Hans-Peter Lindstrøm has probably remixed a band you really like. Best Coast, Roxy Music, LCD Soundsystem, Bear In Heaven, Franz Ferdinand, Doves, and Glasser are among his victims. But other than 123 b-sides and Deluxe Edition bonus tracks, not too many Americans are familiar with Lindstrøm's work. Truth is, they are missing out. Lindstrøm released his second full length album, Six Cups of Rebel , this past Tuesday. It's the follow up to 20082s Where You Go I Go Too . His first album was comprised of three very long [...]

Responsible for showing the world The Globes , Brite Futures , The Lonely Forest , and many other KEXP favorites, EMP's Sound Off! competition is a must know – especially if you live in the PNW. Now in its eleventh year, Sound Off! is an underage "battle of the bands" of sorts. Selecting some of the most promising music from the 21 and younger crowd from the PNW, 12 bands are judged on a set of live music at Seattle's EMP. The 12 bands are split into three semi-final rounds where they compete for the [...]

photos by Dave Lichterman East Coast "chill wave" heroes Washed Out stopped by KEXP in October to play a fantastic in-studio to coincide with their show at the Neptune Theatre. Washed Out had a fantastic 2011, releasing the universally acclaimed LP Within and Without and expanding Ernest Greene's laptop project to a full band setting. Greene isn't letting the chill wave tag pigeonhole him by any means. With a full band, Washed Out sounds richer than ever in a live setting and does more justice to the emotional capacity of Greene's songs. [...]

photo by Jim Bennett by Jonathan Hamilton I remember when I was barely a teenager I thought that a mosh pit happened at every concert and that proper concert etiquette required anyone at the front of the stage to participate in said pit. Eventually, I went to enough shows to learn that moshing is only appropriate for certain types of music and certain types of crowds. The all ages crowd at the Neptune for last weekend's Los Campesinos! show never learned these valuable mosh pit lessons, [...]

As major labels continue to exist behind the times, artists and labels with little capital and lesser reputations are producing some of the most innovative, interesting, and inspiring music. Whether it's creating a new niche in digital technology or looking to once obsolete formats, Agitated Atmosphere hopes to pull back the curtain on a wealth of sights and sound from luminaries such as Decimus . Private pressing are a marvelous occurrence; a brave endeavor that allows a musician to test their boundaries through a limited amount of media. So few are able to hear the [...]
It's the Valentine's Day edition of Friday on My Mind . The weekly collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. This Valentines Day give the person you love the gift of music. 1980's music, because nothing says I love you more than the gift of synthesizers, angular hair, brightly colored pants, tucked in shirts, and of coarse xylophones. Do you realize how many 80's bands had xylophones? Oh and white shoes. And the music videos seemed to have very little, if any, structure other than a small budget for a hair stylist and zero attention to [...]

If you haven't heard of the party-rocking mashup art-form known as Girl Talk , your life is about to change forever. Once a biomedical engineer, Philadelphia native Greg Gillis decided one day that he wanted to take songs and bash them together until they stuck. For over ten years, Gillis has been releasing music under the Girl Talk monicker. In 2006, with his release Night Ripper , Gillis moved away from the glitch-mash sound that he had been working with to try and create full-album sets of mashups that people could dance to. Taking top 40 hits from [...]

The Buck Pets , like so many "alternative" rock bands of the late '80s and early '90s, coulda been huge. The Dallas band had a major label behind them from the release of their debut album (this one), a rabid fanbase (there are still many people waxing nostalgic for this band 20 years after their demise), and even snooty college radio DJs loved their loud, dirty brand of rock - major label or no. They seem to have been the victims of bad timing, though; when their label was bought by Polygram, it appears they fell through the cracks of [...]

The Head and the Heart at Mellow Johnny's during SXSW 2011 photo by Jim Bennett The Head and the Heart have a new music video out for "Down in the Valley". The video features footage of the band on the road and playing at different venues. It's a quite endearing video to a beautiful song. Watch it below: Third Man Records founder and former White Stripes' guitarist Jack White recently announced the release of [...]

The Kopecky Family Band : six members, five guys one girl, only one actual Kopecky, but all around a tight-knit family of musical talent. Four years ago, Kelsey Kopecky and Gabe Simon teamed up mostly on a lark but soon developed their friendship into a harmonious orchestral folk outfit by adding more friends: Corey Oxendine, Markus Midkiff, Steven Holmes and David Krohn. Last September, the Kopeckys took some time out of touring, playing festivals and generally building their fanbase to perform live the KEXP studio. It's hard to peg down what makes this Kentucky band so special, but if [...]

Sigur Rós has emerged from hibernation and will play their first show since 2008 at Bestival on the Isle of Wight in the UK. They've announced that there will be more tour dates via their web site. Besides appearing at Sasquatch this year, Explosions in the Sky have announced other US tour dates. Check them out here. Veteran fuzz-rockers The Jesus and Mary Chain announced a [...]

Underground electronica act Mux Mool released his second proper LP Planet High School today on Ghostly International. You may know him from his classic 2008 single "Death 90003 or from his killer remix of "Windstorm" by label-mates School of Seven Bells. But for the last year and a half or so, Mux Mool has been doing what underground electronic artists do best: release a string of EPs and singles and keep honing your sound in to perfection. Mux Mool is at a different place on Planet High School that he was on [...]
Eleanor Friedberger is playing at the Crocodile Thursday night, February 9. If you haven't heard "My Mistakes", the lead single off of her debut solo LP Last Summer , listen to it above, and I'll probably see you on Thursday. You may know the Friedberger name from The Fiery Furnaces , Eleanor's band with her brother Matt. The Fiery Furnaces have received plenty of critical acclaim over their history, but in the last two years, the Furnaces are taking a break so that Matt and Eleanor can work on some solo material. Last Summer [...]

photo by Dave Lichterman DFA dance-punk legends YACHT are playing a show this Wednesday, February 8, at the Crocodile. But if you go, be careful - you might join a cult. The band has been freaking us out for years now. Their newest album Shangri-La was a 10 track trial by fire through the wacky YACHT philosophy (if you are interested, they wrote a book on it). Their songs are so catchy and fun that oftentimes, you might disregard the lyrics, but know that YACHT is as deep [...]

Mark Lanegan's Blues Funeral comes out today, and if you couldn't tell how excited we were to feature an exclusive album preview this past week and you somehow thrilled we were to host the Mark Lanegan Band live this morning from the Cutting Room Studios in NYC, go back and listen to the performance again later today on our Live Performances Archive and you can practically hear John Richards' head explode when Mark calls him "bro." Awesome. Though Mark Lanegan lives in sunnier southern climes now, he's definitely a legend of Northwest [...]
There may not be as much dancing as the "Lonely Boy" video, but the new Black Keys video for "Gold on the Ceiling" is still pretty cool. You can find "Gold on the Ceiling" on 20112s acclaimed El Camino and you can see the Black Keys live in Seattle on May 8th at Key Arena. Here's a name we haven't heard in a while. Daft Punk is reported to be working with famed disco and R&B producer Nile Rodgers on a new album! The band [...]
