Blog: Through It All

Justin Trawick

I got an email from a nice young artist named Justin Trawick the other day asking me to review his music. I haven't updated this in a while, but I thought I'd give this one a shot. Now this isn't the kind of thing I'll be listening to daily, but for what it is, it's good. For fans of Jack Johnson, that kinda college sit-around-a-bon-fire on the beach thing, it's good. It brings Ben Taylor(you know, James Taylor's kid?) to mind. If that's your cup of tea, check out Justin Trawick.

Brand New Brand New

Damn it's been a while since I've been on here. I've since gone to college, but I've finally got a break to update. So what have I been listening to? Well, I'm not really sure how to refer to it. I used to call "Your Favorite Weapon" as old Brand New and "Deja Entendu" as new Brand New, so I guess "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me" is brand new Brand New. Anyway, whatever you might call it, Brand New's new album is a great step forward for the band. They've matured and drawn from much [...]

Lupe Fiasco

I don’t usually cover rap or hip-hop but I’ve been listening to Lupe Fiasco’s new album a lot recently, and I definetly think it’s worth a mention. If you don’t recognize the name, you may recognize his rhymes from Kayne West’s recent hit “Touch The Sky.” His new album, Food and Liquor, will be in stores this August. Until then, let Kick Push tide you over. It’s about skateboarding. Not rims, bitches, or blunts. Refreshing.

Johnny Whitney speaks about new Blood Brothers album

Johnny Whitney of the Blood Brothers recently spoke to MTV about their upcoming album. Here’s some of what he said: “I tried to take a very different approach on the lyrics for this record,” said Whitney. “I actually wrote the majority of the lyrics during that Coheed and Cambria tour we were on last fall. With Crimes, there were certain things that were weighing on me â€" political issues â€" and the presidential election was in the not-so-distant future. I wanted to try to address that in a sort of direct and poignant way. But with this record, I [...]

The Jonbenet live video

Pluto Records has posted a live video of the Jonbenet performing the track Devils. It’s a cool video, so I thought you all might like to check it out.

Posehn

Alright, this post is only about half music, but that’s alright, because Brian Posehn is funny as hell. In case you don’t know who he is, he was great on the short lived Comedians of Comedy, where he toured the country with Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis, and Maria Bamford. He was also a regular on the Mr. Show, and has been on Comedy Central many times. Anyway, the point is he was signed to Relapse Records, and now has a video out for his metal spoof “Metal By Numbers”. I’d suggest this to any metal, hardcore, or screamo fan [...]

more Postal Service

I’ve been listening to a lot of The Postal Service recently. I’m not sure why, but I can’t say it’s a bad thing. So one of the my favorite tracks they’ve done isn’t a track they wrote. Actually it’s a song written by Phil Collins. I know, I hate Phil Collins too. I’m not gonna deny that The Postal Service did it well though, because they turned something I hate into something I love, and that’s worth something… right? So with that, check out Against All Odds

CSS...and I'm not talkin' 'bout style sheets

This was on Pitchfork Media a few days ago, and I just can’t help myself. It’s way too much fun to not post. And the Death From Above 1979 shout out? Yea, it’s fucking awesome. So why did I mention CSS? Well, that’s who is responsible for the track Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above . It’s cheesy as hell, but I promise you should listen to it. Put everything aside for a moment and just enjoy a great catchy song. By the way, it stands for Cansei De Ser Sexy.

The Lovekill

The Lovekill is the latest signing to one of my favorite labels, Eyeball Records. Having recently heard them for the first time, I think Eyeball labels have made a strong choice. The Lovekill remind me of The AKAs(you know that band Mike from Brother’s Keeper is in now?). Anyway, this is band makes punk rock fun, and I think they deserve some attention, so check out their track Sleepover

Alexisonfire sign to Vagrant

Alexisonfire recently signed to Vagrant Records, where they’ll release their upcoming album “Crisis.” They’ll be joining bands such as The Bled, Moneen, and From Autumn To Ashes. It seems to follow the hardcore signing trends of Vagrant. Anyway, here’s a track from their last Equal Vision record. This is No Transitory .

