For those in Utah, the Twilight Concert Series for this coming summer has been announced, and the line-up is great. The venue has moved to Pioneer Park, which will mean more space (which was getting necessary as the acts playing these concerts have been bigger each year), and once again the shows will be free to the public. In fact, it makes me sad I'll be moving to St. Louis before the second half of these shows... Here's the line-up so far, with a couple dates to be announced: July 8 - August 26, [...]
On May 11, The National are back with High Violet , and I can tell you right now it's a great album, on par with anything they've done. "Terrible Love" opens the disc in a wash of fuzzed out guitars and the slow-burn intensity the band's known for, but it's in a live recording that the song really takes off. In this Pitchfork.tv video, The National play the track at an abandoned castle on the Hudson River. The abandoned building in the middle of the woods is [...]
Apparently, lotto commercials can be awesome now. This one features new Grizzly Bear and was directed by Patrick Daughters ("Two Weeks," "12343) and choreographed by Michael Rooney (who did the dance sequence in (500) Days of Summer ). This would be one of those times when a commercial manages to be something interesting in its own right. I wouldn't mind a full-length video of this... The Black Keys make some of my favorite straight-up blues rock, and they're back with a new album, Brothers , on May 18. In the meantime, there's this video for "Tighten Up," which not only proves that the guys still rock, but that simple videos featuring dancing dinosaur puppets and occasional subtitles can be quite entertaining. Has it really been three years since the release of Stars' last album, In Our Bedroom after the War ? It honestly doesn't feel that long ago, but time has a way of sneaking up on you like that. For me personally, hearing about a new Stars album, I can almost guarantee what kind of record I can expect to hear. The band never strays too far from their upbeat pop leanings, and it's what they do best so why bother to change things up? That's what solo records [...]

In a follow-up to the very good 2006 album Those The Blokes , The Magic Numbers are set to release the new album titled The Runaway on June 7th. While this new single "The Pulse" has some nice things going on with the string section along with Romeo Stodart's vocals, I have to say that it's sort of underwhelming for me compared to the great pop songs that opened the last album. It's that vocal chemistry between the Stodart siblings (Michele Stodart) that has always stood out as they [...]

A nice little update to receive from one of my favorite bands of last year, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart . While In the midst of an exhaustive tour around the world, it's great that the band still finds time to put out material like this new single and the recently released EP. The new single, "Say No To Love" is due out via Slumberland on June 8th. _________________________ A message from the band: Hi Everyone! [...]

Maybe this string of bands releasing cover albums this year is a way to take a breather between record releases, as Mates of State join the likes of Nada Surf and The Bird and the Bee in releasing cover/tribute albums. "We've been talking about doing a covers record for a long time," the Connecticut-based duo said. "We'd hear a great song at 2 A.M. while driving the straight line from one part of Texas to the next, and all we'd want to do is play that song as [...]

Blair , a former New Orleans native now residing in Brooklyn, is another of the many acts that made some headway at last month's SXSW. Though, I remember her bursting onto the scene in 2007 with her Pluto EP, she had recently released a new full-length back in January on Aquarium Drunkard's label Autumn Tone . I've been listening to Die Young over the past couple of weeks and have really enjoyed the simple pop songs that are littered throughout. And while Blair's vocals are very sweet, [...]

I really dislike doing The Graboid is such huge chunks like this, but rather than skipping weeks, this is how it'll have to be done until I get this back to being a weekly posting. That being said, there have been a ton of great releases over the past few weeks with one in particular from last week that I've been extremely excited about: the self-titled LP from Black Tambourine . It isn't exactly "new" material, but a complete compilation of their material from the early 90s (they only lasted two years). [...]

In March, The National launched a rather ill-advised viral campaign to hype up their highly anticipated album, High Violet . While I found it unncessary that the band would even need such a thing, I still didn't know what "High Violet" was at the time - which still kind of irritates me now that we all know what it is. Just let us know what is is up front! No need for bullshit like that - leave that kind of nonsense to video game publishers and movie studios. [...]

I know that it's been a very long while since I've posted anything of significance here. Everyone needs time away, and no one knows this more than myself. Anywho, I am back and ready to get this show on the road! For a couple of weeks or around when SXSW started, I completely avoided listening to any new music. It's kind of depressing not being able to make it to Austin this year after making a promise to myself the year before that I would come back. Well, trying to get back into the swing of things, I [...]

With so many high-profile albums out this week (and this month for that matter), it once again makes for an increasingly difficult task of figuring out what to spend your hard-earned cash on. First off is Broken Bells , the highly anticipated collaboration between James Mercer, lead singer and guitarist of The Shins, and Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton. I've yet to hear this one myself, but there's more than enough reason to give this one a shot just solely on the talent involved alone. There are also some new albums from the likes of The Knife [...]
When I first heard Summer Camp's "Ghost Train" via GvB last year, I couldn't help but love this infectious track - coming off as innocent as can be, with that dreamy chorus that was stuck in my head for weeks. The only problem was I knew absolutely nothing about them, as they followed that awful trend of being one of those mysterious bands that no one knew absolutely nothing about. It's something I hope is not followed in 2010, because it quickly killed any interest I had in them...well, at least until [...]

Summer Cats are set to release a brand new 73 as a follow up to what I considered my go-to record of choice last summer, Songs For Tuesdays , next week on the 16th. As you would expect, both tracks remain true to the formula of being deliciously catchy indiepop while neither run over two and a half minutes long in length - which in part packs the songs with plenty of memorable hooks, courtesy of vocalist Scott Stevens. In the coming months, you can catch the Melbourne-based band [...]

If there's one thing that instantly grabs my attention now as far as music goes, it's the sound of a catchy pop song. It seems I lack the patience now for anything slow-moving, or melancholy - which is kind of ironic now, as that was the sort of thing that I would primarily listen to a handful of years ago. Anyways, while digging around in my inbox this morning, I came across this gem from this Los-Angeles based duo of Jesse Kivel (frontman of Princeton ) and Zinzi Edmundson that go by [...]

It looks like 2010 is unofficially being taken over by Swedes, thanks to Swedish label Labrador , who already released one album earlier this week from Sambassadeur , and are set to release new albums from The Radio Dept . and Club 8 in the coming months. Unless you completely despise Swedish pop (if so, what's wrong with you?!), than you can only react with absolute delight over this news. Club 8 , a band I discovered in 2007 with their lovely album The Boy Who [...]

I'm probably the last person to mention Broken Social Scene's long-awaited return to the music world, but it's such exciting news that I honestly don't care if I am or not. Thinking back on things, their debut, You Forgot in In People was a catalyst for being one of the main influences for almost everything I listen to now. This along with their self-titled follow-up, which proved that they could easily outdo themselves with a far superior effort. And just how far has the band's reach gone as [...]

Sorry for the lack of updates the past few weeks, as I felt I needed a little break from the blog. Considering it's only March (seriously, it's already March!), it may seem odd that I would already need some time away, but hey, it happens! With that being said, the first thing to scratch off the list upon updating is catching up with the album releases from the past weeks, including this week as well. And as you notice, there's a ridiculous amount of releases that made their way down the pipe - almost too many to [...]
