These United States:

The Important Thing
Remember sitting on the couch in the early '90s, beer (or in my case, juice box) in hand as you watched Weezer 's "Say It Ain't So" video on MTV's 120 Minutes ? These United States remember, too, and even though the band formed in 2006, its members are really, really sad they never got anything in rotation on Alternative Nation . So they put on some flannel, shot a "long lost home video" in a garage, inverted the colors in random scenes (à la Bleach ), and set it to their [...]

Wetdog:

Female-trio Wetdog join the ranks of Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls carrying on a tradition that began with bands like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney in the '90s. Whether the U.K. ladies would appreciate the Riot Grrrl tag is unknown, but they recently toured with The Slits so we're in the right ballpark. Certainly they share a similar esthetic: buzz-saw guitars, surf bass-lines, and shouty vocals reminiscent of Thowing Muses' Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly give Wetdog the same underground feminist punk vibe. On the video for "Lower [...]

jj, The xx, Tour Dates:

The xx + jj = whoa. This is not an algebra problem, though it may solve the puzzle of who jj is. The mysterious Swedish group, who have never revealed their identities, are making their U.S. debut this fall with another electronic band of the moment, the xx. Will they play behind a curtain? A U.K.-based electro group, the xx are making many Best of 2009 lists with their self-titled debut, and are touring with Friendly Fires this year and Hot Chip next April. The [...]

Fever Ray:

Fever Ray's new video for "Keep the Streets Empty for Me" isn't as readily horrifying as her other videos have been, but it's still very much a Fever Ray video. Much like it's track, the clip is austere, mysterious, and vaguely unsettling as it follows two girls across some macabre urban nightscape; and still, these ladies should be lucky that they found themselves caught in the least of Fever Ray's nightmares. [ Discobelle ]

Jennifer Lopez:

Jennifer Lopez has been hitless for a while now, and that's obviously something she's looking to remedy on her upcoming album, Love?. "Louboutins" is a bouncy number that uses the famous heels as a metaphor for female empowerment (oh JLo, you queen of irony), with the assistance of The-Dream and Tricky Stewart as producers. It doesn't really scream radio killer (except JLO sings The-Dream's trademark "Radiokilla" at the beginning), but who knows. Download : Jennifer Lopez – Louboutins (Produced by [...]

Mum:

They don't really have anything in common aesthetically or musically, but I feel like Mum is really spiritually akin to ABBA. Witnessing and listening to the outfit's carefree, sunny ways as they busk "If I Were a Fish" and "The Smell of Today Is Sweet Like Breastmilk in the Wind" on the streets of Paris, I feel like Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, and Anni-Frid would really dig the style of their fellow Scandinavians. Just listen to all of those la's! [ La Blogotheque ]

Curren$y:

According to his Twitter, Curren$y linked up with Mos Def last night to make this quick little number, "Breakfast." Although it is poorly mixed, Mos still brought some smooth and jazzy production to the table. And Curren$y, who many know for his guest verses on several Lil' Wayne mixtapes, flows over the horns-laden beat with ease. Perhaps this is just a teaser of what's to come from Mos and Curren$y in the future, as they plan on releasing music with Jay Electronica as the trio Center Edge Territory. And maybe this whole recording on the fly concept will [...]

Ian Svenonius, Jon Spencer:

When two legendary frontmen get together for a discussion, the result is often a must-watch clip for rock disciples. In this case, Jon Spencer (he of Blues Explosion , Boss Hog , Heavy Trash , and Pussy Galore), and Ian Svenonius (of Nation of Ulysses, the Make Up, and Chain & the Gang) got together at Kutsher's Country Club in upstate New York at this year's All Tomorrows Parties festival. Svenonius' unique demeanor and interview style are matched against Spencer's encyclopedic knowledge of classic blues and rock 'n' roll. Among the topics they discuss: Ike [...]

Pixies, The Pixies:

The Pixies are nearing the tail end of a tour playing their classic Doolittle LP live and are celebrating by performing "Debaser" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon next Tuesday, November 24. Additionally, the group will play a second song exclusively to stream on the Late Night website . This song will be chosen via Twitter - and you can vote by tweeting directly @jimmyfallon until 6 PM E.S.T. on Monday. Last of the Doolittle tour dates below: 11.20 Chicago, IL: Aragon Ballroom [...]

The Big Pink:

Just when you thought you'd had enough of indie bands covering Beyonce, UK up-and-comers the Big Pink come along with this cover of "Sweet Dreams" to confirm that you've had enough of indie bands covering Beyonce. To be fair to Big Pink, this cover doesn't seem like some offensive ironic crap; the band's far too melodramatic for that kind of thing. The problem with this cover is that it's too faithful to the original, without maintaining any of Beyonce's sass. This should go without saying, but if bands want to do Beyonce, they need to do it big. [ Stereogum [...]