Exit the King

Now that I’m working a job it’s a little harder to update daily, but no worries, this site isn’t going to die. I’m always listening for new music. This mp3 was submitted to me by Exit the King. I’m always happy to hear a good band trying to get their music out there, so I thought I’d share with you this brutal to mellow to brutal track Carthorse . It’s reminds me a bit of the “Irony Is A Dead Scene” EP from Dillinger. If you were a fan of that, definetly check out Exit The King.

Attitude

With a new album “We All Go Down Together” recently released by 1917 Records, Attitude seem to be on the top of their game. Their sound is a combination of classic old school hardcore with the post-punk/hardcore style of bands like the Bronx or Please Mr. Gravedigger. This track, More Than A Mouthful , can be found on their latest release.

Dntel and Ben Gibbard

The last Postal Service post put me in a Postal Service kind of mood, so I thought I’d go dig up that very first Postal Service track ever. Actually, it’s not even the Postal Service, it’s Jimmy Tamborello’s project Dntel, featuring Ben Gibbard. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, so enjoy the nostalgia, but if you haven’t, then please don’t miss out, and check it out right now. This is The Dream of Evan and Chan from the Dntel album, “Life Is Full Of Possibilites”

Smoke and Smoke

I posted a little while ago about the Murder City Devils’ reunion show. That brought me to finding out what these guys are up to now. I already knew about Triumphs of Legthargy Skinned Alive (takes a breath) to Death, who I can’t say I love exactly, but Spencer Moody must have some good music left in him, right? And yes, yes he does. Smoke and Smoke is another project of his. Against the Machine is one of the songs that can be found on their their official site .

Where are all the mp3s?

I know, it’s been a little while, and I appologize, but seriously, I’m not dead. So anyway, here’s a little treat for any fans of both The Flaming Lips and the Postal Service. This is the Postal Service’s remix of the Flaming Lips’ Do You Realize .

New Weatherman Records

Ferret Records announced a few days ago that they have started their first imprint, New Weatherman Records. “We’re proud to announce that our lengthy relationship with Nick Storch has resulted in Ferret’s first label imprint â€" New Weathermen Records. Nick has spent years booking some of the best up and coming bands and New Weathermen Records is a natural extension of that. NWR’s first signing is San Jose, CA’s own Heavy Heavy Low Low. Their New Weathermen debut, ‘Everything’s Watched, Everyone’s Watching’, hit streets Sept 19th!” Their first signing, Heavy Heavy Low Low, bring a sound like Fear Before [...]

defcon4

A quick request. If your club/venue gets to be than say… 100 degrees, you MUST get an airconditioner. The only reason I bring it up is the because of the show I saw yesterday. I went to see one of my favorite local bands, I Am Disaster , reunite for one night. I ended standing outside the venue the entire show until the band played because it was just too hot. So let’s say you take a maybe a dollar from every ticket sold, go to buy an air conditioner, and slam it in the window. I promise it’d [...]

This Will Destroy You

And I’m back into the blogging swing of things. After that few day lapse, I should be back on track, so be sure to check back for more great music and news. Anyway, for now I have This Will Destroy You, an instrumental quartet somewhat similar to the sounds of Mogwai. Their latest album “Young Mountain” was released on Magic Bullet Records recently, which is where you can find the track The World Is Our ____ . Good stuff to mellow out and wind down to.

Those Transatlantics

Remember that band I posted about a while, Lullatone? Well Those Transatlantics are like the english lullatones. No wait, they’re the electronic Tilly and the Wall. No, wait, they’re the Postal Service with more gutiar and more girls. Ah, forget it, why don’t you just go listen to the track and see what you think. I think it’s a lot of fun. This one’s called Boys and Children, Sing for Summer (my appologies for it not working on the flash player. the mp3 works fine, something about the URL though). Be sure to check out their [...]
