Seminal LA indie rock band The Jealous Sound just released "A Gentle Reminder" their first album in nine years and the long-awaited follow-up to The Jealous Sound's debut LP "Kill Them with Kindness," which was named one of Spin's best albums of 2003 (and one of my favorites that year as well). If you're in the mood for a great documentary about some loud metal, head over to Strange Matter on Thursday, Feb. 9 for a screening of "Slow Southern Steel," a film about heavy music in the modern American South, as told by the very people who have created this music during the last two decades. Shot in back alleys, parking lots, and the seedy green rooms of the dirtiest clubs that the Bible Belt failed to snuff out, these diehard musicians discuss their love of music and the south, as well as the difficulties, contradictions, [...]

Native Richmonders turned North Carolinians Skylar Gudasz and the Ugly Girls return to the city to play at Ashland Coffee and Tea on Feb. 9 in support of their debut release, "Two Headed Monster." It's a nice collection of somber yet upbeat folk tunes that definitely worth checking out.

Congrats go out to Reggie Pace for putting on an excellent show with Bon Iver on this weekend's Saturday Night Live.

Whether you love dubstep and wish it would just go away, you have to admit to liking some of it here or there. That's my case with England's Rusko , who performs tonight at the National. I'm really NOT a fan of dubstep (like at all) but for some reason, I'm really enjoying this song (minus the f-word every 2 seconds). I'm sure he'll play it tonight. Rusko - Cockney Thug

From disparate upbringings, ranging from the occult, Evangelical Christian conservatives and Native American-worshipping hippies, the members of Heavy Midgets were all born out of the strip mall culture of Northern Virginia. Each eventually made their escape to the former capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia. Through their infamous live performances and song lyrics, Heavy Midgets channels their frustration and alienation from modern American society. The members of Heavy Midgets, each accomplished songwriters in their own right, form like Voltron and kick ass like Voltron. Heavy Midgets play at the Camel [...]

In random news today, the Hat Factory will be changing its name to Epic Theatre . According to HF's Facebook page, the change of name is to "reflect the dynamic changes that have taken place over the last few months." As I've vented about before , I've given up all hope on this venue actually hosting good live music. The only things they have scheduled is some punk band in February, Lucero in April (this actually looks good), a Cornhole Tournament and a bunch of dance party nights. It seems Hat Factory (excuse, me "Epic") [...]
