12-inch '80s Part II

12-inch '80s Part II More 12-inch cuts from the eighties. I’m still having fun with this compilation, so much so that I’m considering going back to Virgin and purchasing volume 2. Here are a couple of tracks from the second disc. Talk Talk â€" “Its Your Life (U.S. 12” mix)” (MP3) Arguably one of the better pop songs of the eighties that turned into an even bigger pop song of the Y2K’s as a result of No Doubt’s cover version that went on to [...]

12-inch '80s

12-inch '80s Sorry for the lack of updates the past week. With both the long holiday weekend looming along with some Ezarchive problems, posting any type of new content has been difficult. So I thought I'd start with a rare Saturday post with some fun tracks from the 80's, the decade of the 12-inch remix. I picked up this compilation the other night while killing time in the Virgin Megastore before a 7:00 pm showing of Superman Returns. Not only was it on sale but it also contained a bunch of songs that made [...]

Pastry Heros "Horn Rim Fury" EP

Pastry Heros "Horn Rim Fury" EP Here’s a band who have gone through more name changes than any other group in recent memory. Starting off as contributors to the "Beautiful Noise" scene, Adam and Catherine Cooper fronted the aptly named Alison’s Halo before turning around and reemerging as the Bacharach-influenced Pastry Heros . That lasted for one EP before the duo picked up and moved to Chicago and formed Kitten Factor for a couple of singles before finally settling on Insta for its one LP, Checklist For Love . The [...]

Glide EP

Glide EP A very quick post today as I’m trying to finish up some stuff here at work before flying out to L.A. later on this evening. I stumbled across this last night while restocking the piles of CDs I had laying around my apartment and figured it was worth a mention, albeit short. Released in 1995, the Glide EP, from what I recall, was the only release from this band of the same name, an Indianapolis outfit that pretty much sounded like every other band coming out of the Chicago/Indianapolis by way of Champagne-Urbana, IL scene at that time. [...]

Hot Chip "The Warning"

Hot Chip "The Warning" Like most artists nowadays, Hot Chip continues to blur that line between dance and indie music. I’m thinking of groups like LCD Soundsystem, the Postal Service and Decoder Ring. However, on their latest release, The Warning , Hot Chip almost seem to be more in favor of the dance element in the same way their 2004 album, Coming On Strong , was in favor of the indie facet. I’ve been digging the new album as all the dub beats and steel drums still play in all the right spots though [...]

Follow The Train

Follow The Train I’m a little late posting this week due to a problem over at Blogger.com that has kept activity on several blogs to a minimum. I hope this isn’t a sign of the server being on its last legs but time will tell. I might have to find a new home. In any event, since we’re already looking at Tuesday, Part IV of the Adrian Borland story will once again have to wait, probably until Monday. In the meantime, I’ll continue with my reviews of all the excellent albums that seemed to have [...]

Friday Singles

Friday Singles Here are two singles I’ve been listening to a lot the past couple of days. It’s the summer weather we’ve been having that works in their favor, especially first thing in the morning. I believe Black Fras’ "Moving Into Light" came out sometime last summer but I think only on a compiliation album. I could be wrong but in any case, I’m just arriving to the party on this wonderfully catchy tune. I love the beat on this, especially on the original mix. Here’s the radio edit version but the whole EP can be found here . [...]

Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura Have you gone out and picked up the new Camera Obscura album, Let’s Get Out of This Country , yet? What’s that, you say? You haven’t? By all means, don’t let me keep your ears from experiencing this great little pop record. I might even enjoy it more than Underachievers Please Try Harder but I’m not quite ready to make statements like that. What I am ready to state is that what Camera Obscura does, which is write wonderfully catchy twee-chamber pop type songs, they do extremely well. The band has bot strengthened and broadened [...]

Mojave 3

Mojave 3 A lot of new releases have seen the light of day the past couple of weeks, many of which I’m just beginning to digest. One of these is the new album by Mojave 3 , a band I’d pretty much given up on after their 2000 release, Excuses for Travellers left me feeling kind of “eehh” after the greatness of 1998’s Out of Tune , an album that really knocked me out and that I played to death. Ever since picking it up [...]

Herbert

Herbert A nother “summer-weather” type of album that I picked up last week but have only really just started to get into the past couple of days is Herbert’s , Scale . Very infectious with its 60’s style soul-disco grooves that are effectively backed by an electronic beat. Add the beautiful string-horn arrangements along with those sexy female vocals and you’re left with an album that has had me bopping my head up and down throughout the whole train ride into work. [...]
