When K.J Yesudas started his career in Hindi Film music none would have even imagined that let alone winning the National award all the songs from the film Chitchor would be super hits and would become immortal in film music history! Chitchor had beautiful songs which were sung by virtually non entities of Bollywood in those days namely Yesudas and Hemlatha. Ravindra Jain gave everything to bring life to some of the best remembered songs in the history of Indian Film Music! "Gori Tera", "Jab Deep", "Tujo Mere" all were a class apart. Jain had so much faith in Yesudas [...]

Well this song would surely be the favourite of many music lovers! I had lot of requests for this song and was finally able to get hold of an awesome sounding karaoke track for it almost close to the original. Those who have seen Blackmail would never ever forget this melodious song starring Rakhee & Dharmendra. This was yet another memorable hit from the Kalyanji-Anandji duo. I know that I can never ever be anyway near the magnetic magical voice of Kishoreda but we mortals just try to satisfy ourselves by trying to sing such songs to the best of [...]

It's ONAM once again! Malayalees all over the world celebrate ONAM in the best way that they can wherever they are. Those staying away from their near and dear ones in Kerala do miss the land they were born in and their dear ones. They also miss the many small small things they used to do in their childhood. Childhood memories are cherished by everyone. In those golden yesterday years we had many generations coming together for ONAM and for the children it was time to climb trees, run in the fields, pluck fruits, take a plunge in the river [...]

" Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again." [...]

It's been some time since I posted a Tamil song here. From the moment I heard this song in 1994 it's been in my heart and wanted to learn and sing it some day. Yesterday I decided to give it a go and here is the result A.R.R has been here since Roja and he continues to amaze us with his virtuosity creating heavenly music with a standard of the highest order that he has set apart for himself. With a huge team of some of the best musicians in India, he always amazes us with his creations. His songs [...]

After a long struggle since the past two days, I finally managed to sing and record a song and here is the result. Constant pains and trying to sit on the bed in a comfortable position was the main hinderance. This is a song that I hold very close to my heart. Yesterday was July 31st the death anniversary of Mohd. Rafi. Along with him, July also was the month when we also lost Madanmohan who was an eccentric genius of a composer! The duo of Rafi-Madanmohan has always spelled magic in Bollywood. The film Chiraag had a beautiful song [...]

After a fall from the steps, I am down with a nasty dislocation fracture to my right ankle which in medical terms is called a "Trimalleolar dislocation fracture". This needed surgeries for fixation and correction. It happened on the 5th of this month and will take ample of time to heal. Walking will still take some time since the ankle needs to be fully weight bearing again. Also sitting on the bed and working on the PC, with the plastered leg is quite a tedious job. This post took me 4 days to finish! Recording songs would take some more [...]

It's been a big gap since I posted a song. In fact I had the song ready last week but due to a routing problem my site had vanished from my ISP till today! Strange isn't it? Anyway the wait has been worth. In fact my friend Rama gave me this track some months back. When I heard the track I immediately thought "oh..it would take some time to learn this song". It was a very long and tough song purely based on Carnatic Classical music and that too a [...]

Sachin Dev Burman was born in Comilla, Bengal (now in Bangladesh) in British India. He was born in the royal family of Tripura, and began his training in classical music under his father, sitarist and Dhrupad singer Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman. He later continued his training first under KC Dey, and then Bhismadev Chattopadhaya and Badal Khan. He also acknowledges Ustad Allauddin Khan as one of his gurus. In the early 1930s he made a reputation for himself as a singer of folk and light classical music. (Consequently his film compositions were often influenced by his huge repertory of folk-tunes from [...]

"Vidhyadharan Master" has been doing music in Malayalam Cinema since the 80's. Though he has done very few films, the quality of his music is on par with the other contemporaries of his era like Johnson and Raveendran. He is from the old school of music where melody reigned supreme over cacophony. Almost all his songs have a strong classical base and were of high calibre. Right from "Kalpanthakalatholam", "Nashta Swargangale", "Chandanam Manakkunna", "Vinninte Virimaaril", "Paaduvaanay", "Swapnangalokkeyum" he has kept very high standards for himself. He has not got the accolades that he really deserved and Malayalam cinema has not [...]
Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is a singer in the Qawwali style native to Pakistan and India. Son of Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan and nephew of the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat took over Ustad Nusrat's Qawwali party after his death in 1997, as Nusrat had no sons of his own. Nusrat had taken him under his wing, and trained him in classical music and Qawwali since a very early age. Rahat began performing alongside Nusrat at the age of 10; he can be seen in numerous earlier videos of Nusrat. His voice is high-pitched unlike the booming husky [...]

Pankaj Udhas is the ghazal singer with the golden voice and the darling of the masses whatever critics would say. He has carved his niche in the ghazal scenario with hard work and his God given gift, his golden sweet voice which can be compared to honey. Hard critics always compare him with other present day greats like Ghulam Ali, Hariharan, and Jagjit Singh and say that he lacks innovative singing in his live programs as he does not sing many harkaths. True that his voice would not yield to such gimmicks on the stage, but I believe the voice [...]

The Bharat Bhushan-Nirupa Roy hit, Samrat Chandragupta (1959) was Kalyanji's first film as Kalyanji Virji Shah. It's songs like "Chahe Paas Ho" (Lata-Rafi) are remembered to this day. Followed a few more films alone like Post Box 999 before Anandji who was assisting him, joined him officially to form the Kalyanji-Anandji duo in Satta Bazar and Madari (1959). Chalia (1961) was their earliest major hit. But the Raj Kapoor factor branded them as pale imitators of Shankar - Jaikishan even as 'Dum Dum Diga Diga', Chalia Mera Naam", and "Mere Toote Hue Dil Se" swept the charts. Kalyanji-Anandji's variety-studded music [...]
I felt some glitches in the last post "Akale Akale" and felt that the pitch of the song was not up to the original song..so am changing the pitch of the karaoke..and the song will be back soon...with better feel and punch...sorry for the trouble folks...Your opinions are valuable to me...When u find something missing it's my duty to see to it and get it corrected. M.S Baburaj or "Babukka" as he used to be called by his admirers and friends use to weave magic in Malayalam films in the 60's and the early 70's. He was instrumental in introducing Hindustani music to Malayalam films. He was a genius who paired up with P. Bhaskaran & Vayalar to give some of the most memorable songs of Malayalam Film Industry. He was also an awesome singer himself! When we hear hear his songs in his own voice we realise that many of his sangathis and usages could not be fully implemented by even the great singers. K.J [...]

In 1983 "Moondram Pirai" took the movie buffs by storm! The film directed by "Balu Mahendra" won many awards at the National level including the best actor award for "Kamal Hassan", one of the finest actors India has seen. The film has picturesque locales from Ootty and the romantic mood the film created is still nostalgic. I remember having watched the movie almost 4 times from the theatre! The Hindi remake was also a huge success. The film had heavenly music by "Illaiyaraja" which was another big factor for it's success. All the songs were super hits! The song "Kanne [...]

Wishing you all a very happy Easter! Song: Karuna Roopan Music: Joy Cheruvathur Album: Angel [...]

Some Films and Music never die. They etch an everlasting image in your mind which lingers on for the whole life. Such was the film Shankarabharanam directed by K.Vishwanath which came out in 1979. I still remember the day when I saw the film in "Sapna" Theatre at Trichur. The hall was totally packed. In fact the film was such a blockbuster that it ran for more than 4 or five months in a row with a packed audience! The film saw the return of classical music to [...]
