Over the past few months my live show going has really fizzled. There was a time when I would hit two or three shows a week without fail, but these days it seems like an achievement to make it to a few a month. With other obligations and a waning desire to stand in crowds only to be disappointed by a mediocre band on stage I have faded into the twilight of my show going days. Hopefully the free summer season will recharge my batteries, though it would certainly help if there were some more engaging bands out there that [...]

Who : Band of Horses Title : Infinite Arms Label : Columbia Records Thoughts : Would it be cruel to call Band of Horses the Stone Temple Pilots of indie rock? We don't think so. Like STP did more than a decade ago, Band of Horses ride in on the coattails of a burgeoning musical movement. They do so with the right mix of that aesthetic, mixed [...]

Tonight at Pianos in NYC, Cale Parks' new band Brahms will hit the stage for the first week of their three week Pianos residency. Over the course of the next three Tuesdays, Brahms will attempt to wow and woo you as bands like Passion Pit and others have during their own residencies at Pianos. They've also loaded these three nights with supporting talent worthy of their own headlining slots! You can check out all of those details below, but before we get [...]

I was there… Well I was probably a few months off, and I definitely didn't dance. But when I first heard "Losing My Edge" I was really there. I was young but early exposure to the Velvet Underground catalog made it so hard to listen to anything with fresh ears. But here he was, the voice of the obsolete aesthete of low culture and punk. The cultivator of micro-genres. He had it all and he used it. Here we are the better part of a decade later and the pissing contest might have new rules but [...]

Who : Wolf Parade Title : Expo 86 Release Date : June 29th Label : Sub Pop Thoughts : Five years ago when we began this whole music blogging endeavor we were thrilled and wowed by the state of indie rock. Slowly but surely a genre that had been dominated by nerds and geeks had started to transcend its left of [...]
Monday: Mumford & Sons + The Middle East @ Music Hall of Williamsburg 8pm $20 [ tix ] Looking over the show listings for this week it seems like this may just be the calm before the storm. We are a week away from the unofficial start to summer and the swarm of free, exciting shows it brings to New York, and all this week seems to suffer for it with a lighter array of bands than normal. Tonight we have two bands I have yet to take any [...]
Nika & Rory is the latest outlet for Nika Roza Danilova – better known under the moniker Zola Jesus – and her musical partner Rory Kane to spread their gothly welcoming joy to anyone willing to listen. The duo dropped this brand new single entitled "I'm Not Going Anywhere," a powerful number that takes a poppier spin than most of the material that can be found on Zola Jesus' Stridulum EP from earlier this year. Danilova's strong vocal presence can easily be described as intoxicating; matched with [...]

Is this supposed to be irony? Why is it all of a sudden cool/popular to cover Peter Gabriel ? Whatever the reason we have recently been inundated with Peter Gabriel meets the indie world news and we're a bit confused by it all. It started with Gabriel's own album of covers, Scratch My Back , which included melancholy covers of tunes by Bon Iver , Arcade Fire , Radiohead , and The Magnetic Fields [...]

I realize I have been a bit flaky in the past whenever I have "promised" a monthly series of shows. Laziness is an innate aspect of my personality, but I am pleased to announce today a Pop Tarts Suck Toasted showcase for the second month in a row! That's a start and we're hoping to keep things going for at least a few months in a row (we already have a June date!). After last month's truly fun times at Glasslands we are moving to a slightly more intimate space this month (and next month) in Greenpoint's [...]

Since wowing us at SXSW 2009, we have patiently waited for Janelle Monae's talents to truly translate to a record. 2007's Metropolis Suite I of IV was a good start, but the short playing nature of the EP kind of held back a talent that is impossible to deny. Next week she drops The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III of IV) and the record is already blazing a trail wherever it lands after its early arrival to the web last week. Here's what we have to say about each tune on the record... 1. "Suite [...]

All this weekend the Deli Magazine will be celebrating their 5th anniversary with shows throughout Brooklyn. On Friday night the big show is April Smith and the Great Picture Show headlining at Brooklyn Bowl , and today we are pleased to be giving away a pair of tickets to that show. April Smith has been building up a lot of steam lately thanks to their terrific release Songs from a Sinking Ship . If you've yet to check it out it's pretty [...]

In a week dominated by the deafening noise of Sleigh Bells your ears may need a little break from the deafening volume of the buzz band of the moment. To that end we present Sunglasses , a sweet Savannah based band recently relocated to Brooklyn. This dream-pop duo has the makings of yet another buzz band dujour, similar to the trippy sounds of another Brooklyn dream-pop duo gone huge MGMT. Now to liken a band to a mega successful act like MGMT may seem a bit daunting, but these guys aren't just coping [...]

If you've been following the site lately you should already be very aware of Shark? and my affinity for what I feel is one of New York's best new bands. These dudes swing and sway in ways that I have made abundantly clear over the past year or so, but now the Kevin Diamond of Shark? has branched out to create a side project called Hombres Nombres . In March the band released their first EP, Ugly Fetus Mistook For A Bear [...]

With a debut album and a few 7" releases via Woodsist and Captured Tracks under their belts, Ganglians has been able to establish themselves as a pack of fresh-faced, lo-fi leaning aggressors. Hailing from Sacramento, Ganglians are a scene of their own. We were first introduced to this new single entitled "My House" in late February apart of their Daytrotter session, but below, you can find a recently released demo version of the track recorded back [...]

Inspiration is a sly mistress. No one knows just where it comes from, yet suddenly you are besieged by the feeling and cannot overcome it without acting on every impulse it demands of you. Perhaps no band has fully understood the full extent inspiration demands more so than Pink Floyd. Their muses were so thoroughly demanding that it drove one member to madness and the two most high profile ones (Roger Waters and David Gilmour) to part company permanently when they didn't see eye-to-eye on what their muses wanted. While Roger Waters has spent the past [...]

Vanilla as a flavor (and as a euphemism for a certain taste of art or personality) is underrated. There is something about a clean, solid, reliable, and singular taste that often is far more satisfying than all the bells, whistles, hyphens and sprinkles you can add to a sound or a sundae. Many people have found the National with their steady tempos and low melodic range to be too vanilla (or in the case of our editor often outright boring). I however have always marveled at their particular flavor of indie rock. This is plain guy rock that [...]

Late last night the indie music world got to share a collective moment for the first time since Radiohead's In Rainbows was released to the world at the same time. Somewhere around midnight here on the east coast Sleigh Bells dropped their highly anticipated debut album Treats on iTunes and moments later Twitter and other social networking sites were aflutter with mentions of the album and its face melting capabilities! Indeed, after a late night listen I was jacked and wound up not able to sleep till I had rocked through the album three times. Part [...]
Amazingly, I was flipping through channels the other night and came across this music video on mtvU . Who knew any of MTV's channels were still showing music videos? Well they are apparently and because of seeing this I have spent a good part of the last few days renewing my love of The Go! Team . It feels like ages since we last heard from these dudes, three years no new tunes, no new news, and I suppose nothing forthcoming any time soon. Which is a shame because their [...]

Who : The Dead Weather Title : Sea of Cowards Label : Third Man Records Thoughts : While we all patiently wait for Meg White to get back to playing the drums we are left to fill our need for blues tinged rock with Jack White's other projects - The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. While they aren't quite what we look for in The White [...]

One of the best monthly parties in the cities, Fader's One Step Beyond series, returns to the Museum of Natural History this month with special DJ sets from Passion Pit and the Activaire DJ's. Always a party, this month's installment is sure to get your feet moving and your body sweaty! We're excited to be able to give away a pair of tix to this month's event, which normally would set you back $25. [...]
