MERRY ME

I've been in the strangest mood. I recently received the best news of my life from the most unlikely source - a friend of mine's father, whom I never in my wildest thoughts think I'd ever met, let alone receive the most life changing news from. He treated me out to a $100 lunch and some wine, the first glass of wine I’ve ever had, and then followed up with a job offer (which isn’t the good news; the good news I actually can’t divulge here). Incidentally, I don’t see what the big excitement is over wine. [...]

AFRICAN AID

A classmate of mine sent out the following message: To friends and colleagues in the US, Some of you might know that I'm doing my dissertation work on a study of former child soldiers in northern Uganda with my partner, Jeannie. As a consequence of our work, we have met some truly incredible youth affected by the war, each of whom has tremendous potential but no means to even attend secondary school or earn a living. We've helped out where we can financially, but our goals are bigger [...]

BENCH MARX (PLEASE)

BENCH MARX (PLEASE) What the hell is Paul Krugman trying to say about income inequality? Graduates Versus Oligarchs By PAUL KRUGMAN New York Times Ben Bernankes maiden Congressional testimony as chairman of the Federal Reserve was, everyone agrees, superb. He didnt put a foot wrong on monetary or fiscal policy. But Mr. Bernanke did stumble at one point. Responding to a question from Representative Barney Frank about income inequality, he declared that "the most important factor" in rising inequality "is the rising skill premium, the increased return to education." Thats a fundamental misreading [...]

GEORGE BUSH DOES NOT CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE, WARNINGS, OR LITTLE KITTENS

GEORGE BUSH DOES NOT CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE, WARNINGS, OR LITTLE KITTENS Is that guy on the far right seriously hired to just hold up Bush's executive seal? Oops, I did it again: Speaking by video link from a room in his Texan holiday ranch on 28 August last year, Mr Bush is shown telling officials: "We are fully prepared". He does not ask any questions as the situation is outlined to him. Along with the video, AP obtained transcripts of seven days of briefings relating to Katrina. The footage does the president [...]

THE SWEET TASTE OF FREEDOM

THE SWEET TASTE OF FREEDOM Freedom Cream. Is it just me or are conservatives way better at marketing themselves ? Who cares about stupid squirrel childrens books when you can eat a big scoop of Ara-Fat Free? Liberals seemingly suck at everything. They should expand their line to include "Abramoff Crookies and Cream," "Gays CantElope," "Maple Out Never," and "Nutty Banana Bush." I wonder if they have organic vegan versions packaged in recycled materials.

THE N-WORD AS A BRAND NAME

Damon Wayans is out to trademark the term "N*gga" for a clothing line and retail store he's starting: The actor Damon Wayans has been engaged in a 14-month fight to trademark the term "Nigga" for a clothing line and retail store, a search of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's online database reveals. Wayans wants to dress customers in 14 kinds of attire from tops to bottoms, and use the controversial mark on "clothing, books, music and general merchandise," as well as movies, TV and the internet, according to his applications. But, so far, [...]

PUTTING IT DOWN ON TOILET SEAT ETIQUETTE

Should men leave a toilet seat up or down after use? This paper uses an economic analysis on efficiency and aggragated inconvenience to conclude that men should just leave it in current resting position of their last use. In fact, it is not obvious why there should be a presumption that men are expected to leave the toilet seat down after use. In this paper, I investigate whether there is any justification for the down rule based on economic efficiency. I find that the down rule is inefficient unless there is large asymmetry in the inconvenience costs [...]

SQUIRRELY COMPARISONS

SQUIRRELY COMPARISONS Mommy should get your ass some pants. Someone made a childrens book called "Why Mommy is a Democrat." It reads like a Maoist PRC propaganda poster collection, but with squirrels (although, if you look at the right angle, Mao also looks like a squirrel). This is possibly the dumbest, most disingenious thing I've seen that conflates and confuses everything under the sun. Basically it's what Democrats need. My belief in democracy wanes every year. Update: A Bush supporting squirrel ? [...]
