Niza is a Spanish band formed by Silvia (vocals, keyboards, programming) and Roberto (guitar, programming). Elefant Records describes their music as being "classy, sophisticated pop influenced by Brazil and France sixties". Niza - Parasol Lots of audio samples on the Elefant site . And be sure to watch their videos as well. Very Sixties-cool! Don't you want their wardrobe and props?
Typewriter is Singapore's very own indie Supergroup, with members hailing from iconic local bands like The Oddfellows, Sherene's Closet, Plainsunset and Electrico! Typewriter - Enemy The chorus is a real foot-tapper! More on the band in this interview here .

Tonight's musical evening at Alliance Francaise was a weird mix of varied genres. It started off with Moods, a band whose guitar and bass section rocked, but vocals sounded very muffled. It didn't help that the singer just stood stiffly there singing with her eyes closed. Luckily their set wasn't too painfully long, maybe cos I was psyched up since up next was Serenaide! Whee. I was expecting the auditorium to be at least half full, having seen their crowds of supporters at the Esplanade before, and especially considering they were featured in ST Life! just yesterday! But that wasn't [...]
FETE DE LA MUSIQUE brought to you by Alliance Francais Date: 18 June 2005 Venue : Alliance Francais Time: 6pm onwards Bands: Moods, Serenaide , Tini & The Musicbox, Delfin Colome, Le Groupe hmm. I wonder if any of the other bands will sing in French?

By request, here is What About by The Sugarflies . The Sugarflies were made up of June Koh and Stella Tan. They were prominent in the Singapore local music scene in the mid 90s, with their melodic indie pop. They were actually the first local band I ever saw live, in 1998 when I was 15. They released one amazing album, "And That's Why" and contributed to several local movie soundtracks ("Teenage Textbook" and "Mee Pok Man") before disbanding when they went abroad to study. A pity because they were young (performing while in secondary school) [...]
Ivy - Be My Baby Dominique Durand's soft, accented vocals (she's native Parisian) turns this cover version into a beautiful yet haunting lullaby. My favourite track of Ivy's fourth album, Guestroom. Ivy, by the way, is Adam Schlesinger's other band besides Fountains Of Wayne. You can't pinpoint their 'type' of sound. In some of their earlier albums, you could tell that Ivy's sound is as different from FOW's as can be - more lounge in feel, with Guestroom as a good example. However, their new album, In The Clear seems a lot [...]
Hot Hot Heat's newest single - Goodnight Goodnight
Stereo Total - Orange Mecanique
I just saw Serenaide live at the Esplanade. Happiness!! They sounded just as perfect as their cd. Indie pop at its coolest. And they looked pretty spiffy too in thier matching preppy outfits. I am so in love with them. I didn't bring my camera, cos whenever I bring my camera to gigs I always get too stressed over taking photos and miss out on savouring the music. Not that I take fantastic pics anyway lah. Ramble ramble since it's past midnight and I'm dead tired. Ok, next Serenaide gig: 5 February @ [...]

I have been so obsessed with this song since I first heard it at the record store. And a whole host of gigs are lined up to promote the album too. Quick, go here to pre-order the cd. Serenaide - Girl [...]

MODCENTRIC = Looking at the world through the rose-coloured glasses of 60s culture and style Modcentric was just a word I thought of one day as a title for my personal (now defunct) website in 2001. I was mugging History and ' Ethnocentrism ' was a word that stuck in my head. Apt, since I put my love for all things 60s at the center of everything! The 1995 Beatles Anthology tv series made me a Beatlemaniac, but my fondness for 1960s Singapore music began a few years later when I discovered that my late [...]
