As part of a compilation CD included in next month's issue of Mojo magazine, we have a very excellent cover of New Order's "Leave Me Alone" by Destroyer that was released a day or two ago. The compilation contains track for track covers from 13 different artists of the seminal 1983 album, Power, Corruption & Lies . After listening to it a couple just now at my desk, I can say that this is a fairly faithful cover of one of my favorite, though, underrated [...]
Considering I had no idea what would be my first music-related post to kick off 2012 (I seriously haven't heard anything new in a few months), delving back into my emails seemed like a serious undertaking. Thankfully, it didn't take too long to find something that tickled my fancy: a new single/album from Frankie Rose ! While releasing a solid record in 2010 with Frankie Rose and the Outs (listen to it here via Spotify), it's become quite clear that the reverb-soaked girl-pop sound was starting to wear out [...]

The Graboid is back this week and with so many great albums to choose from, it comes as a friendly reminder of why this can be such a useful resource for you week in and week out. The 10000-pound gorilla in the room has to be M832s Hurry Up, We're Dreaming - the ambitious double album from Anthony Gonzalez. While an excellent record, there is another release that should not be overlooked and might be just as worthy of your well-earned money - Real Estate's Days . As far as I'm concerned, [...]
I was debating whether or not to post this week's radio show due to the fact that when I arrived at the station on Monday morning, there appeared to be nothing but dead air. I assume it was the weather or some kind of maintenance, but signal problems were experienced through my entire show as you will find out if you decide to listen to the stream below. In my opinion, I would just skip the entire first hour as there are points of dead air and scrambled signal reception. Anyways, hope you enjoy as I played [...]
If you've been listening to my radio show the past couple of weeks, you'll notice my current infatuation with the current crop of excellent bands on the Captured Tracks label based out of Brooklyn. One band in particular that I've been warming up to is Blouse , a three-piece out of Portland who play the kind of hazy, dream-pop that seeps into your consciousness and wants you to get lost in their moody synths. The band had only released two demos on Bandcamp before the aforementioned Captured Tracks released [...]
Craft Spells is the brainchild of 22 year-old songwriter Justin Vallesteros, a bedroom DIY project that has flourished into what many call one of the better debuts of 2011 with the album, Idle Labor . This is dreamy, nostalgic 80s pop at its best and one of the many great bands currently on the stable of the frighteningly good Captured Tracks label based out of Brooklyn. Check out the second of three videos filmed by the Polish-born director Monika Lenczewska with work from Belarusian visual artist Yelena Zhelezov, and Manchester-bred set designer [...]
Found this nice little video while perusing Eardrums Music (great source for all things indiepop) of an acoustic session featuring UK quartet Veronica Falls , who released one of my favorite debuts a couple of weeks ago on the mighty Slumberland Records . The band just wrapped up a US tour, and as of now I'm not sure of the band's plans on any future tour dates. Will keep you posted as soon as I hear something, but for now, enjoy this video! (via This Is Fake DIY ). [...]
Emmy The Great and current beau Tim Wheeler (frontman of Ash ) are set to release what may be the greatest thing to end the new year: A Christmas album! The album is titled This is Christmas , and the two have released a track to wet your appetite titled "Christmas Day (I wish I was surfing)." You can definitely see the tone that this album is going for right away as soon as you hear this fun, upbeat pop song. I'm just glad they didn't decide to just do straight-up [...]
![[MP3] Tennis :: "Tell Her No" (The Zombies cover)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3790121_lg.jpg)
If you're a long-time reader of this blog, I'm sure you have come to grips at some point that I tend to be a little late on a lot of new music news. It could be a couple days, weeks, or even months before something comes across my radar. It happens, and so is the case with this excellent cover by the husband and wife duo Tennis of The Zombies' "Tell Her No." But, when you're able to keep up on the news through great blogs like Tympanogram , than this kind of thing is hopefully forgiven. [...]
A new video for the song "De.con.struc.tion" has been released from London-based group Fanfarlo's still yet-to-be-titled sophomore album. I can't tell you how excited to hear this record! In case you missed, I've included links to the MP3/video for the first single "Replicate". MP3 / Video :: "Replicate"
![[photos] St. Vincent @ Urban Lounge](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3788264_lg.jpg)
Photo by: Heather Romney I've been fortunate enough to see St. Vincent (Annie Clark) a few times dating back to when she was supporting her debut album Marry Me in 2007. While she's continued to improve as a performer, one thing that was clearly evident even back when I first saw her live was her phenomenal guitar skills. Being on stage for the first time at the Urban Lounge in Salt Lake City (if I'm wrong on this, let me know) to a very fevered crowd, stood a confident performer with a [...]
This week's radio show was a blast, primarily because there are no evident screw-ups to be heard throughout the entire two hours. Still sound uncomfortable speaking at times, and laughing at my own bad jokes, but it's all about the music, right? RIGHT?! I played the new single from Phantogram's forthcoming Nightlife EP on Barsuk, along with a block devoted to Rose Melberg projects (Tiger Trap, The Softies, Go Sailor, Brave Irene). You can catch the full playlist here . You can check out the stream on SoundCloud below, but feel free to download [...]

