My Chemical Romance have announced that their third studio album, out in October, will be a concept album titled 'The Black Parade'. It will follow the journey of a young man called "The Patient" from his death into the hereafter. It is reputed to owe quite a lot to Queen, and features guest vocals by Liza Minnelli (??) The lead single is 'Welcome to the Black Parade', and has 'leaked' apparently. Not that we'd know about such things. If we did know where to get hold of leaked songs and had listened to this track, we might make [...]

I disappeared on various travels last week without ever writing a Record of the Week review, which I'm particularly sorry about because this is a wonderful wonderful record. It's the second installment in the limited edition Brainlove Records 73 Club , a split 73 starring Tim Ten Yen and Shimura Curves . First track is by Tim Ten Yen (described by no less than Steve Lamacq as a "future cult figure"), and is called 'When The Song Applies To You' . It is [...]
John Otway: legend. Well, he is if you're lucky enough to come from the sleepy market town of Aylesbury, birthplace of the man himself. He's returned, band in tow, to headline 'Hobble On The Cobbles', a free music festival in the picturesque (!) surroundings of Aylesbury Market Square (Judge John Deed is filmed there, donchaknow). After a lengthy introduction, a chanting crowd and what seems like the longest band set-up ever, Otway emerges on stage and launches straight into The Hit. For those not in the know, The Hit (aka Cor Baby That's Really Free) reached the dizzying [...]

We've almost recovered enough from xx speed trials xx on Tuesday to to resume normal service. Almost. We had a grand old time, and consumed roughly our own body masses in rum. Big thanks to The Mescalitas, the m j laws, Rory Nunn, Chain of Fools, Patrick Plunkett and visual-hybrid. Don't forget you can still hear the podcast. Click 'get the podcast' on the right.
This week we award the honour to The Rapture. Taken from forthcoming album `Pieces Of The People We Love`, `Get Myself Into It` is certain to fill festival tents and dancefloors this summer. On initial listen, it seems to lack some of the immediacy and fervour of previous efforts. However, it does have many ingredients of a summer hit. They continue to make fine use of the cowbell. The bassist is still in possesion of the funk (there were rumours that he had gotten careless with it whilst out on tour with The Cure). Luckily, he got it back and all is well. Heck! even [...]
As though Gorillaz, Blur and solo efforts weren't enough, you may have heard that our man has a new band called The Good, The Bad and The Queen with Tony Allen of Fela Kuti, Simon Tong of The Verve, and Paul Simonon of The Clash. Happily, they've announced that they're playing a show: " The BBC have announced their Electric Proms season at London's Roundhouse. The line-up includes The Good, The Bad and The Queen who will make their live debut at the Roundhouse in Camden on 26th October. Tickets go onsale [...]

Crikey! The second installment of Kid Vinyl's (ahem) monthly podcast is online, and this time the sound quality is a-ok! But what's on it I hear you say. Well, to celebrate our live show xx speed trials xx next Tuesday, I (possibly the least charismatic DJ ever) spin some tunes from some of the acts who are playing The tracklisting is 1) Rory Nunn - Future Fading 2) Chain of Fools - Dead September 3) Patrick Plunkett - Dangerous Roads 4) m j law - The California Light [...]
It's a "slow news week", so let's have a peep at what other Kid Vinyl "staff members" are sending e-mails about. Firstly, this from our new signing Ads P, who'll be making his debut as a podcaster nest month: >Hey guys >Just to invite everyone to my debut as a director. >It's theatre, it's called 'Tequila Mocking Birds'. >Where, when and how much? >20th aug - Hen & Chicken's - Highbury & islington tube - 7.30 pm >21st aug - The Bedford - Balham tube - 7.30pm [...]

It was my housemate Paul who pointed me in the direction of Electric Cinema's myspace some time ago and my initial reaction was one of Well, do they actually listen to anything other than The Flaming Lips? Oddly tho, despite my bitter granddad-in-a-home cynicism, I did find myself humming and purring away to Brand New Blues for a few days at work. So it was with a degree of grudging excitement that I invested a tenner (!?) in seeing them play it up at The Camden Barfly Being at the end of a New bands night [...]
For those of you who miss the heady days of jangly indie pop crafted by such heroes as David Gedge, new single 'This Awakening' by Costar could be the very fix you need. The production lends the song a sound that could so easily be from 1994, even more so when the guitar solo kicks in, and yet that is in no way a bad thing. In fact the song doesn't sound particularly dated, it's just that there aren't many people putting out such compelling tunes as this right now, which [...]

An ominous bit of news as we reach the venue â€" the headlining band turned up to soundcheck, took one look at the place and ran for the hills. Or something like that. So the Brian Jacket Letdown are bumped up a place in the bill and become the new stars of the show. The venue itself has a definite 60s vibe about it: walls that I think are best viewed in the low lighting of the room, or through sunglasses. Or both if you’re the singer in the first band; how she managed to navigate across the room without [...]
We here at the KV believe record covers are a very important part of the artistic process, which is another reason why we'd rather buy CDs than download entire albums. And this particular record sleeve really caught my eye. Admit it, you're impressed
