(photo: Karl Scullin ) Ooooooweeeeeee. It's time for some new Pikelet everybody. 'Pressure Cooker' is a groovin' jam replete with the characteristically scattered vocals of lead, Evelyn Morris. What this Melbourne based four piece does well, is provide 'alt-pop' that goes completely against the grain. As a band that's a staple on community radio, Pikelet who makes you think about the construction of music than what's presented through perceived national tastemakers. Tagged as 'psych pop' on their Soundcloud, it seems 'Pressure Cooker' does exactly that. From the get [...]

'Stray Current', the first single off Baptism of Uzi's upcoming 103 EP, is quite a departure from the band's previous output. These guys have krautrock and hair metal running in their veins - they've supported Can's Damo Suzuki and Neu!'s Michael Rother, and their compositional style is reportedly modelled on early Black Sabbath. The band's previous tracks have names like 'Crushed', 'The Drought' and 'Dead by Dawn'; essentially proggy jams bound together by the towering riffs of guitarists Bojan Stojanov and Tom Battersby. An earlier incarnation of 'Stray Current' saw a release on a 2011 EP; I've got [...]

Australia needs a new pop chanteuse. Preferably one who's not going to splay jazz hands or bore us with sad folk music. We think Seja is probably a good fit for the title. She's interesting, mysterious and isn't really Aussie at all (Seja was born in Germany). After spending years playing synths for Regurgitator and Sekiden, Seja's been a solo venture and is releasing her second record soon. 'Like Fireflies' is the brand new track from Seja's upcoming record All Our Wires . The track is a burst of sonic-pop, fused with Seja's [...]

'Passions' is the first single off the debut record by Melbourne MOR evangelists Montero . Led by Ben 'Bjenny' Montero, whose album art, posters and video clips are by now a fixture of the local music scene - and whose voice has an eerie similarity to Bryan Ferry's - the band includes Chapter Music honcho Guy Blackman on piano and WTH favourite /longtime purveyor of adult contemporary sleaze Geoffrey O'Connor on guitar. Together they make lush, 702s indebted soft rock with kitsch orchestral flourishes. They've got a 73 out already, and a two-track [...]

In case the obvious wasn’t apparent enough - yes, Greyjoy is a Game of Thrones reference. These Perth guys aren’t just a bunch of tv-gruffs though. Their sound is a lot more interesting than horsemeat consumption, the plague or the gratuitous bad sex offered by said reference, so you should probably listen up. A project between Karlin Courtney and Matt Crocket, Greyjoy came around somewhere in between meeting through friends and purchasing a Juno 6 two years ago. Greyjoy definitely have a ‘Sydney’ sound going on. The interwebs makes the state by [...]

Amongst the huge volume of surfer-rock outfits currently pouring out of Geelong, Atolls are leading the pack. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard bass guitarist Lucas Skinner – who you’ll hear on lead vocals here) started Atolls as a side project. After penning couple of demos, he quickly recruited Oli Grinter and Sam Ingles to expand on Atolls' sound. The fuzz-pop trio now have an excellent debut EP Hair Machine in their mitts, which includes scrubbed up versions of previously released demos ‘Water’, ‘Mumble’ and ‘Worn’. From the poppy jolt of ‘Mumble’ to the bolder and [...]

If you're about to head out tonight, you should take a listen to the latest offering from Alex Cameron , (otherwise known as the babe from Seekae ). Having been a fan of Seekae since they first came out, I'm forever obliged to take a listen to whatever comes next from this Sydney based trio. The last we heard from the Seekae boys was the stunning ' Yech ', a mello, down-tempo jam laced with soul-rnb undercurrents. For some, it seemed as though the band departed from +Dome's aesthetic into more of the brooding, [...]

Look at Meg Mac go. Wading in the Murray River with an efficiently taped dress, then having to chase off some dick who thinks he's the fifth member of Mumford and Sons. Other than picking up some Hypem credits (#8) and serious national radio play along the way, Meg Mac is earning some decent brownie from the general collective. She has a great vocal too, so here's hoping the jazz hands/horn section makes a cameo at some stage. Also, if you haven't already stumbled upon this Beyonce cover - make your move. [...]

Here's another rimshot of an excellent band who sound like they were made for better days. Adelaide's The Sunbirds are probably the first 'rock 'n' roll' band I've actually got excited about in what feels like eternity. The word provokes as much dry wrenching as it does enthusiasm. No one wants to be the neo-goth, the barre chord bitch or that band still wearing driver hats shitting lyrics on top of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club chords when clearly, we've all moved on. Leaving the great divide behind though, The Sunbirds are just so fucking great. These [...]

Glad to present to y'all the first look at the new video from the excellent Hollow Everdaze . I caught these kids playing a dim, hole-in-the-wall warehouse party a few weeks ago. Cop searches at most parties I’ve been to have ended in drunk guys throwing lemons at police, people leaving and a general deflation of the mood, but props to Hollow Everdaze for playing right through. The guys were as chill as they are in this clip. If you haven’t heard much material from these guys, this video is a decent [...]

Jenny Broke The Window is definitely one of the more interesting and unconventional band names I’ve come across. Hailing from the South Coast of NSW, the indie-pop outfit’s new single ‘Ravel’ is feverishly catchy - from the bouncy string sample intro to the track's anthemic hook, there's an energy present throughout the entire duration of the song that compels you with giddy desire to skip, dance or do something! The five-piece have crafted a single that continually shifts and evolves. It's a mash-up of musical ideas sewn together ever-so-smoothly, while the production on this is [...]

Courtney from Under The Radar has selected a track from Wellington based musician Joe Blossom this week. This guy epitomizes the modern man half of Fitzroy will never be. He writes lyrics about the cosmos, Dylan Thomas and has a strong aversion to vowels. He also sounds like David Byrne on sedatives if you're vaguely drunk or trying to write about music on 2 hours sleep (wouldn't advise it). Plus, the origins of that lush, grain-fed moustache can only be traced back to NZ anyway. _____ [...]

'Beat It' is the first thing we’ve heard from Brisbane duo Tiger Beams since their incredible (and criminally underexposed) debut album In Your Dreams , which came out in 2011. Plenty of other projects have kept singer/drummer Jesse Hawkins and guitarist Jeremy Neale busy, but it’s still massively exciting to see them back and in fighting form. 'Beat It' comes strutting out of your speakers, dark and tough (even while referencing Willow Smith), with Jesse Hawkins’s spikey, erratic beats starting out front [...]

Image: la Tu'itahi Don't you just love it when Soundcloud suddenly cuts to a track that you actually really dig? Enter this remix by S.F.T , a Kiwi producer signed to Auckland's Renaissance Music . We all know that all NZ urban music puts its Australian equivalents to shame, and this is no different. This remix of fellow Auckland native, Eddie Numbers , is one thumping track that all urban/beat lovers should get on to, pronto (you can take a listen to Numbers' original EP [...]

First birthday parties, hey? Usually reserved for seedy uncles, blow-up castles, and mediocre cameos that somehow entertain the lucky babe to be. Do you remember anything from the space between popping out and entering into 13 years of education at age five? Nope? Glad I'm not the only one. Last weekend Sydney-based label Hand Games celebrated the big 365 in Melbourne, after parties in Sydney and Brisbane earlier this month. I was lucky enough to head down to The Liberty Social and catch a stellar line-up of acts that didn't include Fesbo the Clown, sadly. [...]
