in chicago. its a soundboard, and thanks to the original taper! you can buy red red meat stuff via subpop and cant recommend em enough particularly jimmywine majestic . 1. red red meat by thax douglas 2. chinese balls 3. [...]
jay admittedly, i love this record. i am just as surprised as you may be that that just came out of my mouth, but really its a damn fine record. The post it came from the youtubes: early sunday morning edition appeared first on Captains Dead .

time to take a break from all this madness. here we have a song off deadstring brothers recently released bloodshot record, cannery row . i have had this record on my harddrive for the past couple weeks, and as per usual, i am just getting around to listening to it. few songs in, i am absolutely loving it. this appears to be maybe their 4th record. if youre a fan of early ryan adams, more bluesy stones stuff, etc you should absolutely dig this. anyone around these parts a fan, and is his other stuff as good? [...]

i dont know much about aly tadros and her song featuring ben balmer, "whim," but apparently it was inspired by streaking and alcohol. if you knew me way back when, i was known to streak through parties on a whim - no pun intended. in fact i wouldnt run through a house, or a backyard party, no, i would be naked, beer in hand and act like nothing was amiss. so, this is a song i could get behind just by the description alone. as it turns out, i like it a lot. ben has a great voice, [...]

new orleans artist john michael rouchell, who you may know better as the main man behind my name is john michael, has a new ep coming out on april 27 entitled the seperation ep . i loved his work with his previous band, and i dont see that love stopping with this solo work. oh, and he's releasing two more ep's this year under his full name - all of which i am sure i will be talking about. first listen to this song was a bit taken aback, cause its quite different than his my name is... stuff. [...]
PREVIEW: Wooden Wand - "Southern Colorado Song" from We Have Signal on Vimeo . i had written about mr james jackson toth's recent wooden wand record blood oaths of the new blues , but then i lost 7 months worth of posts. so its gone, forever... oh maybe google cache has it, but its not the same. still i wanted to make mention of it again, to you dear visitors, cause it is quite amazing. i have been a fan for quite a while now, and looking through my archives it looks like [...]

i have been hearing of atlanta's little tybee for at least a couple years now, and like a lot of bands, never listened to em. well, its been a lazy sunday morning, and i figured what the hell? firstly, they have a new record cout on paper garden records entitled for distant viewing - i believe it came out last week. secondly, now just going by what i hear in this song, they kind of remind me of beachwood sparks if they had been raised on graceland era paul simon instead of the byrds, zombies, etc. i may [...]

happy friday! i am not gonna muddy this up with a bunch of words and stuff. so here is the info on this molina cover compilation/tribue being put out by graveface records , which i believe is due out on 4.23. we're calling this collection weary engine blues, named after a piece of artwork by molina that serves as the cover of this cd release. confirmed contributions so far from: john vanderslice, mark kozelek, hospital ships, lucas oswald, jonathan meiburg, damien jurado, dreamend, brown bird, haunt the house, tw walsh, phil elverum, alisdair roberts, [...]

top of the day, jerkballs! i hate being late to the game when it comes to some artists, but i cant know about everything no matter how hard i try. this time im talking about dallas based artist ronnie fauss and his record i am the man you know im not - great title. granted, i have not heard said record, but this song, see below, i am totally digging. the record came out last year, but has been recently re-released via new west records' imprint normaltown . a bunch of people who's opinion i [...]

if there is a band that can harken me back to my favorite era of music, late 802s to mid 902s, i will be a fan for life. for life, i tell ya! hailing from the great state of texas, dont fuck with it, and the lovely city of san antonio are the mites. they bring me back to when my life when i didnt give a shit about nothing, except lil old me. i wasnt a dick, but shit i was like 20, what do you expect? if you dig the likes of yo la tengo, my bloody valentine, [...]
