For as long as there have been good songs, there have been good bands that are ready and willing to cover these already recorded good songs. Below you will find a collec tion of nifty originals and their covers from nifty bands and their copy cats. Listen to both, see which one you like the most, and then tell me! 'Cause I really want to know! Let's have a discussion about this! Eh? Pioneers [...]
Original Photo by Aubrey Edward Around these days, it seems like people are just slapping their work with the label of "instrumental" in an effort to justify their wordless noise or songs with failed lyrics, just like how we, back in high school art, kept calling the crappiest of our stuff "abstract." But then you stumble onto an outfit like The Octopus Project , a true professional, and realize, despite those label-slappers, all is still well with instrumental music and there are people out there [...]

A large faction of my favorite bands happen to be dead. Broken up. Finito. No longer breathing. This is my tribute to them. Enjoy these songs! Because they're the last of them! Braid 1997-1999 (short-lived I know!) [...]

While listening to the Lovely Feather's Frantic, I wondered what it is that would make an artist come to the conclusion that all that's needed to complete a song is a good "OoOo" chorus of some sort. All the pondering eventually led me to go out and just find these elusive "OoO" songs, and after quite some time and a bit of work, I managed to collar this bunch. After all the work it took, I realized the rarity of all these "oOo" songs, yet just about every time a song implements an "OoO", the finished song turns out great. [...]
Ah it's that (and if you're a gal, that other) time of the month again, if you're not familiar with Bishop Allen's plans for this year, it goes like this - Bishop Allen is a band that hails from Brooklyn, and took a nice hiatus shortly after their debut hit Charm School in order to write their (currently) label-less album Clementines . As that album strolls about waiting for release, they're going to distribute an EP every month - yes, every month. Last month, they released Butterfly Nets - a great ukelele stringed [...]

After eleven years together, Sleater-Kinney is throwing in the towel calling their departure an "indefinite hiatus." A statement by Sleater-Kinney reads: We feel lucky to have had the support of many wonderful people over the years. We want to thank everyone who has worked with us, written kind words about us, performed with us, and inspired us. [...]

Photo Courtesy of Autumn De Wilde So you've got just about every Spoon record by now, these kids, though a comes-and-goes member or two every now and then, have been together and playing music for over decade. What's left to get? Well if you're as enthusiastic as me when it comes to this Austin, Texas gem, then you know the Holy Grail, when it comes to the discography of this band, is none other than the uber-rare Telephono record. I mean, [...]

Happy Fourth to those of you who do celebrate it. Seeing as it's the holiday of heat (at least here in Texas), fireworks, and hot dogs - we're off to go do just that. Both Sides of the Mouth will resume posting again tomorrow, but a nice summer mix might be put up on this post later to hold you out through the holiday. Enjoy the break...

Matt Pond PA is a Philadelphia based band created by ( durr... ) a cool cat by the name of Matt Pond in 1998. With six years of existance, Matt Pond PA consequently has six albums out, the most recently being Several Arrows Later in 2005. All albums are worth checking out, but Emblems is most definitely my favorite (the serene chill song "New Hampshire" comes off of this album). Vocal [...]

I have to give the credit of this wonderous find to Mike at Nothing But Green Lights - the music he suggests sometimes are as awesome as his music streamy thingies. All right, before I start, go ahead and right click the song below and open the tune to play in a new window. Los Campesinos! is a group of rowdy ruffigans based in Cardiff, and just goes to show that those Brits still know how to have fun. I can't put it any better than the group themselves when they describe their music with the [...]
Would I, should I, could I get my alarm clock to wake me up with any tune, without a doubt, I would have it play Young Folks by Peter Bjorn & John softly every morning. Peter Bjorn & John is, simply enough, a trio from IKEA-land (that's Sweden for all of you devoid of that blue and yellow wonder) composed of Peter Morén, Björn Yttling and what their site names as John...from Norrbotten, and you thought Peter, Bjorn & John was a band name they just made up. As you can see from their [...]
All right so the Arctic Monkeys are practically done and over, and the little bands are once again resurfacing from the underground of Britain. Last time it was the bustling buoyancy of Los Campesinos! and their call for you to dance (even though you may not know how the hell to do it), and now here to pick up the pace some more is a four-some from Leeds that go under the name of The Hair . Yes, yes - I'm gonna go out and say that the Hair (to me at least) is a horrendous name for a [...]

Once upon a time, there was a young Duke law student named Stephen Pedersen who aspired to produce big rock. He had his chance touring with bands like Cursive and The White Octave, but poor Stephen still did not have a band to call his own. Thus, he named himself Criteria and wrote his own album, titled En Garde . But Stephen, now Criteria, still needed musicians to play his freshly written songs with him. Enter local musicians recruited from danky basements throughout his native Omaha, and Criteria, the [...]

So I know it's definitely late to jump onto this particular bandwagon, but seeing as how it still has enough drive I'm going to stoke the fire while it's still hot. Tapes 'N Tapes cuts the air with sound waves as a quartet from Minneapolis headed by vocal Josh Grier. Not much more can be said about the band that hasn't already been said by the droves of blogs and periodicals that fiercely wrote about these kids for quite a long while, but here I stand telling you about them using what residual energy is left for the [...]

Hailing from Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Anathallo is a seven-member band using instruments ranging from the guitar to the flugelhorn. With soaring lead vocals by Matt Joynt, happy-go-lucky riffs by lead guitarist, Danny Bracken, and a strong backbone provided by both drummer, Jeremiah Johnson, and bassist, Seth Walker, Anathallo's music is light, pleasant, earthy, and exceedingly creative. All members, also including Andrew Dost on piano and flugelhorn, Bret Wallin on trombone, and Erica Froman on clarinet, contribute to the vocal core of the band that makes Anathallo truly great (just listen to the " ah yeah yeah [...]

Ah, Sweden... They have provided us with Swedish Fish, Ikea, and great indie bands... ... like Shout Out Louds! Although they may not be independent anymore, their music is still as unique and fresh as when they were. This band of five has been a tight knit group of friends ever since they were kids. All natives of Stockholm, Shout Out Louds are currently touring Europe. Damn. Although they have toured in America, no such tour is scheduled as of yet. But do not fret! American tours will soon come, I am sure. As for now, listen to [...]
