Since the announcement of Have One on Me , Joanna Newsom's follow-up to 2006's flawless album Ys , Drag City has made available a few streams via their website. The first of which, "'813 resulted in the site being completely overloaded, with the second track titled "Good Intentions Paving Company" was made available earlier today. While I miss the quality string section that was prominent on Ys , the jazz leanings of this newest stream along with the general sparseness and stripped down sound of "'813 puts [...]

"I got excited by the idea of making dance music that's liquid in the way it flows back and forth, the sounds slosh around in pitch, timbre, pan... Dance music that sounds like it's made out of water, rather than made out of metallic stuff like most dance music does." I think it's important to read that statement from Dan Snaith before diving into this new track "Odessa" from the newly announced album Swim . Snaith's psych-pop project Caribou has primarily been known to lean towards the psychadelic (beautifully crafted, I [...]

Kicking off this week's new album releases on Groundhog's Day, we have Toro Y Moi's Causers of This , which is a very worthy debut amongst the ever-growing amount of bands coming down the pipe of similar ilk. Also garnering a lot of buzz is Midlake's The Courage of Others , the follow-up to to 2006's The Trials of Van Occupanther . I've yet to hear this one myself, but I did enjoy their previous album to some extent, so I'm definitely looking forward to checking it out soon. [...]

Lali Puna is a band that had seemingly disappeared over the last couple of years (six years to be exact) since the release of Faking the Books back in 2004. It's puzzling to be honest, as I quite liked that album and fondly remember purchasing it along with Of Montreal's Satanic Panic in the Attic when visiting a friend in Berkeley during the summer of that year. It was a time when I was more adventurous when it came to buying music, and picked it up solely based on Markus Acher's [...]
It only took a little more than a year and a half, but it's with a sigh of relief to report that The Radio Dept.'s oft-delayed third record Clinging To A Scheme will finally see the light of day on March April 20th in North America (frustrating!) and the 21st in Europe. The CD/LP will be available via Labrador . Now that we actually have album art and a tracklist to gloss over, it's actually starting to sink in and feel more official that this is finally [...]

Sorry for not having the Graboid up last week, but I've included those releases ( Spoon , Surfer Blood , Editors ) in with the already incredibly amount of great releases that are available this week. So much good amazing stuff to choose from, that one would be hard-pressed to decide where to spend their hard-earned cash. Two albums that I'm extremely excited about and will surely be picking up at some point this week are Beach House's awe-inspiring third album Teen Dream and The Magnetic Fields' [...]

I've already covered Basia Bulat's forthcoming release of Heart of My Own (which you can read here ), but I for one welcome any extra opportunities for you guys to hear new tracks from the record. Beggars has provided another downloadable MP3 titled "Go On" which you can check out below. I've listened to the album a couple of times, and I can tell you that it will come highly recommended when it's released on January 26th. Maybe I can arrange for a giveaway of the album - we'll [...]

Toro Y Moi , the moniker of 23 year-old Chad Bundick of South Carolina, made headway during the summer of last year with two really great demo tracks and was one of many that were pushing this lo-fi dreampop to the masses. Dreamwave, chillwave, glo-fi - all terms introduced to us through the likes of Neon Indian , Memory Tapes , Washed Out . We'll either come to love or hate these labels, and I don't care to use them myself as I still take a lot of flack for using 'electronica' still. [...]
Here's a sweet little video of the two performing the song live above a house terrace in LA. The announcement has been made of a co-headlining tour with El Perro Del Mar and Taken By Trees . Ms. Assbring seems to never tour anywhere remotely close to me, so the list of dates is a bit disappointing. One of these days, though! It shall happen! Tour dates can be seen here . MP3: El Perro Del Mar [...]

I didn't immediately jump onto this new track from The Knife when it flooded the internet a week ago, just because I was anticipating major disappointment. Of course, there is always a possibility of this with anything new, but considering my complete dislike for Karin Dreijer's solo record, I did have my doubts. Listening to this collaborative track Mt. Sims and Planningtorock while at work last night definitely put any fears I had to rest almost instantly. Clocking in at [...]

Kicking off the first big week of album releases in 2010, we have Vampire Weekend's highly anticipated sophomore record, Contra . From my few listens, the band still retains that signature African sound from their debut. But, I've never been too high on these guys in the first place, so maybe a more keen listener will notice any new flourishes with this one. Also out this week is Owen Pallett's Heartland , which sees the singer/songwriter disposing of his long-time Final Fantasy moniker. I think this change should have [...]

Because I'd rather not submit my email address (mine is flooded enough as is) and that I've yet to create a dummy account for this sort of thing, has kept me from actually listening to these until just a couple of minutes ago. If you've yet to get these, or still haven't heard about it yet - both "Ascending Melody" and "Emblem of the World" are available for free via the Dirty Projectors website (you can click the image above to send you to the website). A link is also provided on the site if you wish to [...]
The last time I heard any kind of news about Lucky Soul's follow-up to their 2007 debut, The Great Unwanted , was back in March of last year. The band released a downloadable MP3 for the first single "Woah Billy!" to coincide with the news of the upcoming record, so I figured we would probably see something before the year ended. Fast-forward to today and we're still waiting for A Coming of Age to grace us with it's presence. Thankfully, that day is quickly approaching as we can expect [...]

Indiepop seems to be alive and well here in Salt Lake City* as Sleepover are one of hopefully a lot more bands of the same ilk that I'm anxious to discover here. Matt Skatterbrain has the scoop on this trio, but I'm not completely out of the loop, as I had already been looking at these guys because I noticed earlier in the month that they were on the same bill with Athens, GA's own Nana Grizol for the January 21st show at Kilby Court [...]

Last year, Finnish duo Burning Hearts released one of, if not the most, overlooked album of 2009 with their debut, Aboa Sleeping . Consisting of nine finely crafted pop songs, the gorgeous instrumentation of this record coupled with the vocal warmth of vocalist Jessika Rapo makes this a record that just let's you know that you're listening to something special. Too much is never a bad thing in this case, as Shelflife Records has announced a brand new 73 single from the duo that is [...]

This bit of news comes courtesy of Chromewaves , who sadly enough, is probably the only blogger that springs to mind who would care enough to consider posting this sort of thing. Which is one of many reasons why Frank is awesome and you should be reading his blog if you don't already. Emma Pollock , who at this point is probably still best known as the former frontwoman of The Delgados , is set to release her second solo album The Law Of Large [...]

I've definitely been waiting to hear something new from The Besnard Lakes for quite a while now, so it's fantastic to finally get a sneak peak from the new album The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night . The last album was truly epic; just listen to "For Agent 133 if you require proof of this. Listening to the new track "Albatross", it seems to linger towards a sort of a lazy shoegaze (well, it's not really shoegaze at all, even though the band is known to lean that way at [...]

Pitchfork has the latest on Love Is All's third album titled Two Thousand and Ten Injuries which now finds the Swedes on new label Polyvinyl . It's currently set to be released on March 23, with complete details in the previous link from Pitchfork. A downloadable track called "Kungen" has also been made available, which I'm almost thankful to be listening to now since I'm just a lumbering mess right now (even though it's currently 2:30 in the afternoon). Listening to nearly every song in the band's catalog feels like it [...]

After a short hiatus to end the year (I needed a break! I'm not Largehearted Boy !), the Graboid is back to kick off 2010 properly. My hope is to be as consistent with this as possible, with updates every Tuesday. We'll see if that holds up, but I'm known to be a bit lazy every so often. Being the first week and all, one wouldn't expect an abundance of releases - and as you can see here it's slim pickings. Don't fret, as this month is going to be huge as many high-profile [...]