Black Eyed Peas, Freeland:

The Black Eyed Peas have reached an out-of-court cash settlement with electronic producer Adam Freeland, whose " Mancry" was used without permission to make "Party All the Time ." Will.i.am admitted the unfair jacking, and said a settlement would be coming, so this is that. The details of the settlement were not revelead, but Freeland announced via his Twitter that he'll buy anyone who recognizes him a beer if they say "Party All the Time." There are rumors of other out-of-court illegal sample settlements regarding The E.N.D. coming soon. [ Daily Swarm ]

Obits:

Given that half of the band cut their teeth in '90s rock bands Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu and Edsel, of course Obits would straight crush when they get in front of a late night audience, like they did last night on Fallon. They performed "Fake Kinkade" and it feels like stepping through a portal into 1995. These dudes can rawk. Obits' I Blame You is out now via Sub Pop.

The Antlers:

The Antlers' first trip to My Old Kentucky Blog's Laundromatinee was full of loyal takes on their excellent Hospice . This time out, the fellas cut an acoustic session for the blog at this year's Monolith Festival at Red Rocks. Above is video of "Shiva" and below is "Atrophy." These songs are powerful in any format. [My Old Kentucky Blog ]

Wyclef Jean:

Wyclef is at his best when he's sermonizing like a preacher, and he's in fine form on the anti-violence "Walk Away," a song that compares the bullets that killed MLK Jr., Gandhi and JFK to the bullets that killed Big and Pac. The video is appropriately gritty, as Clef raps in a junkyard, presumably after hours and without permission, because dude is gully. Wyclef's From the Hut to the Projects to the Mansion is out now.

Gucci Mane:

Even though Gucci Mane is locked up and won't be able to promote it, his label is still releasing The State vs. Radric Davis on Dec. 8. As further proof the thing actually is forthcoming, here's the track list, which features known tracks like "Lemonade," "Spotlight" and "Wasted." "Kush is My Cologne" certainly sounds promising. 01. "Classical" (Intro) 02. "Interlude: Toilet Bowl Shawty/ Mike Epps" 03. "Heavy" 04. "Stupid Wild," featuring Lil Wayne, Cam'ron 05. "All About the Money," featuring Rick Ross 06. "Lemonade" 07. "Bingo," [...]

Brian Jonestown Massacre:

The legendarily dysfunctional, and the dysfunctionally legendary Brian Jonestown Massacre are streaming the entirety of their new album, Who Killed Sgt. Pepper on YouTube via bizarre videos. As for the album, it sounds like the turgid drone of My Bloody Underground is back in full force. Go here to listen.

Motley Crue:

Hair metal fans are all :( this week because Motley Crue released their fifth album of greatest hits, yet another comp that collects most of Shout at the Devil with whatever other garbage was on the band's most recent album. Apparently these fans are surprised that Motley Crue, a non-capitalist enterprise and a long-running bastion of giving fans a fair shake, would like their fans to pony up more money for old songs they already know. I guess the best part of this whole thing is that Motley Crue have released five greatest hits albums since 1991, which [...]

Iggy and the Stooges, Mudhoney, Sleep:

The recently reformed Raw Power- era Stooges have been confirmed as the headliners for next year's Don't Look Back night at ATP NY, preparing to play Raw Power cover-to-cover on Sept. 3, 2010 at Kutshers Country Club. Along with the Stooges, Sleep and Mudhoney have also been confirmed as performers, with the former performing Holy Mountain and the latter performing Superfuzz Bigmuff. [ Pitchfork ]

Micachu & The Shapes:

Micachu and the Shapes are the latest hot indie band to end up soundtracking a Crayola commercial, as their "Golden Phone" has been turned into music kids can melt crayons to. It seems crazy to me, since I am 64, that normal crayons stopped being enough for kids, and they need to be involved in the crayon making process. These kids have no idea how hard we had it back in the '40s; only eight colors, and we liked what he had. We never even dreamed of melting crayons, because of the Great War, and all. [ Stereogum ]

Califone:

Califone's recently released All My Friends are Funeral Singers is a companion piece to a film that lead singer Tim Rutili wrote and directed. "Funeral Singers" is something of the album's title track, and this new music video isn't part of the film, it's a new thing that features the band in an old house, grinding out the track. In short, these Chicagoans stay mad busy. Somehow, a simple performance video nearly out-haunts the song. [ Pitchfork ]
