What ever happened to Bush’s exuberant Mars policy? I was so fucking JACKED to finally realize my lifelong dream of seeing Man’s footprints on the surface of Mars. Somebody seriously needs to get a copy of the screenplay of Capricorn One to Karl Rove, stat. Honestly, though, if the administration actually did pull the Capricorn One ruse, no one would hardly bat an eyelash. That would be about the sixth craziest thing they’ve done since they’ve embarked on their planetary ruination crusade. God sure works in mysterious ways! :) A [...]

“I think art should be a bomb. It doesn’t matter if its a cheap comic book or a seven-inch single, as long as it does something to you.†Those are the words of comic book legend Alan Moore. I couldn’t agree more. The Jam is a band I know little about. I’d never heard a complete song start to finish until last weekend when I was sampling the Tomorrow with Tom Snyder DVD and came across a live performance of a song titled “Pretty Green.†Before the song was half over, I knew I loved it and [...]

The Church today released its nineteenth album in twenty-five years, Uninvited, Like the Clouds . First, a note about the artwork: the cover, painted by singer Steve Kilbey and derided by some Church diehards, immediately reminded me of the cover of the Talking Heads’ Little Creatures . I like the cover. I much prefer it to the Forget Yourself cover, which was simply a field of red with the band’s name and album title in the center. I’m guessing the critics are turned off by the folk art aspect of Kilbey’s painting. [...]

The Timedoor staff will be reading the book and commenting on it and spotlighting music covered in the book over the next several months. Here’s a blurb from the official book site : “Punk’s raw power rejuvenated rock, but by summer 1977 it had become a parody of itself. Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-84 [...]

The new Flaming Lips album, At War With the Mystics , was released today. The first time I heard the band was on the 1989 Neil Young tribute album, The Bridge . They did a rendition of “After the Gold Rush.†I next heard the band when “She Don’t Use Jelly†became a minor hit in the mid 90’s. Soon after, I saw the band live for the first and only time at a 1995 radio fest at the Marcus Amphitheatre here in Milwaukee. Like many a radio fest, the lineup was diverse to a fault: that day [...]
