Thanks to Sasquatch! Music Festival and other pressing issues, I missed last weeks crop of new releases, headlined by My Morning Jacket and Death Cab For Cutie ( and Robert Pollard, and Eddie Vedder on the ukelele, and Seapony, and...). For the past two days, I've been down with a fever, so this week's was in peril too, but I've switched my tea for coffee, propped myself up with some pillows and made a go of it. All because this is a great week for releases. Black Lips, Cults, Fucked Up, Tom Vek, Battles, Arctic [...]
Eric Bachman of Archers of Loaf at Sasquatch -- photo by me One of the best bit of news coming out of the Sasquatch! 2011 wake was that the reunited Archers of Loaf were continuing their tour (already got my tix for their Seattle date in September), and that their catalogue would get the reissue treatment on Merge Records . I guess that explains guitarist Eric Johnson's fashion choice at Sasquatch!. [...]
The final recap and batch of photos from Sasquatch! Music Festival 2011 is now up over at Bumpershine . Plenty of shots from the Archers of Loaf reunion extravaganza, Flaming Lips, Yeasayer, Beach House, Sam Roberts, Black Joe Lewis, Fitz & the Depressions, Moondoggies, Wheedle's Groove and more. I don't know about you, but my back's aching from just recounting it all.
My Morning Jacket's latest release, Circuital , hit the shelves last week while I was delinquent in my 'new releases' post, so lets give the release some love. It ain't no Z , but still worthy of the words 'return to' following the slightl disappointment of Evil Urges . Other items of not this week: Letterman is celebrating the first ever (and, I'm going to predict, last) Drum Solo Week, featuring some of music's best skin pounders. [...]

Wolf Parade play to a packed main stage, mid-afternoon. Day 2 photos and recap is finally up over at Bumpershine . I know it's late, but I've been BUSY. Job interviews, crisis at my kid's school, Doe Bay Festival lineup announcement party to attend -- I've got to be one of the busiest cats on unemployment right now.
Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters at Sasquatch!, May 27, 2011 The 10th Sasquatch! Music Festival happened this past weekend, and I was there with a long and expensive (rented) lens on a starter SLR camera... like monster truck wheels on a Honda Civic. The first day was really just the night, with the reunited Death From Above 1979 and headliners the Foo Fighters (pictured above). Anyway, you can read and peruse the first batch of photos over at Bumpershine .
Foo Fighters play the 2011 MTV Movie Awards In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King. Not to say the Foo Fighters are metaphorically one-eyed, but their scheduled live performance at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards is not the norm for this column. Having seen them perform again just this past Friday night at Sasquatch! (I took the photo above from it), I can say that the Foos are unapologetic pros at this live music thing. Dave Grohl has this thing down pat. [...]
Repeat city... catch up on what you missed or get outside and do something. Heading into the holiday (re: Sasquatch!) weekend, this week's crop may not have much for year end lists, but it's still deep in worthy releases. Of note are the latest from David Bazan, White Denim, Art Brut, Sonic Youth, Joseph Arthur, Foster the People, Nat Baldwin, The Men, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry and two, count 'em two releases from drone metal purveyors Boris. Playlist: New Releases 05.24.11 David Bazan - Strange Negotiations [...]
Four years ago, Justin Vernon holed up in his father's cabin out in the woods of Wisconsin and poured his broken heart into the eight songs of For Emma, Forever Ago , the debut for the outfit known as Bon Iver. By 2008, when Jagjaguwar picked it up for release, that album went on to achieve incredible success, the kind of success that creates a fair bit of pressure on the follow-up. But if For Emma set an unbelievably high bar for their self-titled sophomore release coming [...]
Still a lap behind after last week's Blogger shutdown -- why couldn't it have happened this week? It's not the greatest crop of releases, but it's worth sniffing the latest collaboration from Danger Mouse (with Daniele Luppi), 13 & God, Damon & Naomi, Chad VanGaalen, The Elected Mai Doi Todd, Moby, NRBQ and a slew of remastered reissues from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Playlist: New Releases 05.17.11 Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi - ROME [...]
For all the grief I sometimes give Chuck , they sure know how to do finales. "Vs the Cliffhanger" rolled all the best parts about this fourth season into one epic package. The Buy More took a backseat, for the most part, but with the Spy and family worlds pretty much merged now, it's becoming less noticeable when they disappear. Chuck got their season 5 renewal recently (to be their last), and thank God, because there's a STORY that needs to be told/seen. The [...]
Fleet Foxes play Fallon on Friday, May 20 There's just enough advanced warning to grow your beards and dig out your flannel, as later this week on Fallon there's a NW beard folk double feature, with The Head and the Heart on Wednesday and Fleet Foxes on Friday, the latter of which we're more excited for. Last week, we went into how great FF's latest, Helplessness Blues , is, and now they're finally on the tube stateside to play it live. Elsewhere, TV on the [...]

Thanks to the Bloggerpocalypse that occurred earlier this week, this nearly finished post was lost forever when Blogger reverted back, jettisoning out over 30 hours worth of posts/comments . The work that was published has mostly been brought back, but, as in my case, drafts were lost or reverted back, losing all updates. Too bad, to, as this was a pretty deep week for releases, one that deserves attention. Between releases from Okkervil River , Man Man , The Antlers , Sloan , Sam Roberts Band , The Felice Brothers , [...]
I hope that the song "Friday" is not going to be a staple at high school proms occurring this month. Can you imagine looking back at your prom and remembering that tripe? I had thankfully avoided the song the first time it made the rounds via YouTube sharing, but was forced here to take in the middle school poetry. Worst. Lyrics. Ever. That it was sandwiched in between two great renditions ("Isn't She Lovely" and "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance") only made it harder [...]
Haven't touched the past few Chuck episodes for a few reasons, first being a certain lack of interest. But since we're approaching another season finale, it was time to play catch up, as Chuck has been 2 for 3 on their finales thus far, so there's hope that they pull it together after dancing all season around their network orders for episodes. Last week, the reveal of Vulkoff as Agent X and bringing in Ellie into the inner circle set things up nicely [...]
Okkervil River play Letterman on Friday, May 13. After taking a year off to back and collaborate with the legendary Roky Erickson, Okkervil River is thankfully back with a new album of literate Americana -- I Am Very Far , out Tuesday. As is usually the case, Will Scheff's printed lyrics are as big of a draw as the delivered music, with his finely tuned dark tales full of wit and subtext. But with [...]

We have saying in Seattle that you may have heard before: "April showers bring May showers." Much like it was in April, it's raining new releases this week, with Seattle faves Fleet Foxes and the return of Beastie Boys heading the list. Also of note this week are new releases from Architecture in Helsinki , Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys , Small Sins , Priscilla Ahn , Cheeseburger and a live album from Brandi Carlile Playlist: New Releases 05.03.11 [...]
Twin Shadow (George Lewis Jr) makes network TV debut on Fallon (Thursday, May 5) Twin Shadow, a.k.a. George Lewis Jr., is a poetic re-imagining of 80s New Wave, with ever present hints of Morrissey, Depeche Mode and Echo & the Bunnymen. Produced by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor, Twin Shadow's 2010 debut ( Forget ) was a year-end list favorite and their national TV debut this week couldn't come soon enough. On Thursday, Lewis & Co. will likely be performing the [...]
