INTERVIEW: Jeff Klein Preparing Follow-Up To Critically-Acclaimed Album, Rigorous Summer Tour Planned

INTERVIEW: Jeff Klein Preparing Follow-Up To Critically-Acclaimed Album, Rigorous Summer Tour Planned Jeff Klein , the handsome, gravelly-voiced impassioned songwriter whose defiantly dark and ghostly prolific second album The Hustler was released in the U.S. last year to a mass of critical acclaim, is getting ready to head back in the studio to demo out tracks for his new and as-yet untitled third album. The brooding singer/songwriter with roots both in New York City and in Austin recently received 5-star writeups for the English re-release of The Hustler from UK press The Guardian, The Sun, and The Independent. Ones To Watch: YuLeS, A Truly Great Unsigned Act.

Ones To Watch: YuLeS, A Truly Great Unsigned Act. This has to be the most terrific discovery I've made in new band browsing recently and I find it very hard to believe they've not signed a record deal with anyone. YuLeS is comprised of brothers Bertrand and Guilliaume from France who admit to having been "brought up in a house full of vinyl records, books and music instruments". The result is, strangely, Americana at its finest. Here stands a duo living in France who has more in common with Nashville than some of the Nashville artists I've heard. What I [...]

Page France’s Double CD “Pear/Sister Pinecone” Set For Release

Page France’s Double CD “Pear/Sister Pinecone” Set For Release I remember when I first read about Page France over at You Aint No Picasso . Matt's affinity for them made me search out more from them, and I fell in love with Hello Dear Wind over night. I started reading a lot of gobbledygook on the blogosphere about them sounding "too Christian rocky" which just sent me over the edge. I hear what you're saying, but this isn't a Christian Rock band. In YANP's recent interview with them, the band had this to say: [...]

Sonic Youth’s “Rather Ripped” Is Rather Good.

Sonic Youth’s “Rather Ripped” Is Rather Good. Sonic Youth is a perennial favorite of mine and probably of yours if you've been one of my regular readers - always experimental, always doing something cool and different, I mean...it's fucking Sonic Youth. What do you expect? Well, the last couple of albums have had interesting moments to them. Both Sonic Nurse and Murray Street had moments that glistened, but I don't really return to those as much as I do the early Sonic Youth records and their first three Geffen releases, [...]

Coachella: What I MIssed Pt. 6 featuring TV On The Radio

Coachella 2006 - TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun
I'd like the audio to be better on this clip. Hell, I'd like the video to be better, too. But "Staring At The Sun" is great stuff.

Coachella: What I Missed Pt. 5 featuring Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y Control
Karen, you have my heart.

Coachella: What I Missed Pt. 4 featuring Animal Collective

Animal Collective-We Tigers
"We Tigers" is a wonderful song. Animal Collective is a wonderful band. I would've liked to see this show. Sigh..

Coachella: What I Missed Pt. 3 featuring The Go! Team

The Go! Team - Huddle Formation (Live @ Coachella 2006)
Well, hopefully they'll come this way at some time in the next dozen years. In the meantime, "Huddle Formation".

Coachella: What I Missed Pt. 2 featuring Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand at Coachella 2006 - Do You Want To
This version of "Do You Want To" looks like it was pretty fun.

Coachella: What I Missed Pt. 1 featuring Daft Punk

daft punk coachella
Total bummer that I couldn't make it to Coachella this year, but thanks to fans I have YouTube to enjoy clips of it! I found out (too late) that you could watch it streaming live - but, you know, that's okay. I didn't really want to watch it streaming for some reason. Anyways, here's a clip of Daft Punk from Coachella that is fresh out of the oven doing part of "Robot Rock" </center There's more [...]

Early Morning Konnichiwa: Maboroshi “Funky Glamorous Pt. 2″

Last year, a couple of bloggers ( music (for robots) was the first I saw and I dropped a little something too) wrote about the Japanese hip-hop band Maboroshi and gave you a taste of their tracks. YouTube being the greatest anything ever, I found the video for the song "Funky Glamorous Pt. 23. Great song, cool video. You almost forget they're not rapping in English.

Saturday Night Turntablism: Q-Bert | Justin Hand

QBert Superman Video
Be sure and tune into LFO Radio tonight from 10pm to 3am CST for Loudersoft's Justin Hand spinning a live set from Dish in Memphis. Until that cranks up, why not bliss out to 8.5 minutes of Q-Bert's "Superman" video? It's....mind-boggling. Why? Because the majority of the people who read this cannot do what Q-Bert does. Respect.

NEWS: Long Winters Are Putting The Days To Bed This Summer.

NEWS: Long Winters Are Putting The Days To Bed This Summer. According to Angry Ape , Seattle's delightful supergroup-of-sorts The Long Winters next release will be a full-length album this Summer. Barsuk will be releasing the new 11 track CD on July 25th, which the group have imaginatively titled Putting The Days To Bed . The last material from The Long Winters was the 2005 EP Ultimatum EP , and this LP is the official album follow-up to When I Pretend To Fall . Putting The Days To Bed Tracklisting: [...]

Homocore + Tribute Band = Black Fag.

Homocore + Tribute Band = Black Fag. I get a lot of submissions from bands who want their music reviewed, and I listen to everything. But sometimes, I get something and I really have to do a double take. I really didn't know what to expect when I got my hands on this CD from Los Angeles pink rock band Black Fag . I looked at the cover and thought, "Am I reading this right?" I wasn't sure whether or not I should be offended, but then I got inside and discovered the concept. How about an all-gay Black Flag [...]

On First Listen: Neil Young’s Living With War

On First Listen: Neil Young’s Living With War I stayed up extra late tonight so I could catch the premiere of the web stream of Neil Young's Living With War over at NeilYoung.com , due for download sale starting May 2nd. Here are my impressions, song by song: 1) After The Garden - This is pure protest power pop Neil Young, with no rough edges removed. It's beautifully angry. 2) Living With War - At first, I didn't want to like it. But once it gets into the "Star Spangled Banner", I [...]

VIDEO: Midlake’s “Young Bride”

I saw this up on YouTube and noticed it was the finished video for the storyboards posted up at Gorilla vs. Bear last month. The storyboards alone were stunning, the finished video speaks for itself. Enjoy.

Smoosh - Find A Way

Smoosh - Find A Way I was pleased and delighted to discover today on Smoosh 's MySpace page a new track from their forthcoming release Free To Stay available for download! It's a great song & this is hard evidence that Smoosh is no gimmick. 12-year-old Cloe plays the drums, 14-year-old Cloe plays keyboards and provides the vocals. The album will be released on Barsuk Records, and the pair have a slough of tour dates support Eels starting in late May. Check out the song "Find A Way", and then head on over to their [...]