A couple days late this week, but The Graboid is up and open for business with the week's new releases. It's my intention to get this up on the actual album release day, but I've been a bit busy. Hopefully, things will get back to normal starting next week, but who knows! Anyways, two big hitters top the list of new releases with Björk's Biophilia which she describes as "a multi-media project encompassing music, apps, internet, installations and live shows." It's an intriguing concept, but I've yet to tackle this one outside of listening [...]
Considering I had no blog to gush about how much I love the new Dum Dum Girls record, I figure this would be an appropriate time with the recent release of their new video (well, it's a week or two old now) for the track "Bedroom Eyes". It's not too much of a stretch to say that these gals have improved upon their debut album by leaps and bounds, as they honestly don't even sound like the same band anymore. They've managed to pull away from their contemporaries of that fuzzy, surf-guitar pop [...]
I admit to being incredibly late to listening to Phantogram's 2010 debut album, Eyelid Movies . It wasn't untl I randomly listened to "Mouthful of Diamond" that I became instantly hooked onto their catchy electronic beats and vocal harmonies from Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter. The duo is currently set to release their sophomore record on Barsuk , and if these singles are any indication, it's going to be a really fun and upbeat follow-up. Sophomore jinx? Pssh. A video for "As Far As I Can See" premiered earlier in the month, and [...]
Now this is an amazing video to catch right before I decide to hit the sack tonight. Thanks to Badass Digest for posting this gem of Jeff Mangum (the lyricist, vocalist and guitarist of the band Neutral Milk Hotel ) performing an acoustic set Tuesday evening in front of the Occupy Wall Street protesters attending the mass demonstration on Wall Street against financial greed and corruption. I have to say it's still strange seeing Mangum out there in public after being a recluse for years. He's [...]
One thing I had always wanted to do here on TYS is podcasting, and while I never really had the time or equipment to do that, I think this is a superior alternative to that. This radio show I've recently started at KRCL is a new wrinkle to add to the armor of this blog while living right here in Salt Lake City . KRCL , for those who are not familiar, is a great volunteer driven, non-profit, and listener-supported community radio station. It's true independent radio and I couldn't be more proud to be a part [...]

It's been a long time, but The Yellow Stereo is back in action! It also means that our staple feature, 'The Graboid' (Weekly/Daily/Whatever) also makes its triumphant return. This has always been my way to discover new music and while skimming through this week's releases, it quickly reminded me how useful doing this every week since 2006 has been for me. Hopefully, it has done the same for you. I haven't listened to many of these albums outside of Feist , DJ Shadow , and Zola Jesus , but have sampled enough to have a [...]
![[video] PJ Harvey :: "The Words That Maketh Murder" & "The Last Living Rose"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3144365_lg.jpg)
It wasn't till a couple of weeks ago that I realized that PJ Harvey had been working on a new record, let alone that it was set to be released next month. I guess it's one of those instances where the best surprises come when you least expect it. Let England Shake is Polly Jean's eighth studio album, her first since 20072s White Chalk . From what I've been able to hear so far, this seems akin to a spiritual cousin of 20002s Stories from the City, Stories from the [...]

The husband/wife duo of Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore are Tennis , who currently call Denver their home. Their recently released debut, Cape Dory , has delighted me to no end since the end of last year, and it's safe to say that it's one of the first great albums to kick off the new year. Utilizing a sound that combines a lo-fi pop aesthetic with '60s beach guitar melodies, the album is just packed to the gills from beginning to end with wonderful pop gems. It's hard to pick just one [...]
