Will Sheff and company have just released a free ep, Golden Opportunities 2 . The record is a collection of covers available via the Okkervil River site in either .mp3 or .m4a formats. Havent spent a whole lot of time with the ep, or to be honest, the last album I Am Very Far . However, I consider this announcement of free music a nice reminder to dive back into their stuff. Download currently available on the Okkervil [...]

i have a shitload of emails pushing this and that band, but in all honesty they mostly go ignored. i like finding stuff on my own. granted i have stated in the past that i know for damn sure that i miss out on a lot of great stuff by ignoring these emails, but its the 15 year old in me that hates to be told to listen to this that and the other band. with that said, i stumbled across this band, should , who i believe are out of baltimore and their like a fire without [...]

As promised , here's a Great Lake Swimmers show from Schuba's in 2005. Oddly enough, I've managed to see just about every GLS show at Schuba's except this one. There are some of my most listened to GLS songs in this set and the seasonally-appropriate (and beautiful, even if the chorus is just a sequential listing of Toronto train stops ) "I Will Never See The Sun". The Tom Waits cover, "Innocent When You Dream" is a unique interpretation, unreleased on any albums and without a [...]

Part two of the Jeff Tweedy solo show from Harper College in 1999. Part one is here . Some great stuff. "Hoodoo Voodoo" as played here is as good as any other version I've ever heard. The "Red Eyed Blue/I Got You" is another highlight. Enjoy. Via Chicago Hoodoo Voodoo Pecan Pie Red Eyed Blue/I Got You Christ For President [...]

top of the morning. today, i needed something a little different to listen to considering i have been listening to the same 10-15 records for the past 6 months or so. i happened to stumble upon british songstress emmy the great's sophomore record, virtue . im only about half way through it, but i dig it, and is definitely calming my heavy soul. its poppy in the way that tori amos is poppy, but she doesnt sound anything like her and thats for the better, imo. if you be a fan of the likes of feist, martha [...]

Here's a nice Turn on the Bright Lights era Interpol show from the 40 Watt in Athens, GA. These guys never sounded quite as good as they did on Turn on the Bright Lights , in my opinion. That being said , this album remains in some made up list of albums I listened to a lot in the 20002s. The record has a strange quality about it, it's one of those albums that was the soundtrack for about six months somewhere in '02-'03. [...]

One of my all-time favorite live recordings. Part one of two. Look for the second half later this week. Had this show for almost 10 years now and I still listen to it regularly. If I was ever in the highly unlikely situation of being forced to listen to only one Jeff Tweedy / Wilco recording for the rest of my life, there's a legitimate chance this would be it with Being There coming in a very close second. The quality of the recording is top shelf and the set couldnt be better [...]
A little something to cap off your weekend. Tony Dekker, the man behind Great Lake Swimmers , and friends covering Springsteen at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. I had the pleasure of seeing this played live in Madison around 2006 and have been searching for it ever since. As far as I know, this is the only version that's out on the internet. If you're not familiar with Great Lake Swimmers, you should be. Look for a full GLS show we'll post this week.

Wanted to put this up again, because it's fantastic and there were a couple requests for it. Happy Sunday afternoon. Always been a fan of Zevon. Listening to Excitable Boy as a kid got me started. As I became old enough to understand just how funny, disturbing and moving the lyrics were was when I realized the genius of Zevon. If you've never spent any time with his music, this is a great place to start. Here's a Warren Zevon show from The Record Plant in Sausalito in July of 1978. [...]

"First came the scream and blood on the floor, the alcohol and the magazines…" I have been chilled, haunted and intrigued ever since hearing the opening lines of Damien Jurado 's amazing Where Shall You Take Me. One listen to Jurado's songs is akin to eavesdropping on a conversation you know you shouldn't hear, but have heard too much to tune it out. It causes you to lean forward, intent to hear the details of the infidelity, knowing full well the pleasure of the sin will never outweigh the pain it creates. Damien's songcraft [...]

2009 was my first foray into the musical world of the roadside graves. i had a brief affair with their if shacking up is all you want to do , but maybe i just wasnt ready for em? i maybe listened to it a half a dozen times, then just stopped. 2009 brought me their minor classic and my favorite record from that year, my sons home . a sprawling 18 track opus comprised of familiar themes, but set in situations/stories that probably arent for everyone, but they touch a nerve/heartstring nonetheless. that is if you let em, [...]

found this earlier today, and have gave it a few listens even though it sounds as if it was digitally transferred via cassette. its pretty warbly which of course is the sure sign that it came from previously mentioned format. its definitely listenable even its current state. these are two tracks from a possible compilation entitled vox comp , which came out in 93, of a band called zide. if you like the shoegaze movement from that era you should dig this. siruac cifudiny

top of the day after thanksgiving, or for those of you anywhere else, the day after a thursday. my thanksgiving was lovely and relaxing. we went to the wife's new restaurant/hotel, the renaissance marriott in baton rouge. took some pics of the event with my new panasonic lx5, which is a super awesome camera, btw. thanks to my father for purchasing it for me. i had to sell my g12, which is also a great camera, and really sucked being without one. woke up this morning with "san diego serenade" in my head and thus [...]

the fine, distinguished men from slothbear are back with a new ep entitled cantor on which they just released via their bandcamp site. they have come along way since the first time i hear em a few years ago. back then they were pure fuzzed out pop, emphasis on the fuzz, and now while all everything i liked about em, initially, is still intact its definitely a more "accessible" fuzzed out pop. if you dig the likes a magoo - if you remember them, mid-era gbv, apples in stereo, sonic youth and dan bejar than you [...]

Been spending a fair amount of time listening to Chicago's own Slushy . Self-described as bubblegum pop, the fact is they write quality lo-fi pop music and have a pretty goddamn catchy sound. Check out "Wrong Words" below. If you like it, visit their bandcamp site for more. Also, they're playing Reggie's in Chicago on December 3rd with Question Mark & The Mysterians. Slushy - Wrong Words

top of the evening! cant wait for this one to, hopefully, grace my inbox sooner than later. this one being lambchop's 2012 merge release, 2.21 to be exact, mr. m . damn, i cant believe they have been around 20 freakin years, and this is their 11th record. just seems like yesterday, i was being blown by their '96 record, how i quit smoking and my favorite lambchop record, the follow up, thriller . imo, kurt wagner is the coolest dude in the rock and the roll. in other news, merge has released [...]

oh glorious friday, you couldnt have come any sooner. well actually you could have but i wont hold it against ya. next week is a 3 day, which i need more than you know, but im sure most of you are in the same boat. in other news, it amazing how many glorious songs victoria williams has written but i just cant listen to them unless they are sung by others. anyway, i had a request for a repost of these and if they're easy to find i am more than willing. definitely the best modest mouse [...]
im not a centro-matic fanboy at all... again off my favorite record of the year candidate waltz .
