An iTunes Wishlist Here's a running list of things I wish was in iTunes. Inspiration comes mostly from discogs.com who understand what music lovers need & want. I use playlists to add most metadata I need (not just mixtapes, but from where, when I listened to music, what series it came on, covers, etc.). But for the uses below, playlists are weak at best. Label field - I use composer to store which Label a release came from because it is searchable. I've been wanting a dedicated [...]

I've been mostly writing top 10 lists and a few album reviews (so far) at The Big Takeover online. Please take a peak at my Top 10 for 2010 . Also, I've been listing all my articles under the Big Takeover tab above as it is sometimes difficult to find older articles and lists I've written. Filed under: Music
I'm a total fanboy for Parenthetical Girls. I squee at paypal confirmations from Zac. It's a sad state I know but to discover their next album is being released in five parts is a collectors paradise for me (unless I'm one out like I was with the No Age series *sigh*). You can pre-order the first part from their new parentheticalgirls.com . Until then, here is the first video off the first 123 in the series titled "Evelyn McHale", a song that introduces the title character who is known for the most beautiful suicide . [...]

I thought I'd mix things up and get my best albums of the year 2009 out first then work backwards through what I listened to (According to Last.fm). I must say this was an amazing year for music and I plead with my friends who "cannot find anything new to listen to" that they just need to listen around, become an ear slut, do what you have to do to get into all this great music. Partly, this year for me has been a good one in music because I've been sitting at the computer so much after work [...]

Since muxtape left and reincarnated itself for bands, I wanted to share my old 2008 reidmix.muxtape.com with you, it made for good ole-fashioned tapecraft: The Distance ( lala ) by Dntel Head Spins ( mp3 ) by High Places Tane Mahuta ( mp3 ) by The Ruby Suns Man's Heart Complaint ( mp3 ) by {{{SUNSET}}} Seeker of Truth by [...]

Well after 9 months since I first started this post, I decided I should finish it before the year is out. As I'm wrapping up the 2009 songs in my queue, I look back to the coulda-beens of 2008 and how much happiness each band / album gave me. I love this series as it gives me the off the path list of great bands that you may not have heard of from year-end lists. This list is in no particular order and each album occupied my focus for some time during 2008. [...]

Deastro "Keeper's" School of Seven Bells "Alpinisms" On the night of Ghostly 10 Year Anniversary here in LA, two albums I've been very excited about from 2008 are Deastro and School of Seven Bells . They are not playing, AFAIK, but I debating whether I should pop over. Both bands seem to be a response to my lament "There will never be songs like this, again" when talking about New Order. The irony is that I wrote that post [...]

Forgive me for I am late — so so late — but here is my top 10 albums of 2008! I really struggled with this list because I felt very confident with my top 10, but the order I rearranged over and over, struggling with what I loved in CD-R form, what I loved earlier in the year, and what I love now. Some choices were released in 2007, which surprised me and I will start a new series: Hey You! Last Year. Even though I keep this list within 2008, one selection (Bon Iver) was "technically" released in [...]

I'm not gonna say it: just play it! I need to break up some of this text with something I'm excited about. What I like about this video is that the electronics are front and center and everything else is sugar for the eyes (Animal Collective even put themselves into that 2-dimensional space) Makes me think, Science Fiction. Double Feature. Posted in Domino, Indie, Labels, Music, New Releases, Videos
Unlike my Top 12 Bands 2007 , this year is a throwback to all good things '80s and '90s (kinda-sorta). Because I like to blame Tim Peysar for my musical deviations, I will continue to do so for he led me, kicking and screaming, against my will, against my better intentions, against the will of my wallet, to buy all the Cure deluxe re-issues. As I'd like to give him that full credit - I'll also give him The Radio Dept. - I continued to buy re-issues of The Smiths (73 Singles: hawt!), and a [...]
Continuing in the info-porn that is my stats-madness of play-counts of last year's 2007 Top Tracks , here is my top 10 songs of the past year according to last.fm . What I like about this list is that the songs don't need to stay within the confines of the year, I just needed to have listened to them on a device that scobbled them in the past 12 months. 01. A Song for Ellie Greenwich by Parenthetical Girls Clearly one of the stars of Entanglements, the [...]
So I've consolidated my iTunes onto one computer this year , but as it is with the nature of music, my listening mode has changed. I've begun digging into the past for history and inspiration, and expanded on favorites with re-issues and deluxe editions from the 60s through the 90s. Despite that, most of my top tracks over the year remained in 2008 territory. 3 tracks that weren't came from 2007. Compare with my top 10 albums of 2008 and, for many, this is not a surprise! Since I pretty consistently blog these end of year lists [...]
I've uploaded my picture collection of the bands I saw at Coachella this year. They include, in reverse order, Love & Rockets, Stars, Shout Out Louds, Annuals, Prince, Portishead, Animal Collective, St. Vincent, Bonde do Role, Fat Boy Slim, Datarock, and Dan Deacon. The Prince and Portishead pictures were far away on the Jumbotron, but the [...]
I've renewed my Flickr account and am starting to upload my Coachella pics and videos and I've started from the beginning: with Dan Deacon. What was so amazing was that about halfway through the video - on the chorus - everyone started singing right along with Dan Deacon making it a very communal and [...]
My co-worker, Winnie, picked up this amazing Black Moth Super Rainbow teeshirt for me and I either get alot of love ("YEAH! BMRC!" at Coachella for instance) or confused stares. And then they ask and I explain they are a music band. With a seemingly knowing nod they say, "What do they sound [...]
In anticipation of their new Entanglements LP (to be released on Tomlab), one of my many favorite Portland-based bands, Parenthetical Girls, (pre-)released its first song on a David Horvitz 73 picture disk from Aagoo Records. Seriously, best OMD cover since Genetic Engineering by Eggs: Joan of Arc (Maid of Orleans) I'm happy to see Zac Pennington play with [...]
After the crazy year in review wrap-up posts, I tend to drop off the face of the blog. Since then I've seen a few shows (Born Ruffians, Bon Iver), gone to a music festival in the Coachella desert, and have continued to find and listen to great music. Despite my Last.fm stats, one band in [...]
