It doesn't matter if you have only 1 reader or 1,000, if you have a blog you will be hit with hundreds of emails from bands looking for some love. Some times they can be a little too pushy, mass marketing their free albums and most of the time the results are sloppy and not really up my alley. But every once and awhile some catch my ear. So, I'm going to share with you three artists that in my opinion, have talent and a future. The first two are singer / song [...]
I was introduced to this Boston duo back when I first decided to give in to the Myspace world. I searched all Boston based hip hop groups and they were the first to catch my ear with their infectious track "Word Association". Actually, they helped me win two tickets to go see The National and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah on new years at Irving Plaza (thanks again Ear Farm ). But I have yet to see them play live. They were working on an album around the time I started listening [...]
I've talked up JB Darkels new album due out September 18th. However, I'm not sure what to make of this video. I like the song and it's the first song he's released since announcing this solo album. I guess the main character in this video seems to be falling a lot and this song has a free feel to it or gliding feel so I guess there's a connection. But everything else, well, take a look and let me know what you think. Pre-order the album from Insound .
It's not all that often that I right about a Boston based band. Which is a shame because I'm sure there are a ton out there that I would like. However, I was introduced to this next group while attending a show from one of my favorite new artists or 2006, Hot Chip . They were the openers and I always try to get myself to a show early to catch the opening act. And I am very thankful I showed up early for this gig. Big Digits [...]
If you missed the show, see the previous post to download a couple songs, visit their myspace page and view a short clip from one of their liver performances. Upcoming posts: Introdcution to Boston's very own electronic duo dance phenom's - BIG DIGITS - and their CD release party (see Boston Concert Calendar in the sidebar) 7L & Esoteric show Return of Beirut As for my experience with Gil Mantera's Party Dream...What do they say, pictures are worth a [...]
What can you really expect from two brothers from Youngstown, OH that call themselves the "Party Dream" . I've heard nothing but wild stories about their live show and I'm truly psyched to see them tomorrow night at PA's Lounge . I've been listening to their album off and on, BloodSongs (buy it here for 10 bucks) , and it's quite impressive for a duo of this style. Not too many electro dance duo's can pull off a listenable album. It's usually all about the live show that hooks people [...]
So one of the first Myspace.com Secret Shows here in Boston just happens to be none other than M-E-T-H-O-D MAN . Performing at Axis tomorrow night and starting at 10:45 pm. I will be at the Sox game but really, these secret shows are no secret at all so your chances of getting in are slim. However, if you live or work in Cambridge and you are there right now, get yourself to Tower Records in Harvard Square and grab a wrist band. They are handing out a selected number of wrist bands [...]
Just a quick recap of yesterday's free show here in Boston. As you probably figured out, I went to see TV on the Radio , not really to see Yeah Yeah Yeah's or really Karen O & Company. So I won't say much about YYY's other than Karen truly is a freak and puts on an entertaining escapade, unfortunately, it didn't grab my attention for longer then two songs. However, TVOTR captured my attention from the moment they set foot on stage, which wasn't easy to do with about 200 high [...]
I have to first give a props to Exit Fare for being the one to provide the heads up on this free show tomorrow in City Hall Plaza. Tomorrow starting at 6 pm the Yeah Yeah Yeah's and freakin TV on the Radio will be playing a free show in Government Center. I don't care where you work, get out early or if you work downtown, there is no excuse for missing this gig. YYY's are headlining so make sure you get their early to catch Kyp and company at 6. [...]
Slint, Zwan, Will Oldahm, Papa M, Tortoise, StereolabÂ… What do all these random artists / bands / names have in common - they all have David Christian PajoÂ's fingerprint on them. To be released on August 22 through Drag City Records (big plus already), David PajoÂ's next project is under his new solo name (or really we should say his actual name), Pajo. The album will be called 1968 and the only connection I can make with 1968 is that his music does portray some sense of the 60Â's – a bit rebellious, lyrics that seem [...]
Josh Ritter is playing a free show at Copley Square tomorrow. Show begins at 5:30 pm but there is a supporting act, The Damnwells . Josh Ritter - "Monster Ballads" Buy the new album, Animal Years, here Stream the whole album, here
I'm sorry, but this is too funny not to post about. When Samuel L. Jackson decides to take a role solely based on the name being "Snakes on a Plane" and then decides to throw in a line in the movie because of some parody developed on YouTube back in September of 2005 - well, there's not much more I have to say. To hear the infamous line, listen or download the track below. But first, watch the trailer. [...]
Jeez, that was a brain buster. Ok, we should be back to normal. Unless you're using some really unkown web browser, you shouldn't see any sidebar images leaking over to the comments area or anything like that. The next step for hip to be square, get some creativity going on here. This is one boring blog design. I apologize until further notice. I need some images. Soon I will have a brand new digital camera and we can begin to get crazy. In the meantime, keep [...]
Sorry for all the problems with the styles here. Didn't realize how much of hassle it can be to make Firefox and Internet Explorer look the same when writing html code. But during my edits and deleting I've managed to really mess things up with my sidebar. I'll hopefull have it all fixed up, otherwise, I may be backtracking a bit (former hip to be square site) while I explore other website design options.
Went down to Philadelphia this past weekend to catch up with some old friends and to go see myself some music. For those of you that don't know, CSS and Bonde Do Role are both from Brazil. They are both rooted in the Balle Funk movement going on down there. Pretty crazy stuff. I'm sure that if I was in the appropriate environment and came upon a bunch of people getting down and dirty to some crazy Portuguese rapping and beat nasty sounds that I would enjoy myself. The fact of [...]
