Los Lobos probably isn't the most likely candidate for "blog review" because, after all, they're not unknowns; Los Lobos are, to me, one of the most revered and beloved bands ever to emerge from the flourishing community of East Los Angeles. They are known and respected the world over, ripe with master musicianship and a track record to prove it. It occasions to concern me that in a band whose songwriting has been so consistently fascinating, their biggest single has proven to be a cover of "La Bamba" from the movie of the same [...]

The last seven days have felt like an eternity while I sat here and coughed up a lung. If not for getting addicted to Lost (thanks to some of my good blogger universe friends, you have ruined me for life), I would have never gotten out of bed. Just as consumption was taking over my body, I found it within my power to get up long enough to check out some tracks that ended up on my virtual desk. I see no reason not to share with you, for this music will relax bronchial tubes [...]

I try to go thru my emails with a fine-toothed comb when time permits, and Saturday is frequently my best opportunity. How pleased I was to receive an email from Brazilian artist Chico Correa which contained a link to his self-titled album, released by Japanese net label Bump Foot . I will confess: when I read his name, my mind went where yours just did - boy, that name...it seems so...familiar! The sound, however, was anything but familiar to me. What I got to hear was a mixture of very [...]

One of the big highlights of CMJ last fall was Vice Late Nights @ Cakeshop. Somehow, 250 people managed to fit into a room that comfortably holds 60 maximum for a series of knock-down drag-out sessions that smacked up every fool that set foot into the place. Calling the experience "amazing" or "breathtaking" or "dope", that's just not enough. Anyways, the point is that one particular night stands out among the rest - Flosstradamus, Kid Sister, Chromeo and A-Trak blew the fucking house apart. Tonight, A-Trak (known to much [...]

Anyone who has been following this blog or who followed me over from Scenstars knows that I'ma big proponent of the band Polyrock . Consistently hailing them as one of the great lost bands of the post-punk/new wave era, this writer has always felt very strongly that their two albums produced by, and featuring, Philip Glass and Kurt Munkacsi provided a clear foundation and paved the way for a number of name artists today. They were dangerous, seductively fascinating, and completely inventive in their ways. The big crime that was [...]
Just got this note from David Condos with a new video enclosed! We are pleased to unveil this new short video that gives you a behind-the-scenes look into the recording of the David Condos song "When The Land Becomes The Sea." It includes never-before-seen footage from the Bridgeway Studio sessions that produced the debut album, "Smoking City," and more.

What the hell was I supposed to do? Representing from all corners of the internet, I came across a grip of scrum-dilly tracks the last few days while I was out on patrol. I can't sit on this stuff, they are just too tasty to hang on to and not hip you to them. First off, let's talk about Cansei de Ser Sexy aka CSS. Over at Pound for Pound , they hit me up with *three* different remixes of "Let's Make Love and Listen To Death From Above" from Spank Rock, Simian [...]

New York, NY: The FADER magazine, the definitive voice of emerging music, releases its 45th issue, putting Smog genius Bill Callahan on the cover after 20 years of heartbreak evolved into his current album, Woke on a Whaleheart. It's the first album under his real name instead of the "Smog" moniker, and The FADER finds out the full story. Also gracing the cover is producer Polow Da Don: a not-so-secret weapon who has crafted cutting-edge sounds for everyone from Fergie, Ludacris, R Kelly and the Pussycat Dolls. You may have also heard his current monster smash "Throw Some D's" [...]

During the period from 1992 until 2003, very few who knew about Elliott Smith could accurately describe the feelings that his songs gave listeners. I have to start with a caveat : I always feel a bit queasy writing these "if you knew Elliott" pieces because to me he was much more than just an inspiration or a explanation for why I was so fucked up in the head. For the purposes of this exercise, I may have trouble just focusing on his music. I hope you will forgive me for trying to [...]

I'm like you, I am human and I need to be loved just like everybody else does. My friend Chris IM'ed me a bit ago and said he was preparing to "do the deed" and he wanted some suggestions of songs that would set the mood. Now, since I'm a virgin (insert roaring laughter here), I can only imagine what songs I would listen to in that magical moment when the lights go down and it's just the two of us (you and me, that is). So, I sat down and went through my playlist noting the [...]

Or at least a clever anniversary related to that birthday. Come buy her a shot! See you there!

If you're the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, you've got the opportunity to set the world on fire in one way or another. But merely having genetic predisposition does not always serve as a beacon towards accomplishment; a person must find their own voice. So goes the tale of the delicate and angelic Charlotte Gainsbourg , an accomplished actress and vocalist whose trajectory keeps rising and rising. Collaborating with French super-duo Air, Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker and singer-songwriter Neil Harmon, Gainsbourg released 5:55 last year to a flurry [...]
That is all. The world is safe. Carry on.
