The Light Is You

Said The Whale - The Light is You
This video for the song "The Light Is You" by Vancouver band Said the Whale speaks to one common desire within all of us: To burst into song with a full band of super hip buddies while picking several bushels of apples. I used to daydream about that for hours as a kid. Said the Whale will be playing a lone date 03-06 in Vancouver, BC at the Biltmore Cabaret. (View a better quality version of this video here ). Be Seeing You

ClassicPrisoner
I don't often make a tribute post when a celebrity dies. It's not a conscious decision, it's just never really occurred to me before. But this week Patrick McGoohan , star and co-creator of the late 60s television series The Prisoner (among many, many other impressive credits ), died at the age of 80. And so I'm posting. The Prisoner has long been one of my favorite and most admired series. This series insisted on questioning and challenging the [...]

Emily Loizeau : L'autre Bout Du Monde

Emily Loizeau - L'autre Bout Du Monde
I don't know French. I can't understand what Emily is saying. But she emotes . Something in the vast swathes of beach, the lilt of her gaze, yes, just there, I can UNDERSTAND HER. I am in her special fairyland place you can only see through rocks with holes in them. I imagine she is saying things made of pure crystalline beauty, with jaw-dropping metaphors that make you re-envision the world. If you know French, do not dissuade me of this notion. ( Thanks to Dianna! [...]

fifty people, one question

Fifty People, One Question: Brooklyn from Crush & Lovely on Vimeo . The people at Crush & Lovely have taken a simple concept and expanded it into a wholly wonderful work of art. One question, fifty different answers, each one unique and revealing. The video above is in Brooklyn, but there are videos for different cities and different questions here , so, GO! Read a comment, leave a comment! Tell them to come to your city and grill you and your friends with questions! It'll be [...]

A Hairy Situation

Dinosaurs and Robots has already expressed the amazement and wonder of this jewelry more beautifully than I could ever manage, so I just want to draw your attention to the fact that someone out there -- Melanie Bilenker , to be exact -- is creating fine, intricate pieces of jewelry using strands of her own hair. And she will be having gallery showings in both Portland, Oregon and London, UK soon. Which means maybe I'll get to see this for myself! (link) : (via)

Ukelele Corner

Orphans [Original, for Beth]
I found this through joyful girl Beth , and it is about keys, and it has a UKELELE, and really, things that have cute girls and keys and ukeleles are made of astonishing amounts of win. So it must be shared. Here, for you lovely Fabulistas: These little metal urchins, void of counterparts, are looking for ways to feel whole. they say that absence makes you fonder but what exactly are you yearning for? "I'll take you in", she said, "There's always room for more." Sung by the charming Kayla [...]

A Very Important Reminder

Of course, if you're chronically checking to make sure you're having a good time every few seconds, you'll probably worry yourself to death, thus canceling out everything you were trying to accomplish. Still, I think a daily reminder that life should be glorious and enjoyable is a Very Fine Idea Indeed. So I'd love to have one of these prints in the house! (link) : (via)

THE ACORN

Crooked Legs by The Acorn from Paper Bag Records on Vimeo . Great animated video for the song "Crooked Legs" by Ottawa band The Acorn . Notice how the fireflies' bodies are energy-saving light bulbs! Also, a special bonus, in the words of band member Rolf Klausener; "I woke up on the morning of December 24th with the urge to drop 12, thirty-second songs inspired by the myriad of friendships and experiences I've been blessed with this year; it's [...]

tir nan og

Tir Nan Og - animated short film directed by Fursy Teyssier
Tir na nOg is a well-known Otherworld in Celtic mythology, in English meaning " The Land of Eternal Youth ." "Tir Nan Og," the video here, is a breathtakingly beautiful animated video short made by French artist (and musician !) Fursy Teyssier . Within the span of four minutes, he explores the concepts of death and dealing with the loss of a loved one gently and tenderly, using barely a word of dialogue. I especially love the sweet way the older woman and young girl interact, and the way the ravens sound as [...]

it's not me, it's you

sdfjsdhgdebgfdfgscghdghjfhgj3694837375689767.3833364456778
When I saw this a few weeks ago linked from Myspace, I thought "should I really post this? Isn't everyone going to see it anyway? I mean, it's linked from Myspace ." But I just watched it again and I realized, everyone SHOULD see it. Everyone should have every possible opportunity to see this video, again and again, because there is colored smoke, and there are giant presents with legs DANCING, and there is a huge tray of sweets, and Lily Allen's wig is dynamite on her, and what a well-constructed SONG! So, better [...]

My Found Family

It's another happy Flickr wednesday, so here's my photo pool favorite of the week: The Museum of Found Photographs . A collection of other peoples' photographs, with often the names, dates and contexts only dimly known, if they are known at all. I like the idea of making an entire photo album from these photographs and making up elaborate stories and names and settings for all the characters: the wacky uncles and the creepy ones , the pet dog who ended up saving your life one winter in Alaska , the fabulously eccentric grandmother [...]

Auld Lang Syne

Auld Lang Syne - Nicki Jaine
One more for the road ahead of you, for the beauteous New Year: may it be filled with joy, with art that touches you, with wonders beyond imagining, with more toast you can shake a stick of butter at, with love that feeds you in the best way possible, and with things that inspire you to your greatest heights. reposted from the fantastic Kyle Cassidy .)

Electric Body

Josephine Baker -2- (1927)
I've been going through a mini-obsession with Josephine Baker lately, so what better way to start the new year than this magnificent dance sequence? I love how everyone in the audience is sitting around totally nonchalant and disinterested while she's dancing her little heart out, but she doesn't even give a damn. She just keeps dancing. So I was reading this examination of Josephine's life here , and I really liked this description: Baker's improvisations transgressed the conventions of choreographed dance; she strung together steps with every appearance of spontaneity. [...]

The Laughing Eyed Flapper

The Laughing Eyed Flapper I've been crazy for all things Flickr lately, so thought I'd try doing a weekly Wednesday photo pool feature--why not? If I'm going to spend hours flipping through other peoples' photos, I may as well share it with you folks! So here's my first pick to eat up several hours of your day: Flappers and the Jazz Era , a group devoted to images from the 20s and 30s and the ladies who made the period so dazzling. Sifting through this collection is like witnessing a critical moment in history play [...]
