Last night an old friend of mine, Seth Pfannenschmidt (he's also a musician) went out to Andyman's to catch Megan Palmer and The Black Swans. When we showed up we found out that there were two other folks on the bill, singer/songwriter Steve Shanks (aka Timid Blue) and Mark Turns, a spoken word "artist". Apparently, it was Mark Turns' CD release party, although no one but Mark really knew anything about that. Anyway, we ran into the inimitable Robert Duffy and another donewaiting.com writer, Ben Chenowith and had a pretty damn good time. [...]
I know many of you will be reading this in 2008, but I promise this was posted in 2007. These are the Top 15 songs here at ThaBombShelter in 2007. Some I've written about before, others I haven't, others I just discovered this past weekend! Whatever the history between the song and myself, they are all great. Enjoy! #1 - " Gold " Interference Buy I was sitting at work one day when I realized this was the best song of the year. I sent Emily [...]

I love going to shows and I love taking photos at shows. It's often quite a challenge when you're combating a single red light bulb at the back of the stage in a tiny basement rock club (or Christmas lights , for that matter), but it's loads of fun, and tonight I want to take a look at the best photos of 2007 here at ThaBombShelter. APROPOS OF NOTHING "Coconut" Harry Nilsson A Gay angel in the [...]

Well, it's December 26th and I'm finally ready to unveil our Top of the Year lists for 2007. We'll start off with a bang with the Top Eleven of Two Thousand Seven #1- Tie: "In Rainbows", Radiohead & "Octopus", The Bees First off, we've got a tie for the Number One album. I know it's kind of a cop out, but I can honestly say these are the two best albums that were released this year. [...]

It's now the seventh day of UnderCover Week here at ThaBombShelter, and I'm going to spend tonight posting some of my favorite cover songs of all time. I couldn't find the originals to some of them, but I'm going to post them anyway, dammit. Also, you may notice that some of them are reposts from earlier in the week, but I don't care, they're good enough to warrant another mention. Enjoy! "54-46 Was My Number" Toots and the Maytals "54-46-Ball And Chain" Sublime This was [...]

Well, with seven days to post covers, sometimes you have to do a little combining. As such, tonight, we've got covers and originals from two of my favorite artists, Radiohead and David Bowie. So sit back, get some egg nog and a slice of fruitcake and enjoy the tunes! "Creep" Radiohead "Creep" Damien Rice Damien Rice has some amazing pipes, and while he's not quite as phenomenal as Thom Yorke, he at least hits the notes he has to, even if he's not quite as paranoid [...]

So what happens when a contemporary artist covers another contemporary artist? I call it magic. I mean, come on, Iron & Wine covering The Postal Service? Matt Pond covering Neutral Milk Hotel? Nick Cave covering Pulp? All awesome, all happening tonight. "Cubs In Five" The Mountain Goats "Cubs In Five" Eric Metronome This one goes out to my best friend, Pat, purveyor of Before There Was... and longtime Cubs apologist. Just messin'. He hails from Chicago and bleeds Cubby [...]

Hello again. Here it is, the Wednesday before Christmas day, do you have all of your shopping done? I managed to get all of mine done in 2.5 hours, that's gotta be some kind of record. But anyway, as I was dashing from store to store, from one side of the mall to the other, I was thinking about which batch of cover songs to share with you all tonight. It wasn't until I was walking up the steps to our apartment that I decided upon this group from some killer Chansons . Jacques [...]

I apologize that this list is kind of cheating, but that's only because there have been two really great Beatles cover albums released in the past few years. I've still never seen "I Am Sam", but the soundtrack is amazing. In fact, I think Ben Folds' version of "Golden Slumbers" can totally hang with Paul's, no question. The second album most of these songs come from, "This Bird Has Flown" was a tribute to "Rubber Soul" released in 2005. I originally thought that we had Michael Jackson's failing finances to thank for these cover albums (which [...]

You know, when I was listening to this playlist this afternoon, I was struck by just how fun it was. Country covers are a blast, and here I am, sharing them with you. "Georgia On My Mind" Ray Charles "Georgia On My Mind" Willie Nelson "Georgia On My Mind" Taylor Hicks Taylor's version is absolutely great. Now he may be the American Idol winner, but when he recorded this version he was just a soul singer in Alabama. His is still [...]

Hello all, and Merry XXX-Mas from ThaBombShelter. I'm finally ready to unveil my XXX-Mas gift to the world wide webbernets. This first day will require a bit of an explanation, so that's how we'll start. You see, a few weeks ago I was listening to my library on shuffle when I stumbled upon a song that I had never heard, but that was incredibly familiar. That song was "Strangers" as performed by Piebald, from their latest disc, "Accidental Gentlemen". The reason it was familiar was because of the original song's recent inclusion on the [...]
