are you Joe-king?

are you Joe-king? Gourmet Grocer's NYC Debut Marred By Door Drama The Trader Joe's buzz is in the New York City air. In fact, for months now, Manhattanites have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of yet another organic, specialty-food shopping alternative. So when the gourmet grocery-store chain cut the ribbon on its brand-new Union Square location two weeks ago, spirits and expectations were about as high as the outfit's prices are low. To be sure, opening weekend found curious New Yorkers lined up by the hundreds for a first look at the brand-new David to neighbor [...]

snow in april

snow in april What a tease. Three days ago, children, hippies and even hoboes frolicked about Central Park, welcoming the apparent first real day of spring. Frisbees, kites, outdoor seating...to be sure, every New Yorker thought we had turned the corner. But today, on April 5, 2006, New York City is cloaked with a filthy, snowflake-spun haze blanket, and the lovely Manhattan skyline is about as blurry as Scott Stapp's vision at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday night. If you'll recall, the last time it snowed, we built ourselves a symbolic Tony Danza [...]

red-headed blueshirts

I realize baseball pays the bills in this nation of simpletons, but the New York periodicals' saturating MLB coverage is really starting to get on my nerves. Is the biggest sports story in New York today really the 3-and-4 Yankees? With six pages of Bomber coverage, the Post seems to think so. But wait. Didn't the Rangers just clinch their first playoff berth in nine years? Didn't most pre-season polls news have them finishing dead last in the NHL? Aren't they, with three games remaining in the regular season, in a wild, three-legged race [...]

make a sweet sound

"Sweet Sound" by Bob Schneider

schneider

I've seen Bob Schneider in concert a handful of times, but last night's show at the Knitting Factory (best venue in NYC) ranks up there with one of the finest. Nothing bugs me more than paying to see a band that spits out album versions of songs that have already oversaturated my earholes, and for the most part, I know I'm not going to get that from a Bob Schneider show (which is why I'm willing to drop $20 on a ticket every time he's in town). But frankly, my last [...]

d-day

I can say with a relatively low margin of error that tonight may be the biggest night of my young life. Who would have thought that an evening of such magnitude would fall on a Tuesday night, half-way through just my 25th year of existence? Not me. But then again, who would have thought that the Rangers' final regular-season game would have Atlantic Division title implications? According to the dismal pre-season prognoses, not a damn soul. The Rangers, clinging to first place in the Atlantic by one point, host the powerhouse Ottawa Senators [...]

rangers...

...suck at hockey. Dismal slide to cap off a marvelous season, but at least we're in the damn playoffs. And that Rangers-Devils series has to be the most exciting of the first round. At least we're not in Durham. In other news, looks like the Cruise missle smoked out a bouncing baby girl. Lord -- or whomever the Scientologists call their supreme being -- help that child.

bowels of hell

bowels of hell With their best forward, defenseman and goalie all on the bench, nobody in their right mind expected the Rangers to win game two in the swamp tonight. And they sure as hell met expectations. While this was a tighter, more focused Rangers team than whatever showed up to Saturday's debacle, the Blueshirts were once again simply outmanned by a faster, tougher, more-disciplined Devils team. League-MVP Jagr out. Defensive ole faithful Kaspairitis out. Team confidence-deflating Weekes between the pipes. For us realists, the game was over before it even began; the final buzzer [...]

California

As long as we're enjoying California weather in NYC today, why not enjoy some California Soul from the likes of Marlena Shaw? Also, I can't get this opening jam from Friday night's Soulive show out of my head. For those who care, this is presumably from the soul/jazz band's forthcoming "rock" album. And to bring this post full-circle, here's Soulive doing a quick hit of Tupac's "California Love" , from that same show. And for my next trick: Brazilian girls

Though this classic is posted in the "moving pictures" section to the right, I do believe it's worthy of its own post.
