Portland-based KV faves Menomena make a one-stop return to the UK on May 13th to play the Garage. As ever, it promises to be a wonderful show. The news also gives me the opportunity to post the video for Plumage once more:
I can't remember the last time a song so vividly transported me to a landscape. It's hot place, a dry heat that evaporates the moisture from your eyes. The sun is bright - the kind of bright that takes the certainty out of all but the boldest colours. There's dust, bare earth, very little grows. Walking on, past weird cacti and over a ridge, I find caravans, proper caravans, wagons drawn by horses, parked around a circle of tents. The sun starts to set, candles are lit, and people move about. A light breeze carries a rich smell of cooking, [...]
![[Live review] Yo La Tengo @ Barbican, London, 20/03/13](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4859162_lg.jpg)
Image courtesy of Jeffrey James There a few greater privileges in a music fan’s life than getting to review one of their favourite ever bands. That does however mean objectivity is a little more tricky, and by gosh do I love Yo La Tengo . Truthfully, I haven’t been as big a fan of their last few records as I am of their latest, Fade which has pretty much been on repeat on my stereo since it came out. It’s official: I’ve fallen for them all over again, so I’m already excited [...]
![[Interview] Woodpigeon](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4859163_lg.jpg)
Woodpigeon, live at the End of the Road 2010 by Matt Law At the end of his UK solo tour supporting Mark Eitzel ( reviewed here ) this month, Mark Andrew Hamilton, AKA Woodpigeon , graciously submitted to KV's e-mail inquisition. Hi Mark, many thanks for taking the time to answer these. First off – at the end now of a UK tour – how are you? Pretty worn out, to be honest, but that’s typical. For now I’d really just like to ride my bicycle along [...]
![[Live Review] Mark Eitzel & Woodpigeon, The Fleece, Bristol](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4821923_lg.jpg)
Woodpigeon at the Fleece The last time KV caught Woodpigeon , after the cancellation of last year's Junip support slot, was at the End of the Road festival way back in 2010, where he was in full band mode, backed up by Eagleowl. Tonight, Woodpigeon the man (born Mark Andrew Hamilton), adorned in a chunky sweater - perhaps a souvenir of a recent spell in Iceland - is playing alone. Given the softness of his voice, comparisons to Elliott Smith are easy, but they seem appropriate, there's a similar sadness lurking behind his upbeat melodies. [...]
![[Live Review] Wet Nuns, The Croft, Bristol – 3rd March 2013](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4821608_lg.jpg)
(Eds note - this review by Geoffery Crescent ) Wet Nuns, as drawn by Owen Watts Seal Club kicked the night off with a blend of fuzzy riffs and noise rock style tunes that didn’t quite gel, but brimmed with potential. Lead singer Jack Lawrence would have been wiser to sing within his vocal range; his high notes were often unpleasantly raw and strained. The guitar too sounded best on their simpler songs; the multi-layering [...]

STRFKR's third album, ' Miracle Maker ' comes out on April 1st in the UK via Polyvinyl. Give them some love on facebook

Jonnie Common, by Olga Tyukova Out this week on Red Deer Club records is the new single from Jonnie Common, formerly of Glasgow's Down the Tiny Steps. Admirably, Figurehead comes in two versions, an upbeat 'Wet' version, all loping bass, big drums and glitchy drums, and a 'Dry' version, more sparse sounding with flourished of acoustic guitar and the sound of the sea. There are also remixes by FOUND and grnr. Lyrically, it's an intelligent piece, perhaps a reflection on past naivete and losing friends leaving a band. The new long player drops later this year, [...]

Angel Olsen - Tiniest Seed (Official Video) from Randy Sterling Hunter on Vimeo . I've become quite a fan of Angel Olsen's voice, mostly from having heard her on the excellent Quail and Dumplings by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, and her own material is excellent. She's making a rare trip to these shores (well, mostly Ireland) this year - recommended I'd say.. The dates are Thurs. May 2. Dublin (IE), The Joinery ( tickets ) Fri. May 3. Cork (IE), Half Moon Theatre ( tickets ) [...]
It seems more than a little incongruous to write about festivals, when I’m tapping away shrouded in a blanket and with a hot water bottle in an attempt to thaw out on a bitterly cold night. However, festival season will be upon us soon enough and today I bring you announcements about Liverpool Sound City and The Jodrell Bank sessions in Manchester and The Eden Sessions in Cornwall. The biggest news is that Sigur Rós will be headlining at Jodrell Bank in Manchester and Eden Sessions Following their March tour in support of Valtari, the band [...]
